Greasy Spoons, The Best Burgers

Hmmm? Hyperlinks and the first internet browser were invented in the mid 90's so you were not surfing the net in '82. In '82 email existed but only on expensive mainframes and not accessible to the common folks.

As I recall Microsoft released its internet explorer in 95. Prior to Windows everything we did was with GEM the first GUI for PC's and came out in the mid 80's in response to Apple's GUI. Prior to that everything was done with DOS commands. It was real fun sending and receiving files using DOS command lines and browsing files the same way.

I think Compuserve and MCI started commercial email in the late 80's.

Restaurant/dive bar at the corner of Belmont and Turner in Indianapolis.

No frills dining room with simple menu that features sour cream battered fries, excellent hamburgers/cheeseburgers, and the best bean soup in town. Governor Bayh was known to frequent this establishment for lunch.

Norma's won the Best Burger in Washington State for the year 2007, no doubt for their John Wayne Burger. Breakfast, sandwiches, and seafood too. Nice if you are in a hurry because you can call from your cell phone and have your burger ready when you get there.

Orcutt Burgers is the original Mom & Pop operation. Santa Maria Burgers is a spin-off restaurant operated by the son of the Orcutt Burgers owners. Both restaurants offer identical menus and excellent quality. The ingredients are fresh and the helpings are huge! We like everything we've tried but are specially fond of the egg sandwich for breakfast and the made-to-order burgers, fries, onion rings and shakes for lunch or dinner. Outstanding!

Wow, I'm insulted!

I’ve been surfing the internet for a long time – even before it was popular. I bought my first home computer in 1982. It was an Atari 400 with 16K of memory! I had a tape recorder to go with it for saving and loading programs. I picked up a 300 BAUD modem, and typed-in a “browser” program that I found in a magazine! (300 BAUD means 300 bits per second! Can you say S-L-O-W? My new Comcast cable set-up is 6.0 Million bits per second!) At the time, Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) were popular. You’d get a list of phone numbers and dial directly to the modem of the BBS you wanted to connect to! Compuserve was the biggest thing going at the time. But I digress…

P.S. I worked at one of the largest mainframe computer centers on the East Coast.

I have one located in Scott AR, just a few miles SE of Little Rock. It is home of the Hub Cap Burger which describes the size perfectly. It is in an old General Store, so the atmosphere adds to the mystique and history. A favorite of President Bill Clinton while he was governor of Arkansas.

If you like sliders you can't beat Greene's in Farmington Hills. Way better than Bates or Hunter House. Greene's and Bates are both places where you sit on padded metal stools at a counter.
