can not recommend TomTom after lastest 800 mile trip

I recently drove from Maryland to Florida. While the TomTom One is an excellent device, it is crippled by the TeleAtlas maps. Luckily I had printed out Mapquest directions, which are based on NavTeq maps.

Not only did the TeleAtlas try to send me in the wrong direction, it could not recognize roads that have been there for years. The Navteq directions had no such problems.

If you are contemplating buying a GPS, go with Garmin which use Navteq maps.

Thank you,
Robert

TomTom Is Faster

I don't know about the C320. I have a 350 and it doesn't take any time at all to recalculate a route. If I veer off the route, the Garmin begins recalculating about as soon as my wheels straighten out.

Tom Tom vs Garmin

I have a TomTom 920T which I purchased after Christmas. I got it because I wanted to use the traffic program since I drive in DC and Baltimore all of the time. This is a fabulous GPS. My TomTom has re-routed me quite a few times because of traffic backups caused by accidents. I don't even have to push a button, it is automatic. My wife has a Garmin 330 and we put them in the same car on a trip. Her Garmin was slower to switch routes and both of them had one issue with the map during the trip. Also, thanks to the Poi factory, I downloaded the redlight cameras and speed cameras which have saved me a ticket on a couple of occasions. I travel about 750 miles per week on the east coast and it is a great tool. Mapshare is probably the greatest feature. My 920T is easy to use and I wouldn't trade it in for the world.

TomTom vs Garmin

So there you have it . Some people like Gamin and some like Tom Tom. Some have had trouble with one, others have had trouble with the other. I guess the bottom line is whatever you like is what you should use. Either way great information and good discussion. That's what makes this site so good, wish I have known about this before I bought my first GPS.

Update before the trip?

Everytime I travel I make sure to plug that sucker into the compter and get the latest updates. It's no use if that GPS just sits and never gets updated.
