Question for the experts out there

My college professor has asked me to look around for a GPS that is arrow extremely accurate and that is arrow simple to use. Those are the only 2 requirements. He also said that he would prefer a unit that is used for surveying because they tend to be very accurate. Does anybody know of what brand, or type or who I should talk to about this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh money is not an issue.

P.S. This is all of the information that I have about what he wants. and i need to know this info ASAP.
Thank you all for any help.

Trimble

The construction company that is building the cells for our landfill got a Trimble GPS system last year and it is accurate to 3-5 millimetres, that's less than 3/16 of an inch, they have it on a bulldozer for final grade and a portable grade stick that they just put anywhere and it gives them position and grade. They did say it cost them around $250,000.00 for the system and setup, so it is no wonder he said NO.

ask him more questions

Does he want it for car navigating in the streets, at sea, on tha hiking trail, mounting on a cruise missile?

Why does he needs a surveying GPS, is it because they are more accurate or is he quitting his job to become a surveyor?

Based on the answer we can make a better suggestion.

Airport needed

The Equipment that is that Accurate has to be left over night at an Airport that has a "Known GPS spot" that the unit needs to Calibrate itself. But then they are very accurate..Most also use a laser between 3 point also to triangulate.

ASK...

Why not just ask the CIA or FBI for help... it would probably be cheaper. smile

I'd like to know what the purpose of this system would go into.

He wants an accurate gps

He wants an accurate gps unit for marking our releve sites. Basically he wants something to mark center points of our ecological assessment sites.

Amature vs Professional

Unless you want to spend the money, time and energy to use a commercial system I think that you want to look at a gps that will give you the coordinates you can read on the spot. This leaves out the streetpilots, and limits you to the nuvi line or some of the other on the trail models for garmin. If being 3 - 15 feet off is a problem, most of us don't have information on those systems. On some of the nuvi's you can see the margin of error around the arrow.

More info needed

You need to ask him "how much is he willing to pay" and "what level of accuracy does he want". You may want to look at John Deere's system used by farmers. If you subscribe to their correction signal ($800/year) you can get accuracy down to +/- 4 inches.

You could visit your local JD dealer to look at the gear and get pricing. Here's a link to the JD website.

Again without more info - I'm just guessing.

Trimble is the gold standard, so I'm not sure why he wouldn't want that.

Im just doing what im told

I know that but he told me that they were to complicated for him to use. So Im going by what he said.

Well, then the next best thing is probably the Magellan Pro line.

More info needed

OCHSFISHER - in order to get some guidance from this site you will need to ask your professor some questions:

1. How much is he willing to spend?
2. What is the minimum level of accuracy he requires?

Without this we are just guessing.

I agree. I would wonder why the teacher simply does not go online himself and see what's out there.

ummm guys if you read my

ummm guys if you read my first post I said that he wants something that is extremely accurate 1-5 feet, and money is not an issue. basically that means it doesnt matter about the cost, it can be expensive.

Yes we read it. It just doesn't make sense, however, in light of your subsequent post in which you said he outright dismissed the best unit(s) on the market.

Do you see the problem?

If not, maybe you need to take a course in simple logic! wink

Ask NASA for assistance. They carry the worlds finest and most expensive unit to date.

Although at this stage money would definitely be an issue.

At Cape Canaveral we use several makes. Trimble, Trak 9000, Interstate Electronics Corp. (L-3 Comm), Larus STS 5400 thru 5800 series, and ZEI are a few that come to mind. Mostly used for Missile tracking systems and timing reference though. Needless to say the gov't prices are... well let's say a bit astronautical smile (a little space humor)

Here in Canada we use a metric tape measure, the night stars and my Beagle Charlie. He.. BTW is accurate to with 1 meter and only cost me $300. LOL mrgreen
