POI Database Tool 1/10

For those of you who are using the POI Database tool, you'll notice a few changes. I just installed an updated version with these new features:

- Downloaded POI files will show a POI ID# if a name is not entered for a POI

- The fourth column (description) field for downloaded POI files now includes information from the notes field (along with the address and phone number)

- Added a download counter (visible to authorized maintainers on the POI Type Locations screen)

- Enhanced the POI Location list. It can now be sorted by state/city, lon, or lat. Long lists are broken into separate pages (up to 100 locations per page) - (visibile to maintainers)

- Extra spaces at the start / end of fields are automatically removed as they're saved to the database.

Paintball to new system ??

Any chance of converting the Paintball site to the new system for me ???

Are you referring to being able to sort/search for custom poi's?

JM,
I've just uploaded my first custom poi's. I uploaded the super walmart list (always helpful when traveling!!) and hospitals (10,000 poi's).

In looking at them, I just realized I can't sort them. They are sorted by distance. I guess functionally that's ok as you're traveling, but if you're searching for a place there's no way to search except for the up/down arrows. I'm using a Nuvi 360

Any help or advice? Thanks so much

sort/search

The features I mentioned above are for a tool we're using to build POI files on the POI Factory web server. (It's not related to functionality on your GPS.)

As far as searching through large POI files on your GPS, the only suggestion I have to offer is the [spell] feature, which lets you search through the list by name. This would probably work okay for the hospitals file, but it isn't very helpful for files where everything has the same name.

JM

Thanks JM

...it makes the file much more readable and easier to use.

I still need to write some import tools to convert existing CSV files. I'll use your file as a test case when the tools are ready.

POI Database Tool 1/10

Hi all

Is sub. a free program or?

Does anyone know how to make linebreak i customPoi's for Nüvi 660?

Best Regards from
Pallejc
www.GratisPoi.dk

I am curious

kea957, What website did you go to in order to find 10,000 hospitals and their coordinates? All of the sites I go to is like a chicken pecking corn. You have to get them one at a time.

Garmin 660

hospitals file

It sounds like it might be the hospitals file we have at POI Factory:

http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles/us/hospitals

It's based on data from USGS. (You'll notice from the coverage map that data is better for some states than others.)

JM

That Hospitals file is a lot

That Hospitals file is a lot like the schools file that i looked at - lots of (historical) entries...I for one find those historical entries to be of zero value for general-purpose navigation.

Just my $0.02

POI Database tool

Can you tell me more about this program - POI Database tool.

Also do you know of a program that will render the longitude & latitude from a name, address file? I tried DeLorme Street Atlas 7 it locates the address but does not render the longitude & latitude.

Finding longitude and latitude

GPS visualizer is a site where you can enter one or more addresses and the output is the location in long and latitude. Go to: http://gpsvisualizer.com/convert?form=address

About the database tool

JM
I have been working on the Radio Station files, updating them in Excel. They include several fields for sorting from a master list. Just wondering if your database tool would give me any benefits?
If so, can I get access?

POI Database

Right now, it's a good tool for beginners or for projects where several people are working together.

Key features:

* locations are entered one-at-a-time via a web form

* It let's several people edit the same file at the same time.

* It automatically generates a properly formatted CSV file.

In the future, I plan to add additional output formats such as GPX or OV2.

JM

File or Link!

Is there a file or link to the POI Database program?

new poi types

If you'd like to start a new POI type from scratch, just send me a note via the contact form and I'll setup an edit page.

(The process for creating a new poi type isn't fully automated yet.)

JM

I'll Wait :D

I guess I'll wait until its automated. I'm having a lot of problems figuring out how to convert
N 41° 19.144 W 072° 01.501 into data to put in a csv file. Everyone has been so great on here but I don't want to keep harping on it so I can just manually enter them into the 2720.

Thanks again.

Try this

Try this site.

http://www.cosports.com/tools/gps_coords.htm

It will allow you to enter the coordinates you have and then it will convert them to other formats so you can use them in your POI file.
.

mm00

Is there a lighthouse at that location? - south east connecticut right?

You could use google earth, for fun - paste your coord's
then let google earth take you there using "fly to"
You can then go to tools, options, 3dview then find "show lat/lon" and select degrees.
You will see the current coord's on the bottom of the map, if you use the push pin to fine tune a location you will get a box with the lat and lon, this is easily copied and pasted into note pad or excel.

Thanks JM
Since your database solution is to add one at a time, it will not be helpful at this stage. However, will look for it on next project.

Conversion Different

Hey Mama, (Sounds Funny)

When I do the conversion from:
N 44° 03.450 W 086° 30.842

Then enter it into:
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/bickel/DDDMMSS-decimal.html
Enter Degrees Minutes Seconds:
44 03 .450 Lat
086 30 .842 Long

I get this:
44.050125, 86.500234

But when I plug it into Google Earth it's no where close
44.050125,-86.500234

I want the site to figure it out for me. I don't want to be stuck with mathmatecial equations.

Any Ideas.

The LH is Hidden!

lsmonop,
Yes there is a LH there. It was a bad example. The name of the LH is:Latimer Reef Lighthouse and its located in CT but you need a boat to get there.

Since being sick and out of work for a few days it gives me time to play with all these programs.

Ok, Mickey try this site

Ok, Mickey try this site instead. It might be more simple.

http://www.wherearewe.co.nz/dms2dmm.html

Remember that there is a difference between Degrees, Minutes and Degrees, Minutes, Seconds. Those are 2 different formats.

Also West Longitudes are negative. The converter won't show it as negative, so you need to add that based on knowing that the orginal was West.

.

Let me Try this!

Mama, grin

Let me try this out and I'll get back to you!

Thanks for your help. I just love this place as everyone is so patient and willing to help you.

Why deal with conversions if you don't have to?

Most GPS's can be configred to display in a number of formats.

On the 2720 go to this menu:

MENU > SETTINGS > GENERAL > COORDINATES > POSITION FORMAT

Then select hddd.ddddd to display and enter coordinates in decimal degree format.

In Mapsource go to this menu:

EDIT > PREFERENCES > POSITION (TAB)

Then select hddd.ddddd to display and enter coordinates in decimal degree format.
