GPS & EZ-Pass don't co-exist peacefully

I posted this in a thread, which was not relevant, so I decided to move it here.

Obviously Garmin nuvi and EZ-Pass tags are not working well together. Seems that when the nuvi 350 is on in my car the EZ-Pass tag stops communicating with the toll station. I know that they are both receivers, but for a moment the EZ-Pass tag is a transmitter too. Also every receiver emits little signals as well...

The truth is tested with my combination of devices and is proven 100%. Before I had a little experience, which I blamed on expired batteries of the EZ-Pass tag, but I know now that they are interfering too much to be together.

So the best way they solved the problem is by sending me a front plate mountable tag.

Anyone with similat experience?

EZ-Pass & Nuvi 760 good friends

I just drove back and forth between PA and MA. No problems with both either way. Turnpikes, Bridges, etc. all OK

No problem..

Never had a problem and I use all the toll facilities in the New York City area. EZ-Pass and Nuvi 350 works for me.

phil nice AV. Were you at

phil nice AV. Were you at the game by any chance? we were in tier box 616 row A. what an amazing time.
now back on topic. ITs funny that I found this post, I just got a letter in the mail form ez pass saying that i have been running tolls and my ez pass account is getting pulled? The times on the letter exactly correspond with my nuvi 760 purchase which i use everyday to work in nyc. im really interested to see how ez pass will take my plea that its my garmin and not my omission of paying that is at fault. I never saw anything but green lights when i went thru?! interesting..
not blaming garmin just curious to see what is the real problem.

C330 and EZ-pass

I have had no problems with GPS and ez-pass conflicting while using it in my semi. Just got a tag for my car and will test it out on a trip to central Wisconsin next week, hopefully it will continue to work flawlessly. Love my C330 otherwise known as Mot Mot.

ezpass and gps

my Ezpass didn't register on the toll on the Garden State Parkway in NJ. On my return trip, i turned off my GPSr and the Ezpass had no problem.

Garden State EZ Pass

I drove the Garden State up and back to NY with both my Garmmin 660 and my EZ pass hooked up. Both worked fine the whole way.

ezpass and gps - Interference??

Hmmm, is your GPS one of the ones that receive traffic updates? If so, which updates do you get Navteq or MSN?

I haven't had any problem with mine, but then it doesn't get traffic.

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet...but what type of car windshield do you have? Some of the cars now have a special coating on the windshield which looks strange when wearing polarized sunglasses. I wonder if that can make it harder for signals to get through, such that having the GPS on makes it impossible for the ez pass to work anymore.

I get traffic and my EZ Pass/Garmin combo works fine. I drive a 2004 Outback. I have no idea if there's anything special about the windshield. I guess that means there probably isn't.

No problems here with tomtom (on htc kaiser) and magellan (PND) and ezpass.

no problems here either...

Nuvi 360 or 750 perform fine with EZ-Pass from Maine to New Jersey on a regular basis.

No problem with EZ-Pass, but ...

I have never had a problem with my EZ-Pass in the nearly two years that I have had my nuvi 200 mounted. However, my vehicle icon does do a 90-degree turn every time I go through the toll booth. It recovers its orientation in 5 seconds or so.

Passing through the booth shouldn't block the GPS signals long enough to do that, so I suspect some kind of interference from the EZ-Pass.

Never had a problem with EZ tag and Nuvi 360 both mounted to front windshield.

680 (bluetooth operational), EZPassMD, and Cell Phone

linked via Bluetooth to the 680, all play together nicely in our Odyssey. I don't think I've actually been ON the phone at the time of EZPass reading, but I might try that one day just for kicks.

oh, more details:
EZPass mounted per instructions behind rearview mirror.
680 with beanbag on dash.
Cell phone on tray between seats or stowed in cubby below radio.

I have experienced the "EZPass working when buried under seat phenomenon". This happened to me before I owned the GPS. In Maryland, when they ship you the interior EZPass unit, they send it to you in a shielded plastic pouch, with instructions to keep the pouch in your car, and place the unit in the pouch if you do not want the EZPass to be read.

Here's a theory, could the GPS have enough shielding internal to the unit (to help with FCC compliance) that it essentially blocked your EZPass signal? If the EZPass sensors are indeed directly overhead, it sounds like you inadvertently put your GPS(shield) in the exact right place.

Anyone with similar experience?

You don't say what type of vehicle that you have. The link below is from the Illinois Tollway site and is a list of known cars with "difficult" windshields that interfere with tollway transponder signals. It's possible that your vehicle is one of the difficult ones and had a very weak (but usable) signal and adding your GPS provided just enough extra blockage to interfere.

Putting the EZPass in a microwave oven works good for blocking the signal. Just be careful the microwave oven doesn't go on by accident like mine did! What a smell! shock

Gee, that's more high-tech than Illinois. Here, they ship the I-Pass to you wrapped in tin foil.

no problems here with ezpass and nuvi 765t. Hit NY thruway and Pa/NJ bridge

Install Issue?

Some cars have restrictions where the device can be mounted. I would suggest that you contact the agency where you got the E-ZPass to see if there are any specific mounting directions for your make / model of car.

As the other posters in this thread commented, you see to be unique in having this problem. Perhaps you should consider a license plate mount E-ZPass.

never had a problem with mine either. hope its working better for you

Nuvi 350 & Easy Pass

I use both regularly in my car. The EZ Pass is 3 inches above the Nuvi & I have never had any problems.

EZPass Issues

I got a "invalid signal" error code last time I went through a ezpass and had my 660 on. I didn't know what to do so I drove on. Meant to call the ezpass office but it was closed at the time so I don't know if they'll fine me. The point is that you may be right about some kind of issue with the two units.

As long as you call them, they are not going to fine you. I was checking these particular cases and they correspond to pictures taken during your "illegal" pass through the boot.
Please, ask them about the GPS - ez-pass interference...

Since I use my EZPass in three different vehicles, I 'violate' the rules and place it on the dash in the space near where the defroster vents are. Sometimes when turning (most often on the very sharp turns at the toll plaza exits/entrances) the EZPass goes flying across the dash. Once I needed to pull over and search for it, since it slammed into the passenger window and disappeared under the seat! One other time, it slid to the corner of the windshield on the driver's side. I left it there, but it failed to read at the Indiana Toll Road. They have gates there, so people were pretty annoyed, especially the semi behind me that backed up to use another lane.

I pressed the help button and a lady came out with a barcode reader, I handed her the EZPass, and she read the barcode on the unit, and the gate opened.

In most states with these passes, you are required to register the vehicle license plate and description. It is my understanding (they do this in the Bay Area in CA) that they review the videos or photos of toll runners and update the billing records based on this info. I often carry my FasTrak (N CA) with me in rental cars and register the car when I get to the hotel. Then I unregister it when I get home (hoping nobody runs a toll with the rental car in the meantime!!!) On a recent trip from OH to the East Coast, several times the light at the toll plaza did not turn green, but I was billed for the toll according to my statement, so I presume that someone cross-referenced the license plate with the toll-running.

Also, both my FasTrak (N CA) and EZPass (PA) came in a silver antistatic-type pouch with the instructions to keep it in the pouch if you do not want it read... in CA, a carpool lane is free on the bridges, but if you have a FasTrak you will be charged anyway unless you put it in the pouch or elsewhere where they cannot be sensed.

Oh, and by the way, I don't think that I have ever had an issue with the EZPass and my 765T (or the FasTrak and my 680). That is unless these cases were examples. I had my Valentine V1 radar detector, the 765T, and the EZPass all within a couple of feet of one another for the entire time.

separation

When I had my 350 on the windshield, it messed up the compass on the rearview mirror. So I'm not surprised there may be some interference issues.

I've since moved the nüvi to the center console, and I haven't had any problem since.

I don't think they update their billing records based on the video shots. What they DO is bill you automatically for the toll if your license plate is on file and the reader does not register. I really don't think it's necessary to notify them that you will be using a rental car for a couple of days while on business. I would be afraid that it would somehow remember that temporary assignment and bill you for someone else's tolls after you turned the rental car back in.

We now have two pages on this thread, that have gone no where.

With two pages plus on this subject, there seem to be one thing missing. A lot of people are stating the GPS model and how far away it is mounted from the EZPass, But what we really need it the type of cars that are having trouble. This way we can see if there is a pattern or if this is a random problem which I doubt it is.

If your having this problem reply with the GPS model and make along with your car's make and model and also where you have both the EZPass and the GPSr mounted.

For confusion sake if your not having a problem, then no need to reply and clutter the thread. This seems to be the best way to figure this out

You can also look at the link below and see if your car is listed with a problematic windshield.
