Greasy Spoons, The Best Burgers

I know we have a lot of the chain hamburger places but some of the best are from little greasy spoon mom and pop places. I would like to see a project of a collection of the best burger joints we have found. I'm specially intersted in AZ and So Cal. and So NV as we take motorcycle trips just to go for burgers. I'm new and don't know how to create yet but would be willing to learn if there is enough interest in this.

PS...5/28/2008
Again you don't know how much I appreciate all the interest I get with this thread, but as Miss POI and I have asked, please be helpful when submitting your suggestions. Please include the following:

We are up to almost 80 locations and 800 downloads. Thanks. And again I couldn't do it without all your help....Harpo

The mom & pop burger joint POI has a listing for Dizzy Issie's in Baltimore. It's really called Dizzy Izzie's (or just The Dizz for people who are really in the know). It's line 120 in the data.

BTW If you are a fan of the Food Network's Ace of Cakes, this is where the staff unwinds after a long day of cake making.

Thanks for all the the great places. If you don't see yours added it is because you didn't submit in the proper format. That is all I ask. 176 people have so far and there's are posted. I wish I lived close enough for a bike trip to some of these places. I can't belive I don't have any secret greasy spoons here in the Phoenix area.

Mom/Pop Burgers and More....

I’ve just now stumbled on this posting even though it has been around since 08.
The Food Network has a show hosted by Guy Fieri called Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. While the guy is a little over top for my taste (pun not intended) he does show some pretty interesting mom/pop operations with yummy foods that are unique.

It might be neat to plan a road trip to some of these locations

This place is busy all the time because it is run by a small greek family and they really care about quality. If you don't mind standing in line to place an order and then pick up food on a tray then you will be happy. Very small place. Like a road side diner with only twenty seats. Most of the town of Cobourg walks in, places and order and then stands by the pick up window. Behind the counter is a very colourful family yelling at each as they cook up fantastic food. Everything is fresh and the greek salad is great. The souvlaki in the pita can be either pork or chicken or maybe even lamb and it is fantastic. The tzatziki is home made every day. Or have a cheese burger. Best deal in town and I mean way better than fast food junk.

Based out of a 120 year old bunk house in north Scottsdale, the site was an original Stagecoach stop on the way to Phoenix. You sit at outdoor picnic tables around multiple camp fires. On a good weekend you’ll see (real) cowboys, locals, bikers and tourists dancing to live country music. Burgers are good, the beer is real cold and the atmosphere is great fun.

OK, so it’s better known as a brew pub than a hamburger joint, but it is both my wife’s and my favorite place for burgers in the Valley; and we tried a lot of them! The Scottsdale location is right across the street from Hacienda Harley Davidson so Harpo66 should love it! It’s also the home of my absolute favorite beer in either AZ or MI (where I now live). The Scottsdale location is in a strip-mall, but the Tempe location is in an old warehouse a couple blocks away from University of Arizona and it has a greasy-spoon atmosphere. They are so widely popular that you will find a variety of patrons, not just college kids.

BTW, sorry, but they don’t list an actual address for the Scottsdale location and I won’t be back for another month to check it out in person. But I will if you need it before posting.

Been there, done that

djs wrote:

No burger list is complete without the true original burger joint! Louis Lunch is recognized as the first place to serve a hamburger ... this place opened in 1895!! How cool is that??

Charming place, but the burgers are OK at best. Despite their sign that all burgers are cooked medium-rare unless otherwise asked, mine was well done.

Their food handling practices are bizarre. Most health codes forbid handling ready to serve food with bare hands (i.e., if you're going to cook it after, bare hands are OK).

So I'm sitting at the counter, watching the guy form and cook them in those neat vertical cookers. He has a glove on his left hand, his right hand is bare. He's forming the burgers with his left (gloved) hand--raw meat, gloved hand. I couldn't figure that out.

But when the burgers were done, he assembled them with both hands not only using a bare hand on it, but also the gloved hand used for the raw meat. Strange.

One in Houston

Searched and didn't see the Bellaire Broiler Burger anywhere on the site, so here's my recommendation:

Bellaire Broiler Burger
5216 Bellaire Boulevard
Bellaire, TX 77401-3902
(713) 668-8171
Open Mon-Sat 11am-8pm

From google maps: 29.706226,-95.471878

The decor is apparently still from the '60s, which only adds to the old school feel. While I'm not from Houston, locals always give it high marks, and I've never had a bad meal there myself (which can include nice onion rings and milkshakes).
