Nuvi 660 Firmware Version 4.40

Has anyone installed this yet and if so, any negative effects? I'm running 4.30 now and wanted to see what update are available for my unit but until I upgrade to 4.40 it won't give me a list of the rest of them.

Thanks!!

Nothing Major

I installed it in my 660 and didn't see any problems. Also haven't seen anything new, either.

The only thing in the Garmin release notes was something to do with installing retail versions of the 2009 maps.

4.40 is all that is available now

Firmware 4.40 is the only firmware update available for your nüvi. The WebUpdater may also show other ancillary files. I have heard no confirmed reports of problems with the new firmware. It was just to help with the installation of purchased maps when you update the map.

Hi Clint,

As stated by other members, the 4.40 firmware update is OK. However Garmin has yet to address the Nüvi 6xx series (and I also think the Nüvi 3xx series) .mp3 skipping to the next song issue, when alerts are announced on the unit.

I mentioned it in another thread, but got no reaction (must be my accent wink ...

...if you use .WAV files for your alerts, rather than .MP3s (including on units like the 6xx), then by all accounts, the .MP3 skipping problem is alleviated.

It's not something I've tested myself though.

Hi Phil,

I have version 4.40 firmware installed on my Nuuvi 670 and I can report that after testing the .wav file alerts vs. .mp3 file alerts that the .wav files work on my Nüvi 670. There is also no ".mp3 music skipping" when using .wav files as alerts.

I loaded them in manual mode and set distance alerts and they worked as advertised. Then I loaded them in express mode and they also worked with the default distance settings on the unit.

Tailspin

I'm kind of an old fashioned

I'm kind of an old fashioned guy and use my Garmin as a GPS unit and not a MP3 player so, that problem with the alerts doesn't really effect me at all. That's not to say that you rockers out there don't have issues (LOL) just not me.

I always tell myself that I won't update firmware on my electronics products as long as they are working well. Usually I tell myself this as I am downloading and installing the NEW firmware...

I have had good luck with the update. Nothing was broken before and nothing broken after the update. Didn't notice any improvements either.

You are right. Stuff happens on upgrades. Since this one is aimed only at making it easier to update maps, I can't understand why people not updating their maps are taking the risk. My last upgrade was necessary just to get back Jill's voice file which suddenly disappeared. The upgrade caused me to lose my maps entirely, made my touchscreen significantly less sensitive, and screwed up the playing of mp3 books/music with mp3 alerts set on POIs.

Soooo, why did you do it, considering your admonition?

Wav files don't work on my 660

I have tried everyway I can to get a wav file redlight camera audible alert to work on my 660 but nothing happens. It's as if it doesn't recognize the wav file at all. I named the file the exact same name as the other file except with a .wav extension in place of the .mp3 extension.

I was trying to use the wav file to get past the skipping to the next song and no audible alert when the mp3 player was in use and coming up on a red light camera. Any thoughts on what I may be doing wrong? I'm using the POI loader in the express mode.

You need mp3 files

It's my understanding that Garmins will only play mp3 files, no wav or wma or aac files...

Must Be Mp3

You are correct, the audio alert files must be mp3. The way I got around the skipping problem is to not load any mp3 audio alert files with my POI files. sad

News

Posts earlier in this thread point to the successful use of wav files instead of mp3. First reported by Phil Hornby, I think. See:

WAV

Is your wav file a 16-bit mono file -- that seems to be necessary, if I read correctly.

Oops! redface That's right, I forgot, if you make it a TourGuide.

Not sure that's necessary

I at first typed that it had to be a TourGuide, but after reading all the posts, I'm not sure it needs to be.

Hi JustBill,

If you're using .wav files on your unit, in order for them to work, they have to be encoded "mono" and not "stereo". My .wav files are mono, 44100Hz and 16 bit.

I use the "SoundConverter.app" on my Mac, to convert the .wav files from stereo to mono. The program is available on "versiontracker.com" and is available for both Mac & Windows flavors (Shareware - $14)

Mac version:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18047
Windows version:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/141381

When you run the program, you choose what format you want to convert your sound file "to" and then choose from the options below, in that same window, how you want to encode your file.

Also, just remember that the .wav file has to have the same prefix as the POI it's associated with (the same as .mp3's) in order to work properly with your POI file.

For example:
mypoi.csv
mypoi.wav
mypoi.bmp

HTH (hope that helps)

Tailspin
