Suggestions on how to update existing and new POI uploads

Not sure if this ever talked about:

Fact: All of us know that the POI being submitted to this site use some automation to get the LONG/LAT. Sometimes this does not give an exact result.

Fact: Some people give feedback if their POI have something wrong.

Suggestion:
1. Is it possible if POI being corrected, that the owner verified the location. You can use any tool google maps, mapquest etc. using the satellite view to confirm.

2. If the owner verfied that the location is correct, could we add a word (verified with date) at the end of the address.

Result:
1. Anyone who use this POI files will be happy. If they selected a location with verified with date, he/she is sure that he will never be lost. Unless the business have moved or closed. At least he has the idea when it was last verified. So the POI user can judge if he needs to verify it again to make sure.
2. Any POI that do not have "verified" word, user of this POI can do decide if he still wants to go and see if the POI is correct or do a research before traveling.

.

I think that it is a good idea to verify any POI you are going to for the first time. I find that coordinates obtained from addresses are often inaccurate. The McAllen, TX Circuit City is 250 miles off. When I tried to correct it with just the address, it was still 2 blocks off. I needed to compare a satellite picture with the store map to get the correct coordinates, which I have given to Miss POI. When I did the Escapees file, almost all the coordinates obtained from addresses were off, so I had to correct and verify each one (only 19) by satellite picture. This is not practical with a large file. The only solution is for us to send in corrections whenever we find an error.

I don't think there is room on the GPS info screen for the word "verified". My unit already is truncating many addresses and phone numbers.

Some of the Poi are very

Some of the Poi are very large (over 1,000). I think notifying the OP and correcting the problems is HIGHLY beneficial to all but verifying each address will not be practical.

I can vouch

I can vouch for the labor intensity required to verify everything.
Every "location" in the Rest Areas Combined POI file was verified in at least 2 places and usually 3-4 places and it required a lot of hours - I can assure you.

Every location took 10-30 minutes to verify and get all the info into the file correctly. Some took an hour. Some 5 minutes.

Even with that amount of hours there were mistakes -fortunately many users have reported mistakes directly to me and we have been correcting them !

No. That is not what I meant.

No. That is not what I meant. Even myself won't subject to updating a 1000+ poi.

IF SOMEBODY SEND YOU A CORRECTION it may not be a big deal to add a comment that the waypoint was already verified. That way any user of your POI knows that the location was already verified on a certain date. IF the date is too old, the user of you POI can decide if the location may still be valid or the business my have closed.

Poi Verified

I think it would be good when you post a poi that you stated it was verfied on a date you can put that in the discussion box when uploading a new poi. I think it would be even better if when people make a poi or update one that they put the city and state as alot of the ones for the usa don't help people on the west coast if the place is in the east coast or the other way around.

not only on the discussion

I prefer it on the POI file itself.

A good example in csv file. At the end of the address line add the word "Verified mm/dd/ccyy" so if you download this poi and uploaded to your unit. If you view the poi details you will see when it was verified. Then it's your decision if it waypoint looks too old or have not been verified yet.

If you have a GPx and have a mapsource you can manually add it on the comment section.

You only put the verified if you really verified the place using any tool.

Putting it on discussion will not be helpfull because you don't have a way to see the discussion thread when you are on the road and the only thing infront of you is your gps unit.

not only on the discussion

I miss spelled on my last post I meant in the description block on the poi upload form not a a group discussion thread. That way you would read it before you download. One other comment, when someone replys to a thread why is in most cases they only reply to part of it and not the whole thing. I have a friend that if you ask two question in and e-mail he will only answer to one.
jost curious.

Are you refering to the

Are you refering to the quote? if yes, I have not done it. But I think they cut and paste or edit the quote.

Are you refering to the

No that not it. If you ask 2 questions times are when you get a reply there will be a reply to one but not both then evenually it gets lost in he conversion. Nothing serious just wonderd if it was just me or if it happens to other.
