Stolen Nuvi 350---> RECOVERED

Hi All,

I posted in here a few months ago about a stolen Nuvi 350. It was stolen from my work place and I made a police report thinking that I'd never see it again. Yesterday the detective called me on my cell phone and told me that she had recovered my Nuvi and that I would have it back in less than a week!

Unfortunately, or fortunately? I went out and bought a 680 the next day. So now I have an extra GPS. Does this site have a classifieds section for the 350?

It's amazing that it was recovered, much thanks to the Plano TX. detective that really put forth an effort and tracked it down.

Kerry

Details:
No, I never used the "lock" feature on it, I never contacted Garmin about it being stolen, I'm quite sure they can't "track" a particular unit anyway and they'd need a whole building full of people just to facilitate tracking the sheer number of stolen GPS's in this country. Lastly, it was stolen in Plano TX and appeared miraculously in a pawn shop several states away and several months later. I guess there must be a national pawn database of some type that law enforcement uses? I don't have the offenders information and don't need it I guess. She is pursuing the capture of said individual and apparently he has quite a stolen goods business operating all through the south. - Kerry

I got my Nuvi back today and was surprised to see that the clown who stole it had been using it. All of my locations under favs were gone and replaced with a bunch of different stuff in and around Terrell TX. Here's the good part (get ready to laugh at this genius), he set a "home" location, which turned out to be a house in Terrell TX. I hit "home" and read the directions to the detective over the phone today. lol... Can you believe that? Some people are so ignorant... wink

Congratulations! Sounds like

Congratulations! Sounds like you have some real good people working down there. Definitely enable Garmin Lock so if anyone swipes it they won't be able to use it.

Nope - no selling here.

Although you can't sell here, go to the forums area of GPSCity.com where you can list it for sale. I sold a Nuvi 350 there in only 2 days (and to a guy in Canada). The 350's (when reasonably priced) go fast off that forum.

Recovery of GPS

In most states pawn brokers are regulated. They must list all items pawned and publish a report to the local PD. The bad guys, as in this case, waited a couple of months and then pawned the stolen item a couple of states over. Fortunately, the Texas investigator went outside her jurisdiction and was able to locate and return the stolen 350. Interesting to note, if the unit had been locked, the pawn broker would not have accepted the item for cash. Are all detectives so resourceful? No they are not.Does locking your GPS prevent theft? Only if everyone does it.

Congratulations!!

Congratulations!! Glad to hear that.

Stolen Nuvi

That is amazing. I wonder if the thief had gotten a locked GPS if they would just toss it. Merry Christmas!

Wow - I also live in North

Wow - I also live in North Texas and hope that if my GPS is ever stolen that your detective is assigned to my case. smile

That's Awesome

It's always great to hear the recovery of someones property. When you give Law Enforcement the model and serial numbers of the items you have it is entered into a national data bank. As stated above the pawn shops in most locations need to keep good records, and turn over information of items pawned. The items that have been pawned are listed and that list is entered to see if there are any hits on the items as stolen. The money the pawn shop paid out is lost by the pawn shop, but when it goes to court they recover their losses. So good records and copy of DL#s and photo IDs checked against the person pawning the items are done. The system works.

When it goes to court?

Why would it go to court? Is the pawn shop going to court against the city to collect the value of the money for the exchange of the GPS?

Nope

They go to court to recover the money from the thief. But sometimes the advertising they get from doing such a good deed, would be worth more than the cost of the item)

congrats on getting it back

I wonder what % actually get their GPS back...I'm glad you did, and also that b/c the dummy set a home location, that the cops can get him.

I am a dummy

I guess i am a dummy, cause when I returned the c530, I forgot to delete all my info...including home. Of course, I wasn't doing anything illegal so it really didn't matter except for I don't want everyone in Garmin and Walmart to know where I live.

Your no dummy, your no theif

Your no dummy, your no theif either. Therefore you don't have to think like one to avoid getting caught. This guy deserved to get caught. I do understand what you mean about not wanting everyone in Walmart to know where you live though. I'd proably do the same thing without thinking about it, but again, you and I didn't steal ours from its rightful owner.

I have a favorite cousin who was a cop in Irving, TX (another Dallas/Ft. Worth area city) and he was terrific. Although he will admit to being a pretty good cop, he didn't feel he was all that unusual. So it sounds like they grow some pretty good ones down there.

Imagine the thief's surprise

Imagine the thief's surprise when the po po show up at his door. How long do you think it will take for him to figure out how they found him???

It's like calling the police

It's like calling the police and saying "I did it." Man, talk about implicating yourself. Guy doesn't sound like the smartest person in the world. Fitting justice nonetheless.

My unit was stolen last

My unit was stolen last night. Came online looking for help/solace and glad to know yours got recovered. Had mine stole from Plano area aswell...

Ok Guys .............

Fill us in on the details of how it was stolen. Did you leave it out in the open with your car unlocked, or was it a break and enter, and they took it out of the glove compartment? Maybe the car was locked, but
you left it attached to the windshield or the dash?
