Nuvi, Icon, and POI issues

I posted a problem with the Nuvi 260 recognizing downloaded icons. I received an answer from yngben related to removing spaces from the file names that partially resolved the problem.

I assume this is not normal for other Garmin models and it onlt partially resolved my issues.

It also appears that my Poi files are not properly working either. My Target stores file, which contains my home store, does not come up with a store search by spelling. Closest one listed is 46 miles away.

It doesn't matter which way the POI file is named - space or not.

I am posting this problem as a new thread since it may be a larger issue for 260 owners

Icons and Store location

You are right it shouldn't have to have no spaces. I update my nüvi 200 on my Mac and have plenty of spaces in the POI and icon files names and everything shows up fine on the GPS.

As to your Target store, have you actually opened up the file like you were going to edit it and see if your local store is even in there? Perhaps who ever put together the list doesn't know about your local store.

You can always add it yourself.

store file

Yes, I opened the POI file and it contains my store

.

You can have spaces in the filenames as long as the filenames for the icons and the files are identical.

After checking to be sure that the location your are expecting to see is actually in the data file, the question I have is, are you searching for the store in the Custom POI section or in the built-in POI section.

The Custom POIs won't come up in a search of the built-in POIs. You have to search each separately.

custom POI's

Thanks. I didn't realize the locations would not come up (or cross over to) the standard POI list. My local location does come up when searching the custom list.

The icon issue is still there. No spaces or underscores will work in the file name.

Nuvi 200W

Just got my Nuvi Sunday and love it so far. It is very easy to use right out of the box...hoever, if you plan to use the advanced capabilities of this unit you better know how to search and read! The owner's manual is worthless. I kept wondering what the SD card could be used for. So far, I figured out for POI's...duh. Can anyone else enlighten me on other uses for the card?

Thanks, Dano

Nuvi 200W

Also, I am looking at the CSV files and updating them seems to be fairly easy...but...How do I find out where I am in the same terms? Say if I went to a Target Store that was not listed, how would I find out the -110.86205 32.1414 coordinates on my GPS? Where would that be? Thanks, Dano

You can View Jpeg Pictures from the card..Like a Digital picture frame. Handy of you want to take along picture of the kids.

SD Card ideas & help files

True, the printed Manual blows. It is more of a starter pamphlet than anything. If you find some free time, go through the help files on the Nüvi itself. I did this the other day and found it is fairly good at covering all the different menu items and options and explaining what they do.

As to the SD card slot, it can be used for a number of things. But as far as Garmin is concerned, one of its main purposes seems to be as a place to hold additional maps. You can buy maps on SD cards directly from them but I think their CD versions of maps allow you to install maps on SD cards to be used with the device.

I assume this is useful for when A) you have more maps than room on the GPS itself and B) when you want to use a particular map only rarely (e.g. for a one time vacation to Hong Kong) and don't want it permanently on your GPS unit to keep the internal memory free for other things.

One other useful thing I have found the SD card for is you can load in applications and install files for applications to carry with you. So say you often use several Garmin & third party tools, you can carry them around with you so if you are on a computer where these tools are not already installed, you will have them with you to use or install.

I also use mine to hold all the files I removed from the unit itself to free up room like the many voice files. Although I can probably just go ahead and delete those outright, but since the unit is new, I will hang on to them for a while just in case.

Thank you PT for your post.

Thank you PT for your post. I was considering copying the voice files and such and deleting them. I don't see any reason to have Cantonese on my machine if I only speak English.

Custom POI - Nuvi 260

How do you go about searching Custom POI's on the Nuvi 260? I'm actually able see custom locations (and icons) when I zoom in on the map, but am not able to locate these in a search.

On the map screen, tap your vehicle. This will pop-up a dialog with the current coordinates.

Extras area

You have to go into the "Extras" area then pick Custom POIs, then pick the POI you want, then search by name.
