Change in some POI format???

Maybe what I am asking has already been thought about... if so, chock this up to me having overlooked it on the site.

I see many files that have the following type of lines in them:

long, lat, name, name

I would like to suggest that has we build these files, that we have "city, st" buried in the 4th column somehow so that when we are scanning down the file in our GPSs we can see where the POI is at (relatively speaking). I realize city st is not always relative , like in some of the campgrounds or rest areas for example. But many POIs are close to, if not at a city st.

For example the POI might look like:
long, lat, name or place,"address city st phone no"
(st being 2 digit state abbreviation)

Sometimes in my travels, I scan the GPS to find out what is close by. I know it gives the milage, but I don't recognize the long, lat of places like I do city st. smile

Just a wonderment from a wondering person.

Long/Lat

Long/Lat does not show up on your GPSr when you look at Custom POIs UNLESS someone has added that info again in Columns 3 or 4. At least not in my C330.

Confused..

Aaaah, I see said the blind man to his deaf wife.

In most of the files on POI Factory, looks like the file structure is laid out like this:

long, lat, field1, field2

sometimes field1 and field2 are in quotes and sometimes not. I have confirmed through tests that the Nuvi 350 will only read the first 4 columns (fields) only and drop any other columns on that line after the 4th column.

Thus each record (line) in the file would have it's own long, lat.

That's why I stated it like I did.

What you are talking about is the view in the Custom POI section and I totally agree.

In the good ole days (when ones and zeros were king)... a file had records... not lines and had fields, not columns. This "new-age" jargon may be different... but us guys that did it first... we know. lol

To make matters more interesting...

There are GPSr that do not read the 4th column either. I'm not sure of the mfgr or models but I've converted many a POI file from 3 to 4 column.
