Send Google Maps and Mapquest results straight to your garmin GPS

Google and Mapquest have teamed up with Garmin to allow users to import routes and locations that they find on their respective services onto their Garmin GPS. This obviously requires a usb connection of sorts, but should be available on google starting tomorrow.

AFAIK,

you can send routes from Mapquest only. Google no longer supports it. Your Garmin unit must, of course, support routes wink

You can still use Google Maps to send points (locations) to your Nuvi.

Loss of Google support bites... :-(

Found out tonight that Google doesn't support routes, which bites. Wonder why they quit?

I prefer Google maps to Mapquest, but Mapquest will work. I am finding that I prefer Mapquest to Road Trip for Mac, which has a clunky interface.

Mapquest

Mapquest sometimes works and sometimes not. When it works it's OK. You can do basically the same thing with whats in the 700 series.

Is it possible to get Google map data while driving?

Not on the GPS. You may be

Not on the GPS. You may be able to use a laptop connected via a Cell aircard modem. Then hook your gps to the laptop via USB and upload the information.

All this while cruising through traffic with the rest of the folks talking on cell phones, reading the paper, putting on make-up, pantyhose, and who knows what else.

I don't remember ever being able to load routes from Google Maps. Can someone verify that they ever included this feature?

Sending routes from Google Maps was never supported. They only came out with sending Waypoints.

sent a route to my garmin

sent a route to my garmin 770 from mapquest and it said it was successful but I can't find it. I know I have done this before but I must of done something different.
I looked in routes and custom pois.
Maybe I need to save the file to a different location. I'll try that. Just thinking out loud here, sorry but wanted to mention this.
I think it's been on before but I couldn't find it. Anyone else having this issue?

.

You need to go to "My Data" on the unit and IMPORT the route.

thanks

200w

Just joined this site...need some help. Barely use my 200w but when I do it's been a life saver. Recently fired it up and it said I needed to upgrade the software. How do I go about doing this? I don't have a cord and the only place it would plug into is the memory card slot, correct?

current software version: 2.90
Audio ver 2.20
GPS SW ver 3.00s

I read about the secret acquiring satellite screen...pressing and holding the signal bar area...pretty cool. Any other secret tricks on a 200w?

Thx

any poi on a public saved map can be sent to gps

Had plenty of poi's on a private google map, and send didn't show gps option. As soon as I made my map public, and search on one of my saved poi's google finds it, then I can send to gps smile

no cable

does anyone know if you can send with mapquest to my Nuvi without the cable? I can do this with msn direct. Is there any other service with this capablility?

not that I am aware of

MapQuest uses the Garmin Communicator Browser Plugin to communicate with your nuvi

Only if you have MSN traffic

debblr wrote:

This only works if you subscribe to MSN traffic. Won't work otherwise.

What is the benefit of loading Mapquest maps?

I have a Nuvi 200W with a 2008 map. Does loading a Mapquest map help me in some way? I'm new to the forum and haven't done much other than loading some POIs.

If you are speaking about routes.Mapquest supports it.

Google maps can transfer

Google maps can transfer individual addresses to the Nuvi, not routes unfortunately.

.

And neither MapQuest nor Google Maps can send routes to units that don't support stored routes on the unit.

Also with bing maps

You also can send to GPS from Bing (formally live) maps.

1. Right click on the map and add a pushpin and give the pushpin a name. (You can select multiple pushpins and they will all transfer.)

2. A collections editor pop-up will appear. There is an actions menu in the upper right. Select Actions->Send->GPS

3. Select USB. After a brief pause select Send Locations Now.

4. Look in your Favorites on your GPS to see the locations.

I tried it.Good info.Also

I tried it.Good info. Also see that it works like Google and Mapquest to put in a address or business and send to gps.

Edit.Found a location I plan to drive to Friday.Sent it to gps and found all the info there but with some extra wording that I have no idea what it is.Went back to Google maps and sent same location to gps. Results there where correct.Looks like bing needs some work.

google to Garmin

I can only say again... I used the Google routes send to Garmin in Summer '08 when I visited California. I sent the route for LAX to Long Beach hotel and some of my booked journeys. It was so simple. Garmin stopped it and now you have to own the maps on CD to use Garmin software to send routes.

Sorry MM, but it was definitely supported, I KNOW I USED IT!!!

Motorcycle Mama wrote:

See above posting.

.

Ok. My post was that you can't send ROUTES to units that don't support STORED routes. Your GPS unit DOES support stored routes.

Also, Google Maps does not have the ability to send ROUTES to the GPS unit, currently. It can send Waypoints.

MapQuest can send both.

IMO,

Mapsource is the best way to create and send routes as you can fine-tune your route by adding numerous waypoints. You can't really accomplish this via Mapquest routes....the Nuvi still recalculates the entire route and will take you the way it sees fit. When done in Mapsource, you can add waypoints along the route and force it to go exactly the way YOU want it to go. I use this feature when traveling from Boston to Joyzee, for example. I add multiple waypoints down parkways and roads the Nuvi would never take you on. The Nuvi typically takes you through the most severe congestion on this trip. My $.02 for this morning smile

re IMO

Hi Uber360

That stinks!
The reason that I want to send routes to Garmin is so that I can know the route that it is taking me beforehand. With the old Google route I was able to drag the route that I wanted and know that was where I was going. Now I have to zoom out on plan view to see where she (garmin) is taking me.
To use Mapsource, don't you have to have the maps on CD rather than the preloaded maps that come on the Garmin?

Send route to feature:

Even when you dragged the blue routing line in Google Maps to tweak the route, the Nuvi would over-ride it and select what it thinks is the best routing. It essentially picks up Pt A (start) and Pt B (end) regardless of what you did between A & B. (You can tweak the routing in Mapquest too. The Nuvi still does what it thinks best.)

I'm not certain I can answer the MapSource question. When I downloaded my one-time free map updates for my 760, Mapsource was part of the download package. So, when I use MapSource, I see the same version of the maps that are loaded on my 760, but with somewhat less detail.

breaking news...

I have just tried "RoadTrip" (Mac) and because I got a one off update, the map now appears in the roadtrip window, allowing me to plan routes. Still not as easy as the Google method but at least I can see what she is planning for me.
