text to speech

I have a nuvi 260 which I purchased about 3 weeks ago. It has text to speech. I have not used it for about a week and today when I used it, it did not specify the street names, all it did was say turn R 500 feet, etc. I know it works since I have heard it say the street names but now it is not. I thought maybe the battery was not fully charged, but I used it in the car and it did not specify street names. Can anyone help me out? I do like this model. I purchased it because someone said they liked the text to speech which I am glad to have but I have lost it. I looked in the help area and I do not see anything that assists me. Thank you,
Kathleen

Is Text to Speech really worth it?

I have a nuvi 250w which doesn't have tts, but my brother is considering buying a different model that does have tts. I was hoping some people would chime in on their thoughts - is it worth the extra cost?

I've heard that too often the tts mispronounces street names so that it's annoying, and I can't imagine the benefit is worth the extra (how many hundred?) it costs.

Thoughts?

Street names

I have a c340 that annouces the streets by name and some times it may put a little twist how it says the name but in most cases does a good job.I like being able to hear the street names because I don't need to look at the screen as much.A new update just came out that according to some users that have tried it say it is a improvement on how it states the names of the streets.I have not had the chance yet to see if it does. That was the main feature that I was looking for when I purchased my unit.

Imagine it.

To me, it is a very key feature. As replied above, when streets are close together, I don't want to have to take my eyes off the driving to find the name of a street on the screen. Even early announcements like "Drive 3.5 miles to El Toro Rd" become more useful because you realize it is taking you via a route you'd prefer not to use. With the Nuvi 360 on sale at Costco for $249, it no longer costs many hundred more to get the feature. As for mispronunciations, I have friends who mispronounce words and I don't rule them out of my life. grin

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

tts ?

Pay the few dollars more for the tts. It's well worth the difference. I'v used with and without the tts. It doesn't cost that much more.

TTS isn't worth it to me...so far

I live in New England, and that means some 'Native American' names. My town has a road called 'Muscatanipus Road.' Laughter almost caused milk to come out of my nose (and I didn't even drink any) when I heard my sister's higher-end Nuvi botch that one. I stepped down to the entry-level 200W as my first GPS and, thus far, no buyer's remorse.

I'm with Chris and other "anti-TTSers" on this>>>

It is a very rare occurence when I have no clue where I am going and being told to "turn right on Elm Street" versus "turn right in .4 miles" is just not something I've needed as yet...I'd rather use the saved money on other hobbies smile

TTS

I wouldn't consider a GPSr without one. Sure, it botches the street names from time to time, but it is accurate most of the time.

But then, that's just me.

There's a local variation, too. American Jill pronounces "WA" as "Washington," but Australian Karen calls it "Western Australia."

Alas! My odometer doesn't have 1/10 of a mile, unless I actively push the button to switch to a trip meter.

OFF Topic

We've gotten way off topic here. The lady would like some help.

I agree with Asianfire and believe that the voice selected is not tts.

The Lady got an extremely good answer with which you concurred>>

all due respect another member asked a valid ancillary question about TTS, which I and others thought was on topic (especially on a GPS forum) and got equally valid competing answers.

Agreed, he did ask another question. But his question was off topic in this node and should have been placed elsewhere.

I merely meant that the person posing the original question shouldn't have to read through all of the other information to see if someone else answered, or provided another suggestion to, her.

na ah

You don't really need a trip odometer to figure .4 miles do you? If Jill say turn Right in .4 miles that gonna be pretty quick. JUST DO IT

TTS is worth it to me

You will have to excuse Jill if she struggles with Native American names, guess what, So do I. Names that you have trouble with she is going to as well.
If you can look at a street name ahead of time and know your GPS is going to stumble. Navigon just did a update to MN/6 and it now does pretty good.
