Deleting or modifiing Favorites

On my Nüvi, I try to delete all my favorites in one shot instead of deleting them one by one.

First I delete the "current.gpx" file in the nüvi, under the gpx folder. When I power up the gps, the favorites were back, and the "current.gpx" file also.

After, I try to replace the Favorites: in the gpx folder on the nüvi, I replace the "current.gpx" file by another one shorter with only two location. Again when I power up the gps, the old "current.gpx" was back with no change in the favorites,

Is there a way to delete or replace the "current.gpx" in the unit (Nüvi 250W) other then doing them one by one ?? question

CURRENT.GPX is not what it seems

Current.gpx is primarily an output file. It is a backup of your current favourites, but it's not the actual 'database' itself. You can add Favourites through a .gpx file, but you can't delete them. You can't modify them either - you just get a new version of the old one.

To delete Favourites, you'll have to use whatever is built into the unit firmware. There's normally a Delete-all function lurking somewhere, along with the one-at-a-time approach.

re: CURRENT.GPX is not what it seems

Thanks,

No delete-all function on 250W, so I'll have to continue deleting them one by one or supress all data at power on and reload favorites, POI, and parameters.

thanks for the info and the links. rolleyes

On the 350, if I go to

On the 350, if I go to "Where To", at the bottom right corner, there is a delete all (which includes your custom pois aswell)

re: On the 350, if I go to

Thanks Asianfire,

But no such thing on the 250W. Still have to do it with supressing all and reload what I want.

That function is not avaliable on the C530 or Nuvi 650. sad

I can see that it may not be

I can see that it may not be on the c530, but IMO it is stupid for it not to be on the nuvi 650, it is a freaking higher model then the 350. That is one of my biggest beefs. All Nuvis should have the same as the model below it, plus more.

The way I delete all Favorites

The way I delete all Favorites, when necessary, is a soft reset. hold the bottom right corner while turning the nüvi on until you get a message about deleting data.

re: The way I delete all Favorites

It's the way I was tinking of.
But I thinks you also lose all your personal parameters that way, like language, hour zone and format, etc...
Anyway, it the way to go for my 250W, much faster...

That is correct

That is correct. It will take only a couple of minutes to update the personal info.

Soft Reset on Garmin 200W

I too have been feeling the lack of documentation on this device. I too accidently ended up with some GPX files loading in the favorites. I did find the soft reset on the 200W in the help files on the device.

You hold the bottom right corner of the screen while turning on the device as it starts. It will then display a message asking if you want to do a reset.

If you indicate yes then it asks for the language and time zone and then resets to factory settings deleting all of the favorites. (It did not delete the custom POI files loaded)

I have also noticed that you can save your favorites (the ones that you really want) by copying the GPX file from the unit. Another post on this forum indicates that you can upload favorites by placing the GPX file on a SD card and starting the unit. I think that is how I accidently put all of those items in my favorites.

I have found a program at http://www.poiedit.com/ that creates POI files and also saves them as GPX, POI and other file types but have yet to experiement with it a great deal.

Deleting Favorites

On the 200W, if you go into Tools and select My Data, you have the option to Delete Favorites. You can selete all or just the ones you want to delete. Your Home is considered a Favorite so if you delete it, you will have to re-enter the info.

I want to know when they are

I want to know when they are going to make it possible to add or remove POI and Favorites the same way you can add or remove music from an iPod.
It's seams so simple, yet none of the Garmin PC/MAC software can do anything but add content... ???

I've just had my 250 for a few days. One quick observation is that the menu layout often makes things hard to find. Try this: tools (wrench) - down - my data - delete favorites . Of course, the 25ow might be different or we may even have different firmware versions, but I bet it is hiding there.

I try to delete mine one by one but everytime I turn the unit back on they are all back again. I can't seem to get rid of the stupid favourites. Now this only seems to apply to ones I downloaded from geocaching.com

Look for a gpx file other than current.gpx and if found, copy it to your computer and then delete it from the unit. If you have a card, be sure to check both the unit and the card.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I used frovingslosh method.

I used frovingslosh method. Works good. I was having the same problem like everyone else was having. I was deleting the current file and it was magically coming back.

Well I did it with the StreetPilot C530

you need to backup your bad(overstock Favotites) or good .GPX

Edit the file in MapSource after opening it.
Save the file.

Reset your Garmin favorites to nul using the Open with finger on bottom right of screen.
Now use mapsource to transfert your good GPX file to the Garmin GPX folder.
It will create a temp.gpx.

Close open your garmin and wappo the temp.gpx is gone and added to the current.gpx.

What happens here is if you leave a XXX.gpx file in that folder it will be appended on the next boot....

voila

This is also true for the 855. I just found this after pain stakeingly deleting the individual (156)favorites.... It pays to just push the buttons to see what it does sometimes.

How To Backup, Delete, And Restore Favorites

The following steps were performed on my Garmin Nuvi 660 to backup desired favorites, clear ALL favorites and restore backed up favorites:

I - BACKUP FAVORITES

1) Open Garmin Mapsource.
2) Go to Tools \\ Receive From Device, you should now see your favorites under the Waypoint tab
3) On the Waypoint tab select undesired Favorites and delete them.
4) Go to File \\ Save As and backup the .gdb to a desired location.

II - CLEAR ALL FAVORITES

1) Hold your finger on the upper left corner of the screen on your unit press the power button to turn the unit on. Keep your finger in that corner!

2) After several seconds, it will ask you if you really want to start in "maintenance mode". Hit YES.
Select Clear Waypoints.

III - RESTORE BACKED UP FAVORITES

1) Open Garmin MapSource and open your backed up file.
2) Go to Tools \\ Send To Device and send your favorites...

ALL DONE!

Maintenance Mode works

Freakin' awesome, InfoWarrior...

I've been foolin' with trying to do this on my 650 for waaay too long to remember, and your method got it done in one swell-foop!

Many kudos, my friend.
