What Gives w/ My Red Light Camera

I live near a new Red Light Camera intersection, so I pass through it frequently. I noticed two things... only one makes sense.

A) The camera will flash if someone doesn't come to a complete stop before making a right hand turn. 3 directions of traffic flow have a Yield but that 4th direction will catch you if you're not careful.

B) The camera will flash at irrelevant times (consistently). ie: it was very obvious that nobody ran the light but it will flash.

I don't know if traffic traveling through the intersection causes the opposite camera a false alarm but that flash is CONSTANTLY going off (I'd say 40% of the time I'm in the intersection, it goes off. Some *could* be legit but others are definately not. Seems like a big waste of time to "monitor" the camera if its going off this often).

Anyone else that frequents these camera locations notice their camera is going off without cause?

Red Light cameras

My daughter got a red Light ticket -- she did not stop while making a right turn-- clocked her at 17 mph and there was four pictures-- all good clear pictures-- Cost her $405-- of course this is California! So they can take multi-pictures. The one you describe may have had a mal-function.

I don't see my Red light cam's going off like you described. If fact, I was tempted to run one just to be sure it was working properly. I decided not to. smile

I wondered if it might be

I wondered if it might be taking a pic from a diff angle, but then I assumed it might flash the camera from all the cameras at once then.

Surely its not giving that many false alarms, so perhaps my eye is just missing the culprit. It just happens so often that I'm looking for someone to run the light. Then nobody enters the intersection and FLASH!

Regarding B) Is it also a

Regarding B)
Is it also a speed camera? Maybe someone is speeding through on a green.

It could be just sensitive

well, when they installed a brand new red light camera in my area, the flash used to go off at random times for like the first month, as if they were trying to calibrate it...

But then again it's been awhile since that one was installed and I've noticed that the camera still goes off particularly when you don't stop completely before the pedestrian crosswalk. If your front bumper is slightly over the first line of the pedestrian crosswalk although you made a complete stop, the flash still goes off. That happened to me a couple of times, but no tickets so far...

Like bperk said, it could also be a speed camera...now that would suck. T.T

Probably a malfunction

Wait, so a red light camera

Wait, so a red light camera can get you even on a right turn?

Yeap, cause you are suppose

Yeap, cause you are suppose to go to a full stop before turning.

If there is no radar there, then I doubt it is a speed camera. Ihave never heard of laser speed camera, it would a hit and miss since the the width of the laser is only ~.036 inches for every feet out from the source

How can you GO to a full

How can you GO to a full stop? If you are going at all, you aren't stopping. lol couldn't resist

Maybe it's a

Maybe it's a paparazzi speed camera that can't wait for that ultimate shot of the perfect licence plate?

wink haha

I'll keep an eye on it and

I'll keep an eye on it and let ya'll know what I find. These are a few good things to keep looking for.

Sharper4...........

there was on at the corner of Coit and 121 in Plano, Tx. that was doing that. It was a mal-function, and the camera was shut down until the camera company came out and fixed it. Seemed like it would flash every time it seen a car.

Right on Red...

Definately...

A buddy of mine got tagged for right on red here in CA.

I wish we had those cameras

Here in Virginia, you're allowed to turn right on red AFTER stop. I can't begin to count the number of folks that just cruise through a red making a right turn, often without EVER slowing down.

Yep, you gotta watch out for

Yep, you gotta watch out for those Plano guys. Now, if you were on the north side of 121 and lived in Frisco, they would work hahaha. Must be a neighbor

I've read somewhere that as

I've read somewhere that as long as you are under 14 mph when making a right turn (the law in California calls for a complete stop), the camera will not go off. I haven't tried it to see if that was true or not.

Right turn AFTER a FULL stop

Hi, everyone,

The same is true for Delaware. What I wasn't aware of was the possibility of a red light cam catching the failure to stop before making that right turn.

For those who live in or near Maryland, the governor was apparently so impressed with the results of a "limited" speed camera trial that he now wants them utilized state wide. In the past, Maryland has been very creative when it comes to the types of vehicles, etc. that they've placed radar units in/on. I'm sure they won't disappoint anyone with the speed cams either! Be careful out there!

14 mph seems high to me

While it sounds like a small number compared to speed limits, 14 mph still seems like a rather high speed to be making a right turn against a red when you also need to be checking if any traffic is coming. To me 14 mph is NOT a "California rolling stop". Maybe 5mph.

flash on left turns

I noticed the other day, flashes going off as vehicles were making a left turn (on the arrow). The traffic going straight had the red light, the only vehicles moving through the intersection were turning left on a green arrow.

True, but if it's a red light camera the speed is done by the same sensors that are used as the red light. If you run a red your speed will be in the picture. As far as I know every red light camera can be used as a speed camera the only thing stopping it is unpassed law.

When camera flashes at everything it's a melfuntion as stated above. The most comon problem is film not in properly.

Complete stop

Haven't you heard George Carlin's airline announcement?

"Please remain seated until the aircraft comes to a complete stop."

Not a partial stop. Because when the plane comes to a partial stop, I partially get up, partially grab my bag, and partially get off the plane.
