Little "mac" activity on this forum

With the tremendous increase in the number of Apple (Mac's) that have been sold recently I would hope that the level of activity in this forum would also increase.

When I look at the "last activity/reply" many of them are very "stale", i.e., no replies in many weeks.

I have been a Mac user since 1983, that correct, 1983, and have only owned my Nuvi 650 for three weeks. I am not sure, but I think Garmin is the only GPS manufacturer that supports Macs.

Also, I have many bookmarks with "other" POI sites and this one has to be the best of the lot!

Garmin does Mac good!

I am a new Garmin Nüvi user since Xmas, and one of the reasons I have not had to post in this group while using my Nüvi 200 on my eMac is that Garmin simply has done a great job making their software compatible with Macs. So everything I have downloaded and used by them works great!

So at least from the Garmin crowd, the lack of posting in this forum probably indicates good work by Garmin with their Mac support.

Mac's are still a niche

Macs are still a niche market. I like to think of them as a Lexus or BMW in the car world. They have a small market share, make a good profit, have great but expensive products. Be happy there are some Garmin Mac tools. Only a year ago there were none and Garmin just said sorry buy a PC.

TomTom was first with Mac support.

I'll join you in the Mac

I'll join you in the Mac forum after I win the lottery wink A couple of years ago when my old laptop died, I thought it would be a good opportunity to upgrade to a Mac, given my ever-growing loathing of Microsoft. But even realizing that I get what I pay for, I simply couldn't justify spending 3-4 times as much for a macbook. I didn't think the bank would understand my missing 3 mortgage payments in order to buy a better quality computer smile

It's nice to hear, though, that Garmin has good Mac support. I have a friend with a Macbook who will be happy to hear this.

Love my IMac and garmin. Great combination.

Mac User

Hello! I'm a Mac user in Chicago. My friend got a Maestro GPS for Christmas. I was so taken by it that I wanted to go out and buy one for myself. When I saw that the box said Windows only, I put it back on the shelf. I have a MacBook with Windows installed on it for those oh-so-few times when I really need Windows, but I wasn't about to support a company that didn't support me. I just happened to pick up the Nuvi 270 box and saw that it had native Mac support right out of the box. I didn't even hesitate to buy it.

So far that Mac support has been flawless. If that changes, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be posting here for help or with gripes wink

Michael

Well, it seems like my posting yesterday has resulted in some Mac/Garmin postings. Nice to know there are other Mac/Garmin users on POI/Factory.

I just got a MacBook laptop with an Intel processor. When I compared it to equivalently powered PC laptops the Apple was comparably priced. Plus, it is built well, designed well, and will run Vista for the rare occasions I need to run a program only available for Windows.

I can do both Mac and Windows, but once you go Mac you never go back!

My Mac is the one I use the most. I have a windows laptop and desktop computers.

Hooray for Macs!

My Dad brought home our first personal computer in 1984, when I was 4 years old: a Mac 512K (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_512K). Neither he nor I have ever had any Microsoft OS installed on a home computer...ever!

I have an Ubuntu server in the basement serving movies/music to my Mac Mini media head in the family room, but hey, OS X and Linux are cousins. But other than that we're all Mac, all the time!

Also, I was a Mac Genius at the Apple Store in Schaumburg, IL for the latter half of 2002, before I came to my senses and went to grad school on a government scholarship. While the job was terrible (looking at broken Macs all day long is depressing), I got flown out to the Mothership (Cupertino) for 2 weeks of training, saw Steve Jobs in the parking lot (although the first thing they tell you when you get on campus is "Don't stalk Steve!"), ate at Cafe Mac, all that good stuff. What a great time. smile

POI Loader for Mac

Is anybody successfully using ver 2.0.1 and getting the "Manual" install option? I do not get that option and it shows everything duplicated on the Nuvi. Sold these things for years and love my MacBook Pro, but I had to switch to my PC to get the POI's to install correctly.

Hi JeffSH,

I suspect there are a lot of Mac users on this site, it's just that they're probably posting to the "Welcome/open talk" forum, instead of specifically to the Mac forum...

I bought my first computer in 1993 (a Mac Centris), followed by a Performa, a G3, a G4, and my current G5.

Version 2.0.2.1 Beta

I have been using POI Loader Version 2.0.2.1 Beta and can load both "Manual" and Express on the Mac. It's been working fine for me.

I went back to the Beta version after loading the most recent upgrade because the Manual mode was not a option I had after upgrading.

It still surprises me that other tech related companies ignore the ever expanding base for Mac computers.
How they can ignore over 7% of installed Mac's is beyond me. I realize that 7% is a small number, however, why just write us off.
Mac users are very, very LOYAL. Can't remember any Windows Vista users telling their friends how cool and useful their platorm is.

Think about what you wrote.

Think about what you wrote. Sorry but 7% of any market is nothing compared to the 80+% on Windows. I have used Windows, MacOS, Linux, AIX and BSD as my main desktop OS over the past 10+ years. The pain and hassle of the lack of drivers or certain software has never justified the use of alternate OSes as a main desktop. Don't get me wrong these OSes have their place. I'd use BSD or Linux for web servers, Linux for file servers, MacOS for desktop publishing and AIX for clustering.

Each is a niche player, excellent for a few specific tasks. But as a main desktop OS Windows is by far a better choice. Note: Prior to Win2K I would have advocated a UNIX based OS (Linux or BSD based).

Think about what YOU wrote

Would you consider Mercedes and BMW's share of the US car market to be "nothing"? Together, they have less than a 7% share.

Think About What You Wrote (More)

Apple/Mac's may only have a 7% share of the market now, however at a number of colleges the share of Mac users is now in the 25 to 50% range. When they graduate they will want to continue with Macs in the business world.
I recently noticed that a number of business IT's have given the green light for their employees to buy iPhones.
I still have not run across many people who rave about the benefits of using Vista.

Didn't get my first Mac until 1984 (Mac Plus 1GB)!
Bought an Etrex 4-5 years ago and there wasn't much Mac software out there. Again, I was too poor (cheap) to buy the "unique" serial cable required for connectivity. Purchased a Nuvi 260 last week and found this site cool

So I'll be backkkk . . . asking questions and hopefully adding content.

As for POI Uploader 2.0.1:
On my IMac 2.4 with 10.4.11 there are no options but automatic. I've followed the links for "beta" version, but I don't think it's available now confused

After a few nervous experiments, I now drag and drop files/folders from the desktop. Toyed with Bobcat briefly and hope to do some more.

Thanks for providing the forum,

Also, when deleting files with the Mac, you will create trashcans on the Nuvi and card whose contents are still seen by the Nuvi. Best bet is to move to your desktop before deleting or I believe cutting the file instead of deleting works.

Yea BMW may have about 5%

Yea BMW may have about 5% but that is an unfair comparison. Windows OSes have 90%+ ... no car manufacture has more then say 20% if that!

It does make me cringe to advocate MS Windows, but today the market share is a fact... a very large fact.

I still have a Dual proc PowerPC mac collecting dust. It was great, but never thought it was worth all the extra cash.

Once you go Mac you never go back

I put Vista Business on my MacBook for work networking and some software that my school only supports for PC. I have work-related software for both OS's. Even with that choice I work in the Mac environment as much as I can.

One other point about market share is that a huge percentage of CPUs are bought by companies and are not chosen by the end user. As more people get exposed to Apple computers through their iPod and iPhone products there has been an accelerated shift toward Mac. It will always be a smaller share because they are the only company offering the OS and hardware. All statistics I've seen on OS switchers show many more switch from PC to Mac than the other way around.

Parallels

If you use Windows on an Apple machine, what do you use to run it....boot camp, parallels, vmware?

I use Parallels to run xp. It works really well. I am amazed how fast windows actually runs without all the extra garb installed (antivirus, scanners, system restore, etc). I just use it for windows only apps. However my main Operating System is OSX and I will probably never return to Windows.

Also OSX doesn't have to necessarily be on apple hardware (see links below).

I use Boot Camp

I use Boot Camp. I can see the advantages of the virtualization apps such as Parallels or Fusion, but I have heard they can also create Windows authorization hassles. The license I got for Vista is only good for one machine. I have heard that when using virtualization software Microsoft interprets that as another machine and deauthorizes the OS. I think it can be authorized with a phone call but I'd rather not have the hassle. I so rarely need Vista I just boot in it, do my business, and reboot in OS X.

BTW, I use a large USB drive formatted as MS-DOS drive to transfer files between the two systems.

Opening a can of worms ...

I have been reading this thread with interest and while Microsoft unfortunately has a monopoly on installed operating systems, Mac certainly offers a viable alternative to Microsoft's offering.

I on the other hand firmly believe and embrace the whole open source ethos.

I use Ubuntu Linux on my computer at home and have had no problems finding software as good as (if not better) than what comes from Redmond or Cupertino. Sure, you sometimes have to poke beneath the bonnet to get applications to run in Linux using Wine, but then that's half the fun!

What would make life easier for other Linux users would be for the likes of Garmin to come up with POI Loader and related mapping software ported for Linux.

But as I don't see that happening anytime soon, tinkering arouund in Linux and writing code in Python to get devices to work all just adds to the fun.

New 760 Owner

Hi Ridgliner,
How does your new 760 measure up to the 650 that you returned to Costco.
JeffSh

Absolutely

The 650 wasn't a Costco return, It was from The Source.
I really like the 760, but it doesn't seem as quick to pick up full bars from the satellites and the driving icon seems to be much choppier, whereas with the 650 the icon seemed smoother as the vehicle moves forward. Everyone says that there should be no difference between the external antenna and the built-in one, but I do notice a difference as it seems to take some time to find exactly where my car is. Speaker not the greatest as well. Really minor gripes
I really like that you can create routes though. I'm hoping to keep this one, but the best thing about buying from Costco is that if anything goes wrong with it, it can go back.

--
proud daddy of a bouncing baby nuvi 260w girl!

I've walked towards the light!

As I promised myself 18 months ago, once this laptop dies, I'm going Mac.

Well, 2 days into my 5 week on-the-road assignment, my Sony Vaio decided to pixelate itself and make my life a living hell. I am 7 days into owning a MacBook Pro and have just finished pulling as much data out of the PC that I could do make my life somewhat normal. 10 hour days with the client and 6 more waiting for the PC to boot properly makes one cranky.

Anyway, I downloaded Parallels so I could load XP onto the Mac so I can run my "bought and paid for" Excel, Works, and other Window programs into the Mac. I have yet to load MS Expressions for my website work... but that can wait.

I logged on here to see what Garmin compatible software would work with OS X, and am pleased to see others are pleased.

To those complaining about the Mac price, I paid 2 grand for this laptop. I run them for hours on end for work and I am tired of hard drive failures, driver corruptions, paying for numerous upgrades only to see money fly out of my pocket. Since '96, I have owned a Compaq, an HP, an IBM, and then 4 Sony's in a row. After buying a Dell for my wife's business I was horrified with Vista... no thanks, MS... I've seen the light.

Anyway, I can use the standard Window's based software to upload POI's, but I'd rather fill up my 150GB of Mac space.

While I have you Mac users here, I use a HP5650 printer. On the Sony, I could just select "Greyscale only" and print in Fast mode, saving on ink. Outside of changing the color shades to pure black, how in the world can I get the darn thing to print in greyscale instead of having to adjust with each document. I've looked through everything, but can't find where it could be.

Thanks!

AJ
