Garmin's online support - issues!

i have recently submitted a question to Garmin's support asking them about all the serial numbers and unlock numbers on my product page there when I login to my account. I have no idea what to do with these numbers especially the mapsource one since my garmin didn't come with mapsource software, so I have no idea what to use that for.

anyway, I contacted them asking them all these questions and they reploed but I have yet to read the reply. Every time I click on their answer link I get a page full of JSP and Java errors and exceptions, complaining about server error 500.

So, I contacted them to tell them that their online page is full of error, someone needs to look at the logs to figure out what's going on, no answer yet!

this brings me to this, although their products are tested well, their website sucks. Tomtom's online help and tools are far more thought of them Garmin's. I have a page with all these unlock codes and whatever but I have not read something that says

" when you buy our product, you get this and that and this number is used for this, where as that .... "

I mean it's a simple matter but they kind of leave you hanging there wondering what to do next!

They are hardware savy but not software!

tomtom on the other hand are software savy, write stuff that's user friendly but their hardware is buggy and not fully tested

only if you can have a company that combines both? Not sure how is the story with the other GPs vendor Magellin for example.

WOW! One bad day....

Garmin support is tops. End of story. The codes you are referring to are the ones you would need if something happened to your unit. You shouldn't have to do anything.

The servers at Garmin are temporarily down. Don't mistake your not getting the answers you wanted on the one day that they are down as them not being the best. Read the testimonials on this site and you will understand.

They have been down way too long

I have been checking since the weekend and the server still down, too much for a production server!

I read good reviews on their product and support, I am just sharing my first experience with their online support.

i am tempted to call them, i think I will try that next if their server still down

Everyday is a GREAT day :)

Try Using The Phone

You should call them, I personally don't have the patience for any sort of online help. I have called garmin many times and have always hung up satisfied.

I don't think that's the point.

I think his comment has to do with him receiving numbers instead of answers. So he comes here instead and instead gets basically a 'this is how it is and you will like it'.

Having worked in a technical support environment for years, I can tell you that if the client doesn't speak up, keeping things in check, quality tends to deteriorate - a 'sleep in your laurels' effect, if you will.

He's entitled to his opinion and has every right to demand them to be dissatisfied.

End of story? Shouldn't be, unless you are willing to settle for less and less every time.

Krieger.

Only Getting Better

During the Holidays when everybody was getting new GPSr Garmin had long hold time but quickley responded by hiring more help. One of my calls I got a newbie and it was obvious that her trainer was feeding her answers but even thaat shows a committment to training.

Im the same way with online help. I am new to the gps just got a 650. I have called them twice times once for the 2009 maps, the other time to get MapSource. I was taken care of quick and hung up satisfied.

just my 2 cents

Garmin is Great

The code for the mapsource is if you Get a Mapsouce disk, if you dont have one then dont do anything with it, The serial number is for when you register your garmin. If you had a bad time with garmin try some of the others, garmin is in the usa, i bet the rest of them if you can even get to them dont speekadenglish. Look thru some other sites and some posts and you will appreciate Garmin.

Java errors

Joe2008,

Do you think that the problem with the JAVA ERRORS might be in your BROWSER?

The reason I bring this up as I don't see anyone else reporting the same problem.

So it might be your problem and not Garmins.

I was also going to suggest this. Being a Systems Administrator, I guess I always look at my own stuff first before blaming someone else. I'm curious Joe, what browser do you use? I know that with a lot of sites I have problems with IE 7 (which I use at work). I normally use Firefox at home without issues. Another thing you can try is to clear your browser cache.

Or maybe tweak one or more of the JAVA settings. I can use online Garmin support with both IE7 and Firefox and get no JAVA errors at all.

Here is the HTTP server error 500 from their web server, not my browser. If there is a Garmin employee here, please note that this is happening whenever I click on answer : 2947038

Web HTTP errors 500 are generated on the web server because it encountered an issue with the application.

As far as your original

As far as your original post, those serial numbers, unlock codes and registration codes are for your unit. Those are the same codes that was in the yellow piece of paper that came with your unit. For each Garmin map, there is a corresponding code and unlock code. I have 3 sets of codes:
1 set for North America NT v8
1 set for Navigator Europe NT v9
1 set for Navigator North America NT 2008 (upgrade)

If I choose to upgrade to the latest versions of the map, then it will be added to the list when registered.

Browser cache

What is a "browser cache"... and how do you clear it? [Windows-XP Pro]

Also, how does this help?

The browser cache keeps a copy of every web page you've visited. The idea being that once its downloaded to your PC, the next time you access it, it'll load faster. That was really designed for the days when we used modems. With broadband, page load time isn't all that big of an issue. What happens over time is that the cache gets so loaded that some code gets corupted when its trys to download and execute on your machine.

Go to "Tools", then "Internet Options", then look for a section called "Temporary Internet Files". Click the "Delete" button. There is usually no need to delete cookies. This is not a sure fire fix, but its a minimum troubleshooting step.

I'm sorry if you felt 'slammed', that was not the intention, but 'end of story' is not an opinion, it is a statement parents use with their kids when they want to end a discussion, not one used over an adult exchange of ideas, which is what this great site is about.

Rant to the Right People

Krieger wrote:

Krieger.

That is very true He does have the right!!!

But ranting and raving to us is not doing him any good. He should be telling Garmin about the website problem. Also knowing there was suppose to be a problem with the online support sending another e-mail to them seems not very smart.

They post their phone number allover everything they have to make it easier for people to talk to the support team.

I just get very tired of hearing people rant about Garmin's tech support. Especially when they don't even follow what would be the proper course (using logic).

I've contacted Garmin probably 10 to 15 times over the last 5 years for what were some troubles I was having with my units and some just to ask a question about procedural matted over something I didn't quite understand. I have never had an unpleasant experience with any of the tech support I've talked to. In fact sometime they had to stay with me for a while until I was sure I understood the answer. I never had one ever be rude to me even when it seemed I was a little slow in understanding the answer.

WELL I GUESS I'VE BEEN RANTING ALSO!

The idea behind posing

The idea behind posing issues on the website here is to see if others are experiencing the same issues or not. Sending them another message online was only intended to alert them about their on-line system, help them, assist them in catching their own bugs. People who maintain such websites appreciate such feedback to keep their SLA's up.

The great thing about this forum is that people get to choose what discussion they want to be part of, so thanks for ranting along!

I guess if I have a bad experience I am not supposed to share it, I am only supposed to speak of the good ones ...

Anyway, I returned my tomtom 720 and bought a garmin 660 for a reason, so far I am happy with the unit, not so happy with their online support.

H Hannah wrote:

True, if they can't read their own email messages, it's not likely they will be reading anything HERE.

OTOH, making a phone call is useless to convey a server error. Cut and paste into an email is the ONLY way.

The only possible purpose of a phone call would be to get a "good" email address but why should that be necessary??

I agree with his rant but I also agree that posting it here won't help solve the problem.

Of course, someone HERE has now answered his original questions; kind of ironic! mrgreen

Your Post

I think this stuff you’re getting from Garmin is a Java problem with your computer. I’ve been to their web site many, many times and never had a problem. Of course I use a macBook so maybe that’s the difference. No, not really, but I think the Java settings on your computer may be in need of a bit of tweaking. Their customer service has always been top notch as have their GPS units. I’ve both the 360 and 660 and they are both superb. None of the others out there compare an I've tried Magellan and know some folks with Tom Toms. They are all envious. I’m not saying though I'm always happy with what Garmin has to say, like with ‘free’ map updates and such, but then, they are in the business of making money and not in the business of giving away the store.
You made a good purchase of a Garmin GPS. Enjoy it.

I have visited that website many times and just went there tonight to see if I can get the same error your getting, no dice, went in and sent test e-mail and navigated around with no problem.

So now this is my question, is your problem Garmin's problem?

If other users can get in fine why should you be so upset at Garmin? the problem appears to be at your PC or your inability to resolve the issue at your end.

If tomorrow when you connect your GPSr to the cigarette plug the car doesn't start, who will you call, Garmin or your friendly mechanic?

If others were having the same issues with that website, then I could understand the motive of your posting.

My suggestion is, if you have access to another PC to try and see if you still experience the same problem.

I guess I made this whole thing up then, not only that, I seem to be running Internet Explorer version 7 on a Windows Vista that's running on a Java Virtual Machine, spitting out Java runtime exception errors only when I go on your beloved Garmin website.

For your information, I got an e-mail from Garmin stating the issue on their website was due to a bug in their support application.

So, you guys can chill out now and pretend that the world doesn't revolve around Garmin only but around everyone else.

You guys like to shoot the messenger rather than listen to him. I was hoping that i would have some good feedback but instead some ignorants like to pretend that since their world is so perfect others must be crazy! Thank God this isn't a jungle but only a website

I am still proud of my Garmin and I still think their online support sucks, here you have it. If you feel insulted by me saying that then i wonder why you are so intimidated by comments about a company? do you work there? ummmmm maybe!

please don't lose sleep over this, it's just a stupid issue on their website that aint worth all of this. Forget this, I would rather move on than have someone trying to convince me that the problem is me and not the website. I guess next time I need to video tape the whole thing, seeing is believing right?

I guess next time I need to video tape the whole thing, seeing is believing right?

what a peice of work!

Java Virtual Machine? Well there's your problem!! It's obvious you need to use a computer to access the site, not a make believe coffee maker! grin

lol, sometimes I wonder how

lol, sometimes I wonder how people managed to operate a computer

Garmin support

It sounds like it is time to put this one to bed. What one person's problem may not happen to another. I find that with a number of companys. and computers. I run IE7 my wife has to run IE6 due to a conflict with one program on her computer. Both are the same models bought the same day. I'll probably get shot now but it's kind of like asking us here if we get the free updated maps when garmin is the only one that can answer the question.
