GPS & EZ-Pass don't co-exist peacefully

I posted this in a thread, which was not relevant, so I decided to move it here.

Obviously Garmin nuvi and EZ-Pass tags are not working well together. Seems that when the nuvi 350 is on in my car the EZ-Pass tag stops communicating with the toll station. I know that they are both receivers, but for a moment the EZ-Pass tag is a transmitter too. Also every receiver emits little signals as well...

The truth is tested with my combination of devices and is proven 100%. Before I had a little experience, which I blamed on expired batteries of the EZ-Pass tag, but I know now that they are interfering too much to be together.

So the best way they solved the problem is by sending me a front plate mountable tag.

Anyone with similat experience?

Did you have to head out that night to fix some power problems?
Were you driving your utility truck?
Did you stop in the middle of the road where a sign suddenly started violently swinging back and forth?
Did all your loose stuff in the cabin suddenly fly backwards?
Did your flashlight fail?
Did you look out of your window only to look up into a bright light and get a sun burn?
Did you start playing with your mashed potatoes the next day?

If so.. I think I may know the answer to your problem.

Sounds like it's your EZ-Pass tag is going bad.

A few years ago, the EZ Pass center sent out new tags to everyone and included return postage paid packets to return the old tags...there was a note saying the battery may be going bad and they decided to replace all of them due to the battery issue in the tag.

No Problem with EZ-Pass and Garmin

I have a Nuvi 780 attached to my windshield and my EZ-Pass transponder sits on my dash about 2-1/2 feet away. Never had any problems with tolls in the Washington, DC area nor the PA Turnpike.

EZ Pass and Zumo 550 don't coexist peacefully

I experienced similar problems this week with my GPS and EZ Pass. In NY, when existing the Thru-way, the light prompt at the exit flashed an "Call EZ Pass" message. In NJ the drive through recievers did not pick up my EZ Pass.
In WV the attendant took my transponder and waved it around until the reciever picked it up. When I got to the next toll booth I shut of the GPS and it transponder worked fine.
To add to the frustration I think the EZ Pass has toasted my Zumo. The screen switches by itself to "save this location" and the touch screen and hard buttons do not respond. I had to manually turn off the unit to reboot to the navigation screen. The unit has degraded to the point that is now no longer usable.
My GPSis mounted on the left clutch clamp and the transponder on the right side of the windscreen.
I will call Garmin tech support today to see if the unit can be repaired.
I beleive this is a real issue with some GPS/Transponder combiantions

I have no problems with my 760 & 765 Nuvis. My EZ-Pass works fine.

Call ezpass

I have been getting the "call ezpass" on a semi regular basis lately. I haven't quite figured it out. The ezpass tag is about 5-6 years old and this issue is probably about 6 months old (or more). It could be that I go through at 6 or 7 mph in a 5mph only (that would generate a nasty letter though), or that I hold the transponder up on the dash. I could be holding the transponder to close to the GPS that is mounted on the lower left windshield. I know, it should be mounted, but like all other things, it works and "when I get to it". I have yet to be contacted by ezpass and it has been so random that I just don't see the need to call them or verify those times with the actual bill (even though I get the statements). I think I will have to track this down so that I do know.

Not likely

rigid wrote:

I think that idea is rather silly.
The EZ pass is inactive until it passes a check point, when it responds to a poll.

If you all are using the same type of hardware that is in place in Illinois, are you aware that the EZ Pass goes from "on" to "off" just by rotating it 90 degrees ??

There is a ridge across the face of the unit. If that ridge is horizontal, it is ON. If the ridge is vertical, it is OFF. (that is not 100% true but it works a LOT better when horizontal)

Replace your transponder

Call Ezpass and have your transponder replaced, I had to pay for shipping the old tag back. My troubles went away after it was replaced.

No problemo.....

I've used Sun-Pass up and down the sate of Florida every week for years and have NEVER had a problem with either my C340 or my new 1490T. Basically the same technology as EZ-Pass, though I'm not sure if they interact.

Is it possible you have some other issue? Some vehicles are equipped with a heated windshield, or a highly reflective tint which sometimes causes issues with either the Sun-Pass or the GPS.

My boss has a heated windshield in his car, and not only does the GPS not work correctly, but his cellphone only works intermittently at best.....

EZ-Pass & GPS

I was told by EZ-Pass that the batteries in the tags only last about 4 to 5 years.
I called them to get some new velcros tape and asked about thea life span. When they checked ma account they told me I was on borrowed tima and just sent me two new ones.
Unlike Florida (Sun Pass) you can't replace the baterey yourself. With the Sun Pass you can.

As far as a conflict between EZ-Pass and GPS, I have used them from the Fort McHenry tunnel north and all the way from NY to ND without any problem.

Gremlins?

What is the deal with threads,(GPS & EZ Pass don't co-exist peacefully) that pop up under the heading "Popular Content Today's:" with the last reply from more than eleven years ago (08/23/2010)? This happens frequently.

Gremlins maybe?

Popular Content.

It only takes a few hits to put a thread into the "Popular" list ... especially if the count has been recently reset. A thread doesn't have to have recent posts to be popular, it just needs to be opened by one or more users. I have the impression that if the same thread is opened multiple times by the same user, its use count still gets incremented for each access.

at any rate

I have never had an issue with GPS and E-ZPass.

I'm usually rolling through a reader with a GPS, dash cam, and the tag.

I even once went through with 2 E-ZPass tags, and the system was smart enough to charge me only for the first.

NOW, it was the same authority (NJ). I bet if I had one NJ, and one NY, then, both would charge the accounts, but not sure....

I have a Dezl model....

In my work truck if I positioned my Dezl to close to a small TV monitor for back up camera I was constantly getting can't find satellites. By moving it farther away the issue stopped.

Thanks

Thanks for what sounds like a reasonable explanation. I could have sworn it was witchcraft or voodoo in action.

Never had a problem

Using an Ez-Pass with numerous Garmin GPS units going back to a Garmin Nuvi 350 many years ago. Used both the 350 and the EZ-Pass tag for many years and never had an issue. Know lots of others who never have a problem with Garmin's and EZ-Pass tags.

What may cause a problem is special coating on certain windshields that may affect incoming/outgoing signals.

The EZ-Pass tags do apparently need to be replaced from time to time. NY EZ Pass sends me a new tag every now and then to replace the old ones.

Battery

The EZPass units have a permanent battery that may last 10 years.

Chase has the 5% paypal

Chase has the 5% paypal through the end of the year. I should probably put $50 or $60 on my ipass account. Don't use the tollways much around here, so that should cover for the whole year.

Paypal has something called paypal key which is a virtual credit number tied to a card associated with paypal. It's a way of earning paypal points for transactions that don't directly offer paypal.

No problem here, but my EZ-pass is just a flat decal high on the windshield, and doesn't have batteries.

I've had them last as long as 15 years for my motorcycle, but the car was lucky to manage 6.

If you don't keep an eye on your account you'll never know it stopped working since they did away with the light tree that told you if everything was good, low balance, or not paid.

I had to fight a few weeks worth of "no ezpass, higher rate" type tolls because the transponder went bad, I filed a complaint and ended up with a new, smaller, ezpass and the tolls corrected.

Are you sure it's an E-Z Pass and not some other system? Never saw/heard of a flat decal, although there was a big difference between my first and second passes, I guess the tech is always improving.

In the photo (not mine) the top pass is what my first pass looked like, the bottom my second.

I'm in PA, never heard of that system so knowing where sunsetrunner is may help.

Maybe he/she is using the word EZ-Pass in a generic way for some other system's device. I do know there is an area in FL that does use the actual EZ-Pass system. Maybe they can use another system's pass on the EZ-Pass system.

Anyway thanks for the info.
