Garmin GPS V Problem

Hello,

I have a Garmin GPS V. It was working. I took the batteries out and put it in a drawer for about six months.

Now, on batteries or external power, I can not acquire a satellite signal. I understand that it could take up to 15 minutes to acquire a signal if this unit as been off for an extended amount of time, but the unit keeps turning off while trying to get a location after a few minutes.

I can put it into "indoor" mode and the unit will not power off, just when trying to get a fix.

Looking for suggestions ... of course, this GPS is long out of warranty.

Garmin still may help

Perhaps Garmin might help if you give them a call -- can't hurt.

My Nuvi 660 was out of warranty but Garmin replaced it when I had problem not finding satellites. Can't hurt to call them.

I have a Garmin GPS 38 that it is an older model than the “V”; out of curiosity after reading your post I took it out of the drawer were it has been sitting without batteries for a very long time, after installing fresh batteries it has been sitting in the yard trying to acquire for more than 40 minutes.

When I go to the DIST/SUN page it shows Jul 09/2007, this page is supposed to show the actual date and time after it talks to the birds and gets an updated almanac, if I remember correctly when I bought this unit (lost the manual) it said to change the date in the GPSr to expedite the updating of the almanac.

I’m going to let it sit in the yard to find out how long it will take on its own to perform the update without me changing the date.

My suggestion to you is to power it on, go to the setup page and change the date and try it again where you have an open sky view.

Just did it, after 50 minutes it got the almanac and it is showing today's date and time, it has 8 birds in the rings and talking to 4 of them.

Just found the GPS 38 Manual on-line and it says to choose the country where it will be used to expedite almanac.

Problem Solved

Thanks for the suggestions. I am on six months parental leave taking care of the little one. An uninterrupted phone call to Garmin will be difficult.

I may have found a solution. The reset key combinations I found mentioned on the internet did not work ... I found a couple of different ones such as OUT + IN + POWER.

They all were similar, so I tried a couple of random combinations similar to the ones posted.

I ended up trying OUT + POWER and that seemed to clear the satellite data and after that, it found the satellites and powered on as usual.

So, problem solved.

good deal

Glad you found the problem.

While trying to see if my GPS38 would work after many months sitting in a drawer without batteries I got the biggest surprise of all, not only the unit worked but all the waypoints and routes that were there when I removed the batteries are still there, that most be some powerful capacitors to retain the information after so many months.
