Newbie to GPS world

I got a TomTom One XL for Christmas. First two addresses I entered for navigation came up "no match found" argh.... one is a federal building in downtown Atlanta. FAQ at TomTom home, no help. do I already need a new map downloaded?

searches

Each brand of GPSr has quirks when it comes to putting in addresses and searching...capitalizations, punctuation, directional notations...and lack thereof can all make a difference between finding, and not finding something when you put in an address. Example: if you have an address of 123 W. 4th St. - your map data might know the same location as 123 4TH ST W. so sometimes, you need to try variations on what you're looking for.

thank you. I found the streets in Tom Tom, but the numbers generated "no match found" message. But I'll keep trying. Thanks again for responding.

Try looking here...

Your map maybe old

If my memory served me right, TomTom One XL has TomTom 6 in it. The latest map is v675.1409. You can find the map version by touch the lower right corner in the navigation window where the signal strength bar located, then touch the version block in the next window, something like 6.030 etc. A green screen will pop up with your map version. If you do not have that then you can contact TomTom to get the latest.

I was talking to a tomtom rep the other day in best buy, and he was trying to get me to buy a tomtom. Im not trying to dis tomtom, but i found out from him that tomtom's basemap for their units come from mapquest.

Never trust a BestBuy sales employee

From my experience, which includes yesterday at BestBuy, never ever trust what a BestBuy or CircuitCity salesperson is telling you. They really don't know anything. First, mapquest does not make maps. Second, mapquest's maps are provided by NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas. And third, TeleAtlas provides North America maps for TomTom. I think NAVTEQ provides European maps for TomTom.

Yesterday's experience at BB only supported my previous perception of them: that they really don't know anything about what they are selling. For example, the salesperson stated that the nuvi 200W and the nuvi 350 have the same mounting system. This is incorrect. Although they are similar, the 350's mount has a built-in replicator for the car charger. This allows for easy placement and removal of the gps unit without having to mess around with the charging cable since the cable is already attached to the mount. The 200W's mount, on the other hand, doesn't have a replicator port. The USB charging cable must be attached to the unit itself.

Sorry for the protracted post but I'm just letting consumers aware of WorstBuy, I mean BestBuy.

me too...

That's funny b/c I also tried to find a federal building and my TomTom 920 couldn't find the street name. The street was clearly on the map but no name. I had to go in there and add the street for sharing with mapshare.

And they were both wrong

Regardless of who told you that, they gave you incorrect information. MapQuest does not create maps. Like all of the online map sites as well as all of the GPS manufacturers, they buy or license their maps from either TeleAtlas or Navteq. Nobody "gets" their maps from MapQuest, Google, or otherwise.

Navteq

....and if you go to Mapquest's site and pull up a map, you'll see the Navteq name near the bottom.

Your assumption was not correct. TomTom used mostly TeleAtlas map in their models for both European and North American markets, which usually also have more frequent updates than other GPS providers. In some occasions, TomTom uses NavTeq maps, mostly based on model, for example their Rider unit (weather sealed for bikes) use exclusively NavTeq maps. According to some, their general NA 650 update looks like NavTeq as well.
