Loaded my own POI file onto my 3225 ... now have questions

Hi all,

Thanks for all the tips on downloading CSV files, creating a multi-category POI file with the Magellan POI editor and copying my file to the Magellan - this has been a very easy experience thanks to all of you!

Now, onto my issues...

1) I assumed (it appears wrongly) that if I copy my own POI file that it would show the icons from my POI file *as well as* the icons from the built-in POIs. However, once I select my own POI file, I do NOT see the built-in POIs - I only the ones in my POI file. Does anyone know if I can see icons from both?

2) A more annoying thing...how do I revert to the built-in POIs. I can easily choose my own POI file ("Change My POI file") but what if I want to forget about my own POI file and go back to seeing the built-in POIs? I don't see how to de-select my POI file! Right now, I'm doing this by connecting to my PC and renaming my POI file...not exactly convenient.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

ssarmazi

RTFM !!! OK, sorry. mrgreen
Knowing Magellan, that might not help!

Is the 3225 really intended to have "custom" POIs in addition to the built-in file? Maybe not. My 4000 is but your model may not. It seems really strange that it would let you select a different file with no way to go back. Hopefully even Magellan wouldn't do something that dumb.

If not, your replacement file would have to be some larger, more comprehensive file than the one included.

There is a 6 M item file floating around out there but I don't know if it would work for you or not.
Need some 32XX users to chime in.

Got the 6M POI file no

Got the 6M POI file no problem: overwrote the existing file (\MAP\US48_POI.POI) and all is well. However, I'm in Canada and that doesn't help me except when I travel!

There are several stores which I usually frequent (Best Buy, Costco, etc...) which aren't in the built-in Canada POI file. So I made my own POI file by downloading/editing a bunch of CSV files found on this site, and created my_poi file with the POI editor, and stored it in \USR\CPOI\my_poi.mgln.

Now I just can't get the device to 'point' back to the built-in .POI file!

That sounds just like my 4000.
I believe that there is no way you can STOP the unit from using the built-in POI file (no standard way) so.........are you sure it is NOT still using the main POI file? I'm betting that it IS.

Activating something in CPOI does NOT deactivate the main file. It uses both.

Both POI will work

I second with ka1167. When you select an enhanced POI file, the main POI file will still work. To make main POIs appear in map display, you have to select POIs by going to User Options > POI Selection.

It's definitely not using

It's definitely not using the standard POI file - it's definitely using my own. I can tell by the icons. And I've got all the built-in POIs selected in User Options > POI Selection.

So what you folks are saying is that the built-in POIs should *always* be showing, and that my own POIs (from my own POI file) should *also* be showing?

Hmmmmm, sounds like a call to magellan...or a return to Costco sad

I think you would get a

I think you would get a better response from Costco than magellan.

the built-in .POI file

I think the problems is in the name you used for custom POI. Chane the name of your file my_poi.mgln into something else xxx.mgln , if this is working out then post it here to let other know.

Sorry, that didn't do it. I used another name (sarmazian_poi.mgln) and still no change. Thanks for the suggestion, though, I thought for a minute that this would work!

Time to go back to the beginning.

You loaded a US48 POI file, replacing the original file. If there were any Canadian POIs originally, you lost them when you loaded the new file.

I think THAT is what caused your problem as there now are NO POIs in your area to be displayed.......except for the ones in your custom file.

Unless I missed something in the story, the unit IS LOOKING in the internal file but there is nothing there in your area......since you changed the file.
You might want to consider changing back !!

True, I replaced the US48

True, I replaced the US48 POI file, but that's not what I use - I use the Canada POI file since I live in Canada (I only upgraded the US48 for when I travel). At least, I assume it's using the Canada POI file since I've set region to Canada. Also, I replaced the US48 file the day I bought the 3225 - and I've certainly seen all the built-in Canada POIs since then.

Anyway, I just deleted my custom POI file (sarmazian.mgln) and restarted the Magellan, and all canadian POIs and icons are back, and obviously, my custom POIs are gone. It's definitely NOT allowing me to view both the built-in POIs *and* my custom POIs. Bummer.

used another name

don't use name with the letter " poi" on it. Try it.

Custom POI Problem for me too

dtlotus wrote:

I was going to suggest not using a name with an Underscore _ in it .......

***BUT THEN ***

I took my first extended trip today with my 4000.
Starting out, it looked like all the POIs were working. Somewhere during the trip, however, I ended up just like the OP.....all the "built in" POIs stopped appearing on the map.

[Update about 2 hours later...]

It appears that this might be more of a "quirk" than a defect. After reading the manual and playing with the unit for about 2 hours, I "think" I may have found the answer: All the POIs are still there, it's just that the "custom" ones seem to display on the map regardless of your "zoom level" but the built-in ones ONLY DISPLAY WHEN ZOOMED IN FAIRLY CLOSE. Strange and confusing but something I can deal with......I think; it's going to take another real road test to be sure.

Now, why does the 4000 always seem to say: "No exit POIs on this highway." ( Off to read the REST of the "fine" manual). mrgreen

Magellan Maestro 4250// MIO C310X

I think that's it, ka1167!

I think that's it, ka1167! They've probaby been there all along, I just couldn't see them because when I'm driving, it's usually not very zoomed in.

I will double-check tomorrow and post.

BTW, "Exit POIs" works fine on my 3225...as long as you're on the highway when you tap on it.

Well, one would think that the display would stay zoomed enough so that you could SEE them all the time......since you can NOT set alarms on the built-in ones . If you can't see them and you can't hear them, they might as well not be there at all!!!

I'll have to test the EXIT thing again. Maybe they don't consider the Interstate out in the prairie to be a "freeway".

I had mine in 3D mode last trip. Think I'll go back to 2D next time. That might make some differece too.

I REALLY wish you could set alarms on the Rest Areas. I just HATE to sail past one when you have to ......well, you know! mrgreen

--
Magellan Maestro 4250// MIO C310X

You can certainly

You can certainly set proximity alarms for the Custom POI files of Rest Areas. My C330 or C340 gives me an alert at 5400 feet which is where I set it with POI LOader. Interesting !!!!!!!
That is with using the Combined Rest Area listing which has the coordinates for locations set at the "entrances" to the rest areas !
Whoops - just noticed you weren't using a Garmin - sorry about that as far as the POI Loader program !

My MM actually claims to have rest areas in the built-in POI file BUT on that unit, you can't set alerts for built-in items. How stupid is that?

No alerts for the built-ins but no address and/or phone number for Customs; screwed either way !!!
