How to set distance for announcing custom POI location?

A new owner, I am overdosing on custom POIs, but it occurs to me that some will be announcing themselves to me as I hurtle down a freeway at not-quite-legal speeds. How do I choose the distance at which various categories will announce themselves? I'd like rest areas (especially left-exit ones) to announce themselves a mile or so early, but not to pick up every red-light camera a mile or less off the freeway.

Distance

For complete control of Alert distance, you will have to use .gpx format, rather than .csv.

There is also the possibility of adjusting the trigger speed to give the same effect (since POI Loader defaults to setting a 36 second warning for speed alerts) - obviously if the speed is set too high, there is a danger of them not being triggered.

See: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764

There is some csv to gpx conversion software (http://cbrom.myby.co.uk/3.html?submenu=2) that might help in this particular scenario.

Not every File needs alert

Are you using the poi-loader ( I am assuming a garmin unit) in manual mode? There you will see each file before it loads. You can choose to have a proximity alert, or not. Then if you want a proximity alert, you can choose speed or distance. The distance is in feet, so for my rest area files I use 6200 feet, 5280 is a mile. The speed I have not worked with as much, but as I understand it will only announce if you are above the speed you give.

You (in my opinion) do not want an alert for every poi - as your unit will go crazy around shopping areas.

Great Info

Thanks for this info. It seems like it is very easy to get carried away with too many POIs and announcments. Thanks.

... and it turns out

... that my Nuvi 260 doesn't have MP3 capabilities, so I am stuck with the bong sound. Sigh...
