Opinions needed - sharing POIs outside of The Factory

OK - here's the deal, obviously from my perspective -

I've created a number of POI files, and have uploaded all but 1 (my family and friends, which I assume few of you would be interested in) to POI-Factory. Yesterday, I finished a POI file for a NJ youth soccer association, MOSA (my kids play for two teams in the league). It contains all the clubs (41) and all the field locations (96) for Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

So, I dropped a quick e-mail on their web master, sharing the link and saying, basically, spread the word, share the link. I got an e-mail from the president of the league, asking for the file so they did not have to register to download it.

Now, I've had dealings inthe past with him, and he is not at the top of my hit parade, so my first thought was ... "harumph!" ... no way.

I'd like to tell the guy to "GPS" ... Go Pound Sand. But, I do not want to just blow him off. What do you guys think? Thanks!

I understand where you are coming from

I understand where you are coming from but why not take the high road and send it to him.

By the way your definition is officially listed at http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/gps smile

Part of me says take the Hgh Road>>>

part of me says tell him to GPS...seems to me if it is too much trouble for him to register to get the files you worked hard to produce that's his lazy a$$ problem.

I'm usually a "high road" kind of guy but in this case the small effort on his part would be a nice little lesson on mending his fences with you.

we see your point, but it is better to take the high road, knowing that you are the better person! smile just my thought!

Everyday is a GREAT day :)

Decisions

Do you really want to fuel or create animosity down the road.

You created a file primarily related to the teams you are involved with.

Attaching the file to an email telling him how happy you are to assist other team members doesn't seem like a lot of work.

The high road usually has a better view.

Low road...

A few problems with just giving the file away and not having him and others register is that...

1. He will not be able to get updated files from other users if someone adds or corrects the file besides yourself.

2. You may be missing other people in the area that have GPS (Original meaning) interests that could contribute to the file later down the road.

I would ask him to consider these points and a little tit for tat..have them put the URL to the POI file into thier newsletter?? I would give him the file anyway..but I would not end up maintaining the file for him unless he is willing to be a part of the team. Make sure you get credit for the work..Maybe create a Google map and have him point the clubs to that URL??

Good luck!

It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes nothing remains quite the same. With all of our running and all of our cunning, If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane.

Interesting delima

That registration costs nothing, and there is zero spam from POI Factory, makes me say to ask him to register. Still, I'd probably offer the file, but politly let him know that updates to the file will only be made available at POI Factory.

Show him what it's like to

Show him what it's like to be one of the "good guys". Maybe he'll get the hint.

Yeah, the high road is overrated

Also, how would he distribute the file. Would he share it via Pando or another file-sharing site and take credit for doing so? I suggest educating him that this site is set up specifically to maintain the files and provide ftp services for downloading. It also educates people on how to use them, and you are sure neither he nor yourself wants to be in the position of educating hundreds of parents on this. You are doing him a favor in keeping the two of you out of a mess. Sounds like a control freak to me, and a lazy one at that.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Tell him to GPS

He's probably had everyone take the high road with him and that's why he is the way he is. I highly doubt that one more person taking the high road will make him turn his entire life around.

Sharing Files

I feel that if you created the file, you can share it or not share it with whom ever you chose.

I think the question you need to ask yourself is the following:

Even though you don't care for the guy that much, is he going to do something useful with the file that will benefit others that you do care about?

Please let us all know what you decide to do.

El presidente

I think el presidente is acting like a two bit dictator by asking you for the file rather than taking the time to register or make the file himself.

For reason pointed out by others I would tell him to register or live without the file, maybe you can tell others at the next game where the file can be had for FREE, once the word gets around the "people" that want the file will not mind registering as your president does.

.

Even if you don't like the guy, I don't see the harm in giving him the file. Isn't the purpose to benefit the kids and parents and make it as convenient for them as possible?

I had a similar request from Escapees RV Club for the file I uploaded here. I told them no problem, whatever they think is most convenient and helpful for their members. I think Escapees will get questions on how to use the file and they will refer people to this site for information and help rather than try to deal with it themselves. For many people, a file by itself is not enough.

Well, Should I Have Been Surprised?

To Everyone -

Thanks for the advise. I kinda pulled a bunch of it together and sent him a note. I nicely said, listen, I'll send you the file, but I can't keep it updated. I am only going to maintain the poi-factory file. You really should join poi-factory, it's free and they do not share your e-mail or spam you. I'll send the file if you put the link up at the MOSA web site. I also signed it off with best regards, as a former club representative and president, just so he realizes I wasn't some schome off the street.

And what did *edited* "he" say? Nothing. He has not, after 3 days, responded to my e-mail.

So, some things never change. And I am glad I didn't sent the file.

Now, ultimately, I wanted to get the file to the parents of the players, not the league or clubs themselves. I still have a quite a few friends still invloved throught MOSA. I still keep in touch and I still have their e-mails. I am going to do an end run.

Again, thanks to all for responding.

Food for thought

You do realize that if, or when, he comes to the site he'll see what you think of him. Which could be a good thing but just thought to mention it.

OOPS!!!

@SpaceForThePoppa:
What I thought and surprised it wasn't brought up is that 2 of your kids are in the league and unless this is a league where coaches and others are paid he probably has earned a lot more than GPS data in volunteering.

I'd suggest sending it to him which you did and sending updates once in a while.

Yep - I thought about that ...

If you look at my other posts to this site, well, I play it close to the vest and usually do not vent like that. So - I am considering edting my comments.

To someone else's point - he does get paid, quite nicely, for his work as president. He has been president for quite awhile.

Anyway - thanks for those who posted their opinion to the topic.
