Little "mac" activity on this forum

With the tremendous increase in the number of Apple (Mac's) that have been sold recently I would hope that the level of activity in this forum would also increase.
When I look at the "last activity/reply" many of them are very "stale", i.e., no replies in many weeks.
I have been a Mac user since 1983, that correct, 1983, and have only owned my Nuvi 650 for three weeks. I am not sure, but I think Garmin is the only GPS manufacturer that supports Macs.
Also, I have many bookmarks with "other" POI sites and this one has to be the best of the lot!
Happy New Year

Re: Differences?...
What's the difference between the 2.0.1 version and the 2.0.2.1 beta? I've been using the 2.0.1 code without problems with my 660 and 680 (with 10.5.5 on both G5 and Core 2 systems).
Hi k6rtm,
IIRC (if i recall correctly) Garmin's initial release of the Poi Loader v2.0.1 (Mac) was buggy, whereupon, Garmin promptly released v2.0.2.1 (beta). I downloaded, and have been using that version (v2.0.2.1 beta) and haven't looked back since.
BTW, how long have you been using v2.0.1? Maybe Garmin fixed the bugs that were in that initial release. Could that be the reason the (v2.0.1.beta) can’t be found anywhere, on their website?
Just my 2¢...

Instead, use this version (v2.0.2.1 beta) found at versiontracker.com.

Thanks Tailspin. I downloaded v2.0.1 last night but didn't fire it up. I'll download the above and use that instead.

Another piece of Mac software for the Garmin
Now (as a new GPS owner) I've also discovered there is a Garmin WebUpdater, for the Mac, at: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3699
This upgraded my operating system, even though I just got the Garmin this month.
So, now, with Garmin Road Trip for the Mac (previous post of mine) and with the Garmin Mac beta version of it's POI loader (mentioned previously, available from Version Tracker) - everything seems up to date (plus with the free map upgrade we all get when buying the product.
Proximity alerts work (when loaded manually). .Wav files work (when they have the same name as the proximity alert file you want to link them too) and any .bmp file can be used as an icon/label (when it has the same name as the file you want it linked to.
I'm impressed that I can also get Road Log information out of my simple nuvi 200 Christmas gift...uploading it using Garmin road Trip and then with Load My Tracks I'm suppose to be able to send this to Nike+ Raod trip or some other mapping applications. -- I haven't tried this last thing yet since I haven't hiked the trail I want to record but since the info goes from the garmin to it's Road Trip software and I got it as a .gpx file it should work, but hiking might have to wait till spring.
well...Apple Discussion Forum is great, you know, if you really want to talk Macs about Macs about Macs.

Hi Dave,
Ideally, if you were able to move the POI files from your
PC to your new Mac you’d be in good shape. Just remember,
the POI Loader “overwrites the existing file“ on your GPS,
with any POI files you are uploading to it. So if you tried
to upload a single POI file, it would overwrite (and delete)
all the other POI files that were in the .GPI file on your
760.
The only way to maintain the current POI files on your 760, is to use the contents from the same POI folder/directory, on your Mac, that was used on your PC.

One Important Thing To Remember Is That
If I get the Mac poi loader and updater for mac, will I lose anything previously [loaded] on my 760? Is there anything else i should know or do?
When you delete something (like a gpi file) using a Mac, it goes into a trash folder that the Mac creates on the Nuvi/card. Since the gps doesn't run the Mac OS, it treats the trash folder just like any other folder and continues to read the contents. You must empty the trash on the Mac before disconnecting the gps to really delete something.
The latest version of POI Loader for the Mac has eliminated (all?) differences that previously existed between the Mac and Windows versions.
Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
Multple POI files
I always use multiple POI files to avoid problems. I upload the Red Light Camera poi file and then, once it's uploaded, I rename it on the Garmin to Red Lights.gpi
Then I upload the Rest Area poi and rename it on the gps to Rest Area.gpi
I have numerous .gpi files and want to be able to update them individually.
When I want to update any of the files I simply delete that one from the GPS and upload ONLY the data I want and rename it to the proper name.
I never have to worry about an upload accidentally overwriting something I want to keep. Anything I upload is named poi.gpi by default.

Add me to the list of Mac users on this forum. I also found that when you have to contact Garmin, immediately ask for the Mac Support Group. Otherwise you'll end up talking to a PC guy for 10 minutes before he transfers you anways.
.vpm editor for the mac?
Wow, glad to find some mac people around here. (and, no, I have no interest in the pc/mac debate, thank you.)
I do have a question about .vpm editors. I found a couple for the pc but none for the mac.
Has any one had any luck finding mac software to alter the voices or phrases on the garmin nuvi?

Hi Matt,
I‘ve been looking for a .vpm editor for the Mac OS and haven’t found one yet either. At this point I’m wondering if one even exists...
Maybe we can implore “turboccc” to port his “TTSVoiceEditor“ to the Mac operating system. At this point, it may be our only hope...

Not much "Mac" discussions
Not much "Mac" discussions lately. I guess there aren't many problems with Macs that are worth discussing.
Things are better now for Mac users
Not much "Mac" discussions lately. I guess there aren't many problems with Macs that are worth discussing.
While GPS manufacturers still don't give full software support to their Mac users things are greatly improved. There was a time I had to borrow a Windows PC to do firmware updates. Garmin has improved immensely in the last few years.
Problems, if they do arise, are usually not due to problems with the Mac but on the failure of the manufacturer to develop proper software.

..(looking at broken Macs all day long is depressing)..
Well I guess there's something to be said about that, so are we to conclude that MAC's are..?
A recent "PC vs MAC" market share, ie:
http://techspotlight.today.com/2009/01/02/2008-pc-vs-mac-mar...
..showed PC at 90.73% and MAC at 8.03% Maybe that's why there's not much going on here as it pertains to MAC.
Just my thoughts. Your mileage may differ.

Not all they are cracked up to be
I have been using a Mac for the past several months now. Overall I'm not overly impressed. Once I got my files changed over to the Mac and got used to where everything is, useage is very similar to Windows.
Now admittedly it is more stable then Window's, but that can have a lot to do with the market share. Nobody is writing garbage to take out Mac like they do Windows.
Don't get me wrong I like my Mac and do wish there was more GPS software for the Mac but that will come now that more people are using it.
Myself I do my custom POI creation in Windows and transfer using the Mac. Some has to so with my limited space on the Windows partition. I'll have to wipe it sometime and increase it by several gigs.
Every printer will be different

Because Macs just work.
If there were problems, there'd be griping about them.
Funny how it works that way - people gripe when they're peeved, and silent when all is well.

Macs are a big minority ha!
Macs are gaining market share, will they ever have the share Windows has probably not.
I made the switch 2 years ago and wouldn't go back to a PC. They just work and you don't have to worry about crashes, virus's and malware. If I have a rare situation where I have to run a Windows application I can do that very easily.
Are they perfect heck no but no product is but when you consider what the alternative is there really isn't any comparison.
I've drunk the Apple cool aide and am relishing every drop.

When Windows first came out
When Windows first came out way back when, they "tried" to emulate the Mac operating system. It just worked. Microsoft is still trying to emulate the Mac operating system today, they can't do it. The Mac just works.
OK.....so where the heck am I?
Yes they do work
But as mentioned they do not have a big market share. Same with Linux. This is why there is no virus activity or malware activity on a Mac. Now if they were the big bad boy on the block you better believe Mac's would have more virus. Also keep in mind a Mac can still spread a virus through e-mail.
Don't get me wrong I have liked my Mac, company computer, over the past several months. I still do not feel they are all that the commercial's make them seem to be.
After all it is still a PC (Personnal Computer). There are some apps I still prefer to use in windows even though Mac has the same app. Just a comfort thing, that's what Im used too. I do try and do more and more in the Mac to get that comfort up.

"The launch of Leopard left some Apple customers wondering why it didn't 'just work.'"
In my experience doing computer consulting work I see when you compare one Mac user and one PC user the people with a Mac have just as many problems as the people with PC's do. You see more PC problems mentioned because there are 12 times as many PC's out there.
I also found that the Mac people are less likely to admit that they have had a problem.

Mac (Not Having Problems)
I disagree with kch50428 regarding Mac's having as many problems as PC users. I have owned all types of Apple computers, since 1983, and can count the major problems that I have had on one hand.
Several years ago I did have to replace a hard drive on an old MacBook. Blame me for that one. I was moving the MacBook around when it was shutting down; not a wise thing to do.
Over time I have had to call their customer support for small problems. They answer their phones within a few minutes, speak perfect English, and have always helped me solve my problems. That is why Consumers Report always has Apple Number One for customer support.Good luck with Dell or HP. Speaking of HP, my photo scanner has been a paper weight since September, when Snow Leopard arrived. They have yet to come up with any new drivers for Snow Leopard, even though they promised to do so on their website, starting in September. HP is terrible!

FYI
MacBook happens to be the first to fall when someone attempts to hack into it. Note: Apple has fixed the problem.
March 18, 2009
VANCOUVER, BC — Charlie Miller has done it again. For the second consecutive year, the security researcher hacked into a fully patched MacBook computer by exploiting a security vulnerability in Apple’s Safari browser.
“It took a couple of seconds. They clicked on the link and I took control of the machine,” Miller said moments after his accomplishment.

I found the following article while looking for some information about graphics card:
Apple Refuses to Fix Smokers' Computers
For those of you unfamiliar with AppleCare, it's basically an extended warranty service offered by Apple. You can get up to three years of service and support for your Mac as long as you're willing to pay. However, what Apple doesn't tell you is that if you're a smoker, your AppleCare might be worthless if your computer actually needs repairing.
