Can you stop a Garmin from calculating POI proximity

This may seem odd, but I want to prevent my nuvi 650 from calculationg POI proximity. I have loaded about 200,000 utility assets in my unit as custom POI's. My goal is to enter any asset number and get driving direction to that asset (the same process you use when you enter a street address and get driving directions to that address). If I load all 200,000 custom POI's into one category, my unit goes bonkers. If I break them up into smaller caetegories of a few thousand POI's each, it will work but it takes the unit 5-10 minutes to start up once I enter the Custom POI screen (presumably because it is calculating proximity). This is also inconvenient because I have to go through a two level search - first the category and then the POI.

Can I prevent my nuvi 650 from calculating proximity on custom POI's, or should I use a different technique such as building custom maps that include my assets?

further break down

I would break it down to smaller chunks based on criteria that you are familiar and placed them on separate folders.

Then I would only load the chunks (folder) I will be using that day or period of days, I just can't see the need for having all 200,000 available at the same time all the time.

Are There 200,000 Different Locations?

Or, are 200,000 assets located at maybe 500 locations. If the latter, I understand this is the easy way to load them, but you could have a file showing asset tag# and location# and only load the 500 different locations.

Also, assuming these POI's are loaded on the SD card, what happens if you insert the card only after the gps boots? Does it still take as long before you can set a route? I was wondering whether the combination of trying to acquire satellites and read POI's into memory at the same time just might be making it worse.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Yep, I have 200,000 locations

and I need to have access to all 200,000 all the time. I said earlier that my application is different from the typical GPS application.

BTW, don't you want to have access to all the addresses in your Garmin, all the time?

The performance problem is not at boot-up. I let the nuvi boot up and locate itself first. But, the first time I access the custom POI's, there is a five minute pause while it calculates proximity.

asset as custom POI??

This all sounds very interesting to me, but I don't understand the asset term here.

What is an "asset", in this context?

Thanks-

.

The things that I would suggest to try are to break the file down into segments and see if this has an effect.

Also, I would say to move them to the unit itself instead of the SD card (if they are on the card). This should speed it up as well.

To answer your original question, no there's no way to stop the nuvi from calculate the proximity.
