Google to partner with Garmin also

According to CNet

"Starting Tuesday, people using Google Maps to plan trips will be able to send location data to their Garmin GPS systems, the companies announced on Monday. The feature, called "Send-to-Garmin", will eliminate the need to re-key route information into GPS devices."

This is in addition to Garmin's partnership with MapQuest.

Wouldn't it be great if a firmware for existing units allowed even those without routes capability to accept the "Send-to-Garmin" routes?

Do you have a link to the cnet article. I didnt see it in Garmins press release section or Cnet at all.

Its a shame the Cnet guy who died trying to find help for his stranded family in the woods didnt have a garmin...

Heres the link

Likewise, Garmin has inked a deal with Mapquest to send mapping information from that online service to Garmin's GPS products. The service is expected to launch in April. Mapquest already lets people send mapping information to mobile phones.

Roughly one year ago, Garmin and Mapquest launched application programming interfaces intended to encourage developers to write applications linking GPS systems to online services.

Ok, so...........................

we can send data from Google to Garmin "GPS". Now what kind of GPS do we have to buy to make this happen. I can't feature them giving us something so good, that we don't have to anti-up for a new unit to use the new feature.

Garmin 660

HELLO!!! TOMORROW is APRIL

HELLO!!! TOMORROW is APRIL FOOL'S DAY!! Google pulled a stunt like this LAST YEAR and the year before that. Hmmmm, makes ya wonder don't it! (LOL) No thinks, I'll just sit back and watch it all play out.

Your Portion Of Light Whether you are a brilliant flame or but a tiny spark matters not-for the world needs whatever portion of light is yours to give.

Ya, aprils fools

One article i read said the release was 4\15. The other said Tues.

Hmmm.. hope its tomorrow.

Currently, on google maps, you can send to a TomTom.

So does anyone know how its saved to the Garmin and how you would access the saved the location? Is it a POI or is it in your recently found or???

No April Fools Joke

It's actually for real, for those who haven't checked it out on Googe Maps. Essentially, you need to connect your computer to your Garmin and install the site onto the GPS that way. Call me picky, but when I saw this, I was thinking that it would somehow allow you to send it through Garmin satelite, without having to actually connect it to your computer.

Anyway, it apparently gets saved in your favorites.

.

Just a point of clarification so people aren't confused, the GPS satellites are owned by the government.

Garmin does not own the satellites and thus cannot send data to the GPS units via the satellites.

Send to Garmin

Is this for real?

.

Yes. You can send Waypoints from Google Maps to selected GPS units. You must install the Garmin Communicator plug in for it to work on your computer.

You can't send routes.

Another thread on this

Another thread was started which goes into some detail about how to use the new feature in Google Maps.

Will it work with the streepilot series?

Val - Nuvi 785t and Streetpilot C340

...test in progress

I walked a friend through the plug-in installation process, and he will test with his C340 and report back.

C340 No Mass Storage

I'll be amazed if it works with C340.

If I've read the threads correctly the direct to GPS only works with units that have mass storage.
