if you want to start all

if you want to start all over and erase all data, then you can turn it on while pressing on of four corners down at the same time. Which corner is different between models. I can't remember which one it is for the 200.

Hard reset 250W

1.- Power off the GPS
2.- Press and hold the reset button
3.- connect the Nüvi to an EXTERNAL power source

From the user manual

For the soft reset holf the lower - right corner while power on, wait still pressing the lower - right corner till the message appear.

This brings me to a good point

Ok, I believe that there are different opinions as to what a hard reset vs a soft reset is. IMO, a hard reset is when you use the reset which, however, I have been saying that a hard reset is the whole corner screen + power on (because that is what most ppl think a hard reset is).

What do other think?

Hard reset

You usualy do a hard reset when the unit dosn't respond to any command, no way to do corner-power on action, I think ..... rolleyes

Resets - hard vs Soft

On a computer a soft reset is the 3-finger salute & restart....a hard reset is the reset button on the front of the box....or, the power button...on a cell phone, a soft reset is powering off, then on again...and a hard reset is removing the battery, inserting it and turning it on again.

Ok, so what is PowerOn+corner of screen concerned as? IYO?

BTW, I agree with the above...no not what I said, what you said.

To compare to computers, it's like hitting F8 (or whatever...) during the boot to get to the BIOS settings.

F8, I like it!!!!! But that still doesn't answer my question.

Well, although I disagree, I

Well, although I disagree, I think that power on+ corner of screen = soft reset, it is the opinion of most here that it is a hard reset, therefore, I continue to call it a hard reset.

Hard vs Soft -

A hard reset will wipe out all user information and start all over with factory settings.

A soft reset will keep the user information, etc. and over ride any lock-up that has taken place because the processing unit has stopped working or experienced a problem of one kind or another that will be corrected once it is reset (soft). (Ran out of breath on that last sentence)

I can live with that

I can live with that explanation!

For the 200, hold the bottom right corner

For the 200, hold the bottom right corner while turning it on for a soft reset.

Resets

Soft Reset - telling the software or operating system to reset.

Hard Reset - forcing the hardware to reset, reset button on computer, remove battery on cell phones, throwing out the window from the fifth story (vista).

I have done the "Press lower

I have done the "Press lower right corner of screen and turn on" it erases all info like favorites, but my password is needed. this is in my opinion a soft reset.

I have tried
1.- Power off the GPS
2.- Press and hold the reset button
3.- connect the Nüvi to an EXTERNAL power source

but nothing happened, but I will try again.

Password is retained

All of your personal data and favorites will be cleared with the "hard reset" method, i.e. lower right corner, but the Password will remain. This is by design, otherwise it would be easy for someone to steal the unit and override the password protection.

Brand new... 2 days old. Web site is of no help. Any ideas??? Would like to ctrl+alt+delete, but no can do.... plus power switch on top does nothing.

Will be glad to do any kind of reset that will allow me to use the GPS.

Thanks John

frozen screen

power off...push power button to left and hold for 10 seconds.

reset?

How do you do a SOFT RESET vs hard reset?

does either one erase your CUSTOM POI, bluetooth paring, and the other POI things I have installed (FODORS, favorites.....I dont want to erase anything....

Also I am told doing this MIGHT fix the slow refresh/redraw?

Just save off your favorites

Just save off your favorites first, maybe to a new custom poi file and reset away.
