How to? Line Breaks, New line, Line Feed

How do I create a newline with a POI file saved as a CSV. I have tried several methods mentioned here, and also used the example in the POI loader help file but have not had any success. Can someone please post an example, or show me a file here that has the line breaks in it?

Thanks

multi-line descriptions

The NC-Recreation file has some multi-line records. There are also some examples in the page for Garmin CSV file format.

I've attached them to this topic as related links.

POI Line Break

I'm also having problems with the nuvi350 NOT putting the line break where the POI file directs.

EXAMPLE FROM THE NC RECREATION POI FILE:
POI Line=-78.504,33.93723,"KOA Campgrond - Shallote/Brunswick Beach","Sunset Beach NC 28468 (BREAK)(910) 579 7562 koacampers@atmc.net".

The nuvi350 display=.....Sunset Beach NC 28468 (910) (BREAK) 579 7562 (BREAK) koacampers@atmc.net.

As shown, the nuvi didn't put the break before the area code as the POI file directed. I'm using v4.3 on the nuvi350 and the 'POILoader_2400Beta.exe' loader version.

Is this normal? Is there a problem with my nuvi setup? Is there a problem with one of these new versions? I've tried multiple POI files and even created a TEST POI file, all behaving the same. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

missing a " ??

I think you need a " after the ZIP code in the example.

Line breaks - same results - possible bug in software

Ahh...thanks, you've both verified that I am not crazy. At least not in this case. I took the NC Rec file for example and I am looking at the "boat & kayak launch" entry.

-77.92563,34.11377,"boat & kayak launch","Wilmington NC
8/A -Dusk;higher tide needed for motors"

My 350 seperates at like this

boat & kayak
launch

Wilmington NC 8/a -Dusk;higher
tide needed for motors

There has to be a bug in this version of software.

Different results

When I load the file using POI Loader 2.3.2 into a StreetPilot i2, the lines break as shown in the file:

POI Line=-78.504,33.93723,"KOA Campgrond - Shallote/Brunswick Beach","Sunset Beach NC 28468 (BREAK)(910) 579 7562 koacampers@atmc.net".

POI Break

Could there possibly be a problem with the nuvi350 software, or the new beta version loader? I sent off an email to Garmin. Will let you know when I hear something. Thanks.

Test confirms it is not the Beta POI Loader

I just backleveled the POI Loader to 2.3.2 from 2.4 and the same thing happens. It appears to be in the unit.

POI Break

Thought you may be interested in knowing I uninstalled the Beta version Uploader and installed the v2.3.2 with the same results as my previous post; so it doesn't appear the problem is in the uploader. I may try installing a previous version of firmware in the nuvi350, but probably will wait until I hear from Garmin.

Sorry weebl, we must have been posting about the same time.

allotted spaces

It may not be possible to get the exact line break to appear on your gps unit as where you put it in the csv file. There are only a certain number of spaces available per each display line. I have found on my c550 there is one line that will only handle 18 spaces, the other lines above and below that one, will take 20 spaces.
You can write a test csv file with a series of numbers or the alphabet in a repeating series (without forced line breaks) so you can figure out how many spaces your particular unit can accomodate on each line. Then you can make your forced line breaks where you want to get the desired output.
I hope this made sense.

This condition may give the problem of "line not breaking where I put it in the csv".

It would be really nice...

if Garmin were to include stuff like that in their documentation.

Wait, that makes too much sense, so it probably can't ever be done. smile

However

The above posts have the csv line breaks before the actual break on the gps unit display. When y'all figure that one out let me know.

Line breaks

I think the condition we are seeing on our 350 units is that they are not using the line breaks in the file at all and just simply wrapping text.

I guess I could format the fields by adding extra spaces, but then it wouldn't look correct on everyone else's without this problem.

nuvi POI Breaks

After spending several hours reading other forms, it appears that having the ability to insert forced line-breaks in the comments field via 'line feed' got lost with v3.3 upgrade.

I can force line-breaks in the comments field by replacing the line feed with html code, but not sure if this causes other problems.

Haven't heard anything from Garmin, maybe tomorrow.

POI Line Breaks

I didn't get any response to my emails to Garmin, so I gave them a call. The Rep said 'he hadn't heard of this problem, but that didn't mean it wasn't present'. (According to another GPS forum site, a user had updated to Nuvi 3.30 and uploaded his POI. He noticed that the 'break lines' in the comment text were not working. .... dated Mid 2006).

The Rep said the Custom POI function is made available by Garmin, but it is not their utmost prioity. He said maybe something can be done when the next firmware update comes out.

So does that leave us nuvi350 users with no line breaks in the comment field? Or do we modify the POI files with the necessary html code to force the line breaks? If I get time I'll work on a program to do this.

I have a Nuvi 760. I have a

I have a Nuvi 760. I have a very large POI file which I created using Google Earth. Saving this file from Google Earth created "br/" in brackets where a new line (carriage return) would be expected in the description column. It does not cause a new line - it just displays these characters. I tried some of the techniques here, but haven't been able to come up with a way to replace all of these with something that causes a new line. As this file is over 6000 lines, I need a way to a replace all in Excel.

If you're referring to <br>, POI Verifier has an option to convert this to standard linebreaks. Available at:

New line

When building a POI with Excel place the name of the location in column C then the address in column D. After you enter the number & street name do an alt+enter to start a new line in the same cell. After you enter the City, State Zip another alt-enter will give you another line in the cell so on and so on. When finished set the row height to 12.75 and then save the file as a csv and it will look great. Take a look at the POI I posted for "The Fresh Markets"

Presumably, you saved the information from Google Earth as a .kml file. Which fields did the <br/> show up in? (I've seen them used in <address> & <Snippet> - but not <description>)

Here's how I solved the line break problem on my nuvi 250W

None of the standard methods ("br" surrounded by the less-than and greater-than characters; Alt-Enter; etc) worked for me. After some experimentation, I got line breaks to work on my nuvi 250W by doing the following:

--Put nonsense characters wherever I want a line break to occur. Eg, &&&&
--Save the file as a csv file, and close it.
--Right-click the file name, and use the "Open With..." drop-down menu to open with MS Word.
--Use Word's Replace command to replace every instance of &&&& with ^l (that's the caret symbol that appears on a keyboard's "6" key, followed by a lower-case letter el).
--Save the file without changing the file name or the extension, and close it.
--Open the file with Excel to view the line breaks. If everything worked correctly, you'll see little squares at the end of each line before it breaks.

Excel formatting has no effect on CSV

Row height has no effect on CSV. Saving to CSV strips out all formatting and cell information.
