Proximity Alerts on POIs

I downloaded the "Rest Stop" POI file, and loaded it into my Garmin 350. I checked and the closest one was 12 miles north on I-95 in Florida. I loaded it using the POI Loader using the Express (Recommended) option. The POI file readme seemed to imply that proximity alerting is on by default. But when I drove by the rest stop on my way home, there was no indication whatsoever. Do I need to use the manual load option and specify the distance in feet for the alert?

Thanks!

Proximity Alerts

To get a proximity alert you need to use manual and it will let you put in a distance or speed you will want to use distance for a rest area. The distance is in feet so you have to figure if you want a one mile alert you need to put in 5280 feet. and so on. Also since you have a 350 that has a MP3 player on it. You can also put a MP3 (named the same as the POI file) in the folder with the rest stop POI and it will play the mp3 file instead of the attention tone.

Also Check

Also check to make sure that you have alerts checked to on under settings/proximity points/alerts

Last time I checked, I had about 10,000 alerting POIs. Every one loaded in Express mode!

Manual mode is just for one-off experiments, isn't it? wink

Manual vs Express

I think it has to do with your file type and if you want speed or distance.

If you just have a plain csv file, you must do a Manual load to get distance alerts. If you have any speed settings (@) in the file, express will pick them up. I have not found a way to get distance to work in express mode.

Phil - do you know of a way to get distance in a plain csv file?

If the file truly is plain - then it's going to be a struggle. You might get somewhere by renaming the file itself though.

In my case, the bulk of the alerts come from a UK Speed Camera database and are supplied as .csv's. They have the required speed information, but POI Loader's distances are not to my liking.

I use this software http://www.cbrom.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/3.html?submenu=2 to convert them to .gpx, which sets the distances more appropriately (and doubles them up, into Proximity Alerts and Overspeed Alerts). That way, I always get one alert, but don't get any more unless I continue to drive like a mad man!.

There's a discussion about the use of that software here: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=v...

Proximity Alerts on POIs

Another factor to be aware of with highway rest stops is that some of them have coordinates far enough off the highway that they will not always trigger an alert as the unit considers them off route.

MM, where's your icon?

What happened to your icon, MM? Your comment; "Show off!!!" befits that icon. Just an observation. Don't beat me up or run me over with your bike.
