Things I should have learned in the GPS manual

Today was my first trip and the expereince left me with a question or 3.

1. I discovered poi icons don't show up at over 800' elevation. I really need them at 8mi! So, how do I do get them that far out?

2. All my Starbuck poi's show only the name. I think I have to rename them to include a descriptor. But doesn't that mean I have to have a copy of the icon for each location named to match?

3. Are there shortcuts to tapping the screen 72 times to change anything. I keep looking for a ctl+F2 or something.

4. Map updates: I should qualify for the free update and am registered. Is there anything else I need or will it just show up one day?

Today showed me I have a lot to learn. I do believe the best way to travel the first time is for somebody else to drive. Looking out the windshield was a terrible distraction all day.

OK, I forgot one....

5. I have a location marked as favorite but the 72 wants me to go the wrong way. So I made a route that is correct. Can I call up the route from the favorite?

1. What unit? Many/most units don't show the Custom POIs until zoomed in. This isn't user customizable.

2. No. Just change the location names in the file itself. As long as you keep the filename and the icon name the same, you icon will load the same way.

3. Huh? Again what unit? There's obviously no ctl+F2, but I'm not sure why you are having to tap the screen that many times. What are you trying to do?

4. You may be eligible for a free map update if you purchased a qualifying unit AFTER the map update was announced (March 1) and if the unit came with a previous version of the maps. When did you purchase the unit? What maps are on it now?

5. What unit? Saving Favorites and saving Routes are two completely different things.

7200

Based on the other thread by the same poster the unit is a 7200. Sadly, I'm such a n00b that doesn't mean anything to me but I'd suspect it will tell you exactly which unit he's referring to.

[Edit]
D'Oh! I guess it's likely a Garmin Street Pilot 7200, eh?

1. I noticed the elevation setting in the gpx files. At least I think (hope) that's what the 0.00 is about. Also, setting a favorite in the machine it asks for elevation. I don't see a lot of value in 800' going freeway speeds.

Will the proximity alert sound at 8mi?

2. Cool!

3. OK, maybe it was only 71 but it seems a lot. What was I doing? Once I had an FM station encroach on my transmitter, so I'm switching to internal speaker. No matter how many times I went to the player, I just can't do it from there. But had I done it right, it still would be 11 clicks or so.

Another time I'm trying to find a Starbucks going through custom poi's going from 8mi screen to 800' to see where it really is. If you don't count the 2 times I headed down the wrong menu tree, it really only takes 11 clicks.

4. I bought it 4/3/08 and it has the 2008 maps. Will they just show up? I hope they got the upgrades to Hwy99 in mid CA. The new roadway is a couple hundred yards to the side of the original. Jack kept telling me to turn down some street to get back on the road.

5. It's the SP7200. The button tree sees awkward to me. You start off clicking "Where To?" for favorites, but "Tools" for Routes.

Ok.

1. Just a point of clarification, it's probably better to refer to the map scale as the zoom level rather than the elevation since that might be confused with the elevation reading of the GPS unit itself.

Having said that, the zoom level at which the icons show up isn't user customizable. Garmin seems to have their reasons for the levels at which they show up on the different units. For locations which are important to you, you might try saving them as Favorites since Favorites often will show up at a much greater zoomed out level.

The proximity alert will sound regardless of the zoom level as long as the alert is set properly.

3. It's probably not advisable to be pressing all those buttons while driving. You might want to pull over and stop. As for repeatedly pressing the + button when trying to zoom in, you probably can press and hold the button to zoom in rapidly.

And when searching from the menus, the menus will show the nearest locations, so you can quickly scan the list, select a location, and select "View Map".

4. After May 1, go to your my.Garmin.com page, and information about getting the update disk should show up. If it doesn't, call Garmin and they should fix you up.

5. You'll get used to it. Since your unit stores routes, once you plan a route that goes the way you want it, you can save that route and select it the next time. Simply saving a Favorite, however, will not cause your custom route to be selected the next time.
