Little "mac" activity on this forum

With the tremendous increase in the number of Apple (Mac's) that have been sold recently I would hope that the level of activity in this forum would also increase.
When I look at the "last activity/reply" many of them are very "stale", i.e., no replies in many weeks.
I have been a Mac user since 1983, that correct, 1983, and have only owned my Nuvi 650 for three weeks. I am not sure, but I think Garmin is the only GPS manufacturer that supports Macs.
Also, I have many bookmarks with "other" POI sites and this one has to be the best of the lot!
Happy New Year

Huge lack of written software & support, after all these Years
As I promised myself 18 months ago, once this laptop dies, I'm going Mac.
Well, 2 days into my 5 week on-the-road assignment, my Sony Vaio decided to pixelate itself and make my life a living hell. I am 7 days into owning a MacBook Pro and have just finished pulling as much data out of the PC that I could do make my life somewhat normal. 10 hour days with the client and 6 more waiting for the PC to boot properly makes one cranky.
Anyway, I downloaded Parallels so I could load XP onto the Mac so I can run my "bought and paid for" Excel, Works, and other Window programs into the Mac. I have yet to load MS Expressions for my website work... but that can wait.

That always tickles the heck out of my funny bone!
the bold statement tells the real story, Lack of mac Software.
Just buy a PC if your going to run PC software. Be Realistic thats what makes the most sense, if you truly want to walk in the light.

A Mac will run windows XP better than a PC
Right now there's only one application on PC that the mac version is inadequate so it will allow me to be PC/Windows free: Quicken. I have years worth of data that I don't want to be without - so I'm keeping a PC going for that...until the completely rewritten from the ground up app that Intuit is working on for the Mac. If that will successfully import my data from Quicken-Windows, my PC days are done.
Once you go Mac, you'll never go back.

print prefs
Under any print menu (I use cmd+P to get to it) you can make your own preset and the next time it will go to the last used preset.
So in short:
cmd+p
quality & media (in bottom drop down menu)
click box "print in grayscale"
save preset - in upper drop down menu
these options may vary on different printers but my canon mp600 works great.
P.S. one thing OSX does nicely is being able to save anything in pdf format (cmd+p -> pdf -> save as pdf). This is one VERY useful thing that some people don't know about or use

Change print settings from the Print dialog
While I have you Mac users here, I use a HP5650 printer. On the Sony, I could just select "Greyscale only" and print in Fast mode, saving on ink. Outside of changing the color shades to pure black, how in the world can I get the darn thing to print in greyscale instead of having to adjust with each document. I've looked through everything, but can't find where it could be.
Many of the options are at the mercy of the Mac driver for that printer. When you select a print job look at the options you have for print settings. These are usually popup menus. Look for options such as Print Quality. If you have, for example, greyscale as option you can save that setting as a print option that will be available for subsequent print jobs.
The problem is that for some printers the options may be very limited. There sometimes are alternative drivers available which get be set up through the System Preferences>Print & Fax control panel.
I don't have a Sony printer so I am not sure what options you will have. If you are having problem there sometimes are workarounds that can be found by Googling the model of the printer and Mac. Also some manufacturer websites will have a support areas for Mac users.

Lack of mac activity...
I agree, tremendous lack of mac activity here.
No mention of blue screens, not many mentions of things not mounting, no endless discussions on driver updates.
My Nuvi and my Macs play nice together. They work.
I download poi files, put them into the hierarchy I've established, and turn them into files on the Nuvi. Works.
I load the occasional audiobook (most audio stuff I do on my iPod), and that works.
Oh, I did tinker with TTS, changing "Recalculating" to "Have it your way." For that I had to boot my Macbook into XP (and wait for it to do a slew of updates).

I think that is the reason the Mac will always be a niche market computer. There are so many small software companies and independent software and driver designers that just will not spend the time or the money to write for the Mac's limited 10% install base. They build a high quality but overly expensive product but they have been slowly making some changes that will make them more mainstream such as the CPU.
I have been into computer consulting, building and software since the first commodores came out and just have found nothing that is as widely compatiable and affordable to most everyone as the PC is.

Sorry, Bob, but I'm not putting another dime into a PC laptop. I'd rather flush the money down the toilet. The PC software I needed to access was necessary for me to continue to run my business.
As a poster wrote after you did, the Mac runs the Windows based programs better than the PC ever did. It is utterly joyful to turn the Mac on be able to go to work.

Blain7,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. Your Canon and my HP printer are definitely two different animals. Tried your directions and still hit the roadblock.
Yes, the saving as pdf function is GREAT! I used it on my first day in sending an email. VERY handy!

Another neat trick is to hold "control" and scroll up with the trackpad/mouse. This will zoom in the screen. It took me a while before I stumbled on this one. Useful for zooming in those online videos without a full screen option.

Printing Grayscale
I don't have the HP5650, but do have an HP Color LaserJet 4550 and an Epson Color 1440 InkJet. In both cases, grayscale printing can be selected. When you select the "Print" menu, a window with several pulldown tabs comes up. The first three are: Printer, Presets, and Paper Size. You want the fourth one (title depends on the application you are in). Click on that pulldown and select the item in the third group that says "color settings", or "print options" or something similar (the name depends on the specific printer driver you have). The window that pops up should have a grayscale option to select.
Hope this helps...

did you find the answer, if not:
This is how I do it:
Open the document you want to print.
Choose File > Print.
If the Print dialog contains only two pop-up menus and some buttons across the bottom, click the disclosure triangle beside the Printer pop-up menu. It is probably an arrow head pointing down.
About half-way down (right under Orientation) there should be another drop down list (It might say layout, or possibly the name of the program you are in, Safari, Mail, etc). Go to Print Settings. Here you should be able to change to Black only, and change the quality/speed.
I hope this works for you.

Love using Macs

Mac and Garmin
I too have been using the Mac since the early 1980's and just in the last few months bought my first Garmin. I am conditioned to the fact that almost every program I download will only work on a PC. I do have a few virtual machines available since I am running Leopard on the intel chip, but I prefer to patronize companies that remember the Mac community, I hope Garmin realizes that some, like me, bought their product because I could easily use it with my Mac.

No Trouble with Leopard 10.5.5
Me too, it's working just fine on my late 2007 2.8 GHz iMac. Every update including 10.5.5 has downloaded and installed with no drama.
Nuvi 360, OS X Lion 10.7
Not that many out there
Considering that it was big news maybe two years ago that Mac had broken 4% of the market share it isn't all that surprising there isn't more Mac related activity.
I spent a couple of years working in a university computer lab. When I started there were 35 PCs and 35 Macs in the main lab. When I left there were only 7 Macs left and they went mostly unused while people stood in line to use the PCs.
I supported both platforms and used them both. I fully understand why the Macs sat unused...........
I build my own computers. I don't buy retail. How does one build a Mac? I do tech support for a state agency and have tons of users. I understand about all the issues with the PC but, as far as I can tell, most are caused by people who shouldn't own a computer at all. They need a pencil and paper.

Mac sharing rising fast
I supported both platforms and used them both. I fully understand why the Macs sat unused...........
Most folks find the Mac interface more intuitive, but not everyone.
The market share has been steadily increasing, breaking 14% earlier this year:
http://www.macworld.co.uk/mac/news/index.cfm?newsid=20751
The iPod has brought millions to Apple Stores and over half of Mac sales in the stores are to new Mac users. At the college where I teach the majority of students are coming to school with MacBooks even though the University recommends PCs. In our labs I find many more students in the Mac lab.
As to building your own, there is no legal way to do it. There currently is someone selling a dongle that combined with the right components will supposedly work, but it is a violation of the OS agreement to use it.
Brent - DriveLuxe 51 LMT-S
Mac and GPS are somewhat seperate topics
Heavy Mac user here too... I think i've got 4 of 'em around the house... (my last windows pc was a Pentium3)
I think the mac sections is a little dead because, at least for me the Macs and the GPS only cross paths when i update the POI files.... about once a month max... unless I'm going to take a trip.
Non-customizable
As to building your own, there is no legal way to do it. There currently is someone selling a dongle that combined with the right components will supposedly work, but it is a violation of the OS agreement to use it.
Exactly my point. The thing is totally proprietary. If you blow a power supply you have to get one from Mac. If you want to upgrade the video you are out of luck. I like building my own PC and I can make it be whatever I want it to be. If I want to modify it or upgrade it or whatever I can purchase parts anywhere. I would absolutely HATE to be locked into what some Mac designer thought I should be forced to use.
I understand that Mac users are devoted to their machines. It's fine with me. If everybody else was like me I'd have to kill them all. I'm not trying to hijack the thread and turn it into a Mac vs PC rant. The Mac just isn't for ME. As for the "it just works!" crowd, my wife uses a Mac at work. Her entire workplace is Mac. Much of the time they don't work. I think their support person must be pretty bad.
Since Mac is gaining more users it's a good thing that companies such as Garmin are starting to support that user base.

Leopard 10.5.5 and WebUdater
I just plugged my Nuvi 650 into my desktop iMac (Intel) to check to see if WebUpdater had any recent updates for my 650. When I connected my 650 it never came up on my desktop, as it should. When I ran the UpDater it did not find any device to check for any update.
If there is anyone that could shed some light on my problem it would be appreciated.

Hi Jeff,
This may be a stupid question, but do you have the Garmin Lock “on”? The same thing happened to me. In my case, I didn’t realize I had my Garmin Lock “on” and once I entered the unlock code, it mounted on my desktop.

I have had similar problems on occasion. The problems usually were associated with either trying to mount the Garmin through a USB hub or I was using a bad USB cable. I find much higher reliability using a high quality cable plugged directly to the computer's USB port.
The other thing to do is to open System Profiler while the GPS is connected and check the USB listing. You can see if the computer sees the GPS at all this way.

Nuvi 650 Not Mounting On iMac
Thanks to Tailspin and Brentrn for their input. I "solved" the problem this morning when I discovered that I had plugged the a/c charger into my 650, instead of the correct USB cable that was connected to my computer.
Both cable ends look identical and they were buried on the floor where I had difficulty getting to them. This goes under, "Dumb & Dumber".
Thanks again for your help.

New Rumors
Rumors of updated iMacs and minis sometime in november... I'm not getting my hope up on the mini update again...
My company ordered my new macbook, and it should arrive today/tomorrow...

New Rumors (Continued)
If there an upcoming iMac and Mini's update it probably will be on Tuesday, November 11th
JeffSh
I knew I should have waited
I kept reading the iMac was not due for an upgrade this year so in August I bought my new iMac. Should have known.
But then, there will always be an upgrade, and if I kept waiting I would never have a new one. I was using an old G3. I still love it, in fact, it sits on my desk with my new one. Don't know why I can't just unplug it and put it away. But this new iMac, WOW, can't compare.
Well, come November 11th, I might really regret not waiting, but for now, I can't see how it could be much better.

Mac user Too
Hi, I'm a oldtimer too on the MAC, but new to the Garmin Nuvi 350.
Been using the Mac for 20+ yrs.
Mac User here also.
I have been using both PC's and Mac's since early 1980's. I mostly use Mac OS and hate windows, but have uses for it on rare occasions so I have Bootcamp and VMware Fusion setup and ready to go. (Parallels is crap with no support).
I have built many many PCs over the years, but now I have a Mac Pro Tower with Dual Dual core Xeon CPUs and this hardware is so far superior to any HOME built PC it's not even funny. This Mac Pro is best computer I have ever owned and I got it for FREE!!! I had Apple Care on my old G5, and when Apple failed to fix a problem I was having with it they gave me a new Mac Pro instead.
GO APPLE SUPPORT!!! WOO HOO!!!
I just downloaded all the updated Garmin Software and even used the Map converter to get my North America NT v8 Maps off VMware Fusion and installed in the new RoadTrip. (I know I need to update) Garmin has come a long way in the last year with the Mac app support! Now if only RoadTrip would delete all the waypoints before uploading duplicates... Oh and they need to add POI management to RoadTrip as well.
I do wish Garmin would also let us make our own Icons for Favorites like we can for POIs... The built ini icon collection is TERRIBLE!!! Only a few international Icon road signs and the rest are junk.

Hi Ymark,
The Poi Loader on the Garmin website (v2.0.1) is buggy and what surprises me is that Garmin “continues“ to make it available on their website. Do not use this Mac version (v2.0.1) of the Poi Loader.
Instead, use this version (v2.0.2.1 beta) found at versiontracker.com.
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32218
I’ve been using this version (v2.0.2.1 beta), since it came out over a year ago, on both my old Power Mac G5 and now my new Mac Pro (Intel) and it works flawlessly.

I don't see the need for a forum to discuss how great our Macs are.
But links to GPS software that runs on the Mac are great; after all, it's a GPS site.
I appreciated the link to Version Tracker, above, to get the latest beta version because it can do Manual mode. I was looking and looking for manual mode but I had the previous version and it wasn't there.
Manual mode is needed to enter speed alert info maybe useful in other ways (I'm just downloading it now)
The latest Mac software from Garmin to load up maps and send and receive to the Garmin is called RoadTrip -- it came out Sept.08 - and it replaces MapManager and Bobcat.
