Comments in a POI File

Does anyone know if the Garmin C330 would accept comments interspersed with the POI data? I would use it for editing only, and would hope the Garmin would ignore it.
On a related note, when you load POI files in a folder,
they are loaded into the Garmin in the sequence that you built them, not alphabetically like Windows Explorer shows them. Is there a way to resequence them, so that the file names shows up alphabetically, when you hit Custom POI?

Let's see.

Where are you proposing to insert this additional data. In an extra column, perhaps? Not sure if it would ignore it or choke on it. Someone else who has done it might chime in, but the quickest way to test it would be to create a 2 or 3 line POI file and load it and see what happens.

On my Zumo, the POI categories (which are created from the POI files themselves) are listed alphabetically.

Cycle Gear
Geocaching
Honda Dealers
Krispy Kreme
Virginia State Parks
etc.

The POI locations themselves are listed in order of proximity to your current location. Your GPSr will show the 50 closest locations to where you are. You can't change this. But you can search based on the name. Or you can change your location by turning the GPSr receiver function off.

POI Files

If you're referring to csv files, only 4 fields are loaded into the Garmin. It's best to keep the csv format correct, i.e. with 4 or less fields. It may mess up other programs when trying to parse your file. You could save the original file as xls (Excel) file, delete the comments, and upload that file as a csv while keeping the Excel file for your use.

I believe the Garmin displays the Custom POIs in an order based on distance from your location, not in the order they were loaded.

Sequence of files in Custom POI

My C330 does show the POI data, as you say, in an order based on distance from my location. I am referring to the file names you give each file in the POI folder that you load. It shows the last file I created, as the last entry in Custom POI. I would like to see it first.

If you are using Windows Explorer to view the files on your computer, just click on the heading at the top of the right window. Clicking on 'Name' will organize them alphabetically with the folders first; clicking on it again will reverse the order. Clicking on 'Date Modified' will organize them in the date order; clicking on it again will reverse the order. The same applies to 'Size' and 'Type' headings. Hope this helps. Not sure if this is what you need.

ADDED:
If you're referring to the order the POI files are displayed in the folder on the GPS, they are displayed alphabetically on the nuvi 350.

Are you creating a folder for each POI Category that you want to have show up. As I said (and I don't know if you unit works the same way), mine show up alphabetically.

For example, my folders would be as follows.

>Honda Dealers
...Honda Dealers.csv
>Krispy Kreme
...Krispy Kreme.csv
>Virginia State Parks
...Virginia State Parks.csv

And the categories show up in alphabetical order on my Zumo.

On my C330, under "Custom

On my C330, under "Custom POIs", the listing is in alphabetical order with folders and/or data listed first. Under a folder category, the listing is in alphabetical order as well. As follows:

ABC (folder)
...ABC.csv (data within folder)
DEF.csv (not a folder)
GHI (folder)
...ABC.csv (data within folder)
HIJ data.csv (not a folder)
IJK (folder>)
...ABC.csv (data within folder)
...DEF.csv (data within folder)

etc.

If I select "All categories", I still get alphabetical order. When I select a with multiple entries, the listing is in order of nearest Poi of that folder to me, with each one after being the next furtherst away.

If you are using one entry per P.O.I.csv,(can't imagine why) then you will have closest to farthest away listed. Hope this answers your question.

Haven't tried your question about comments, others will have to answer - I don't see a need at this time for me.

So, I tested this.

I put miscellaneous characters is column E and F and loaded a POI file. It loaded fine and the misc info did not show up.

So, I'd say put whatever comments you want in the POI file beyond the first four columns. POI Loader seems to ignore it and it didn't cause any problems for me.

YMMV.

Mess up other programs

POI Loader and POI Verifier both cuts off anything over 4 fields, thereby creating a POI per Garmin's correct POI format; but over 4 fields may cause problems for other programs. Please keep the POIs in the correct format, i.e. no more than 4 fields. (See POI Loader's Help for examples.)

Yes, I agree for files uploaded to the site.

I was simply providing the info for someone who wanted to do it for their own use. Sorry for any confusion.

Your c340 will not be able to read custom poi's from the sd card.
you can search this site for more info using 'c340 and sd card' or select "gps models" at the top of this page, then follow the links to the model c340 and related links.

solution to the alphabetize issue

Hey Alleghany,

I was having the exact same problem you were: when you go to Custom POIs, then select "Select Database" the categories would show up in random order.

The solution is to place each .csv or .gpx file in a subfolder of the POI directory with the Name you want to show in the Garmin unit. When you run POI Loader, select the parent directory and that's it!

The other advantage of this is that you can group POI files in the same folder, and then they only show up as one Database (Category).

On my POIs

I give each folder a name in the order I want them to appear
under Custom POIs. I do this by naming the folders alphabetically.
Naming the folders:
ARestaurants
-->Applebees
-->Crackerbarrel
-->GoldenCorral
-->OliveGarden
-->Sizzler
BGasTravelCenters
-->Loves
-->FlyingJ
-->TA
CombinedRestAreas
ConvenienceGAS
-->WaWa
-->Sheetz
-->SevenEleven
FriendsInAZ
TimeZones

I have more than that but I put them in an order so that the first "page"
of Custom PIOs on my GPSr will be the ones I look for most frequently!
Seems to work for me !

Which unit do you have?

Which unit has references to Databases and Categories? -- the reason I ask, is because this concept is used by Garmin's GPI_Viewer utility, but I've not seen it used before (not in the Nüvi,Zümo,StreetPilot Cxxx world anyway)

comments in a csv file

I found that putting a "#" (pound sign) at the beging of the line in the csv file where I want to place my comments works. When running POILoader it stripps out the "#" (pound sign) and everything after it to the end of the line where the crlf (carrage return/line feed) is. This is common in programming. ie.....

# Photo_RedLights by Ken Luce Dundee OR (Deliri)
#longitudeN, latitudeW, name, comment
#-122.94689, 45.30642, 99W and Springbrook camera, Newberg OR

As you can see I use the pound sign for testing my POI.

semi-colon works for me

I use semi-colon ( ; ) to insert comment lines in the csv files, or to comment out POIs and works fine.
