Chatty Kathy Thread for the week of October 29th 2007

Ok here it is the first chatty kathy thread... here you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

How many watts? I had 500 back in the early 90s but sold all the CB stuff I had and when I bought a new one for the job, didn't want to spend the money on an amp. But I use to be able to get like 60+ miles on it.

Best Garmin

I bought a 2620 first... didn't care for it much at all. I would give it maybe a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10.

Then I bought the Garmin Nuvi 350. Right now, it's fairly reasonable in price and may come down a bit more... does all the stuff (speaks the road names for turns, plays mp3, lets you add poi's, reads ebooks back to you). Some later models dial the phone for you etc.

For the money, I'd recommend the 350. As you can read on the forum here, it makes a man feel right at home by talking to you in a condescending tone when you miss a turn. smile

You can always spend more money but for the money, I'd say the 350 is worth it.

I wish that I could get the

I wish that I could get the nuvi with the street pilot's speakers and screen, then I would be very happy!!!!!

Nothing like seeing a roadrunner trying to outrun a car as your driving along a road. I've actually seen them run beside a car for almost a mile and they do about 20-30 mph which is very fast.

Miss POI

When I was younger, I had a good CB friend named "Turtle" that I chatted with for almost 2 years. Never did meet her in person but often thought about it. Seems that she and I would be driving to work at the same time and driving home at the same time. It got to be that she would radio me if I didn't radio her. Many times we'd talk all the way home.
Her first name was Shelly though.

On my CB, I talked to 16 states and 4 different countries. But I was talking on 250 watts... not the 5.5 watts that FCC said was legal. When I keyed my mic.... I talked and other heard me! Ha.

Now, I am wondering about putting a CB in my 5er and truck. There are places where cell phones don't work...

Which makes me wonder... what would a couple of good CB's cost and a couple of good boosters (say about 100 watts) cost?

Garmins Customer Service is tops

I have been in contact with Garmin Techs a few times trying to figure out why my Unlock code didnt work with my Etrex, and the 2008 software, I found there is a Big difference Between City navigator 2008 NT and City navigator 2008. The NT version is compressed much smaller, and I am thinking also a little less info. But the Tech Quickly figured out what the problem was and Sent me a new DVD disk of the full city nav, it works great. But I will say it takes a lot longer to load into the Etex..2GB for the USA..and States like Ohio are divided into 8 or more parts. I think it is for some of the smaller memory units that only take about 128mg.
Now since this is a chatty Kathy thread..I will answer the above post..There is No one Best Garmin..I would say that you need to find where and how you will use your Garmin..and that will help you choose the one or 2 like I have that fits your needs best..

Portable CB

As in walkie/talkie? Did not realize they made them. How's the reception? Brand name? How much? I think it sounds like a good idea. Jake

Walkie/Talkie

From what I can gather, the hand held cb's run on about 4 watts and run about $80+. If memory serves me right, 4 watts should be good for about 1/2 to 3/4 mile but reception on the other end will be not so good for anything over that distance.

I once had an old RCA tube CB base that one could jack up to about 8 watts. Input 8 watts into a 250 watt booster and woo-hooo... you could talk where people would hear you. With my Johnson mobile with a booster on it, I talked to the base regularly at distances of around 30-35 miles.

And from what I understand about hand held jobbies, one cannot add a booster on them.

Ok there are a few things that you must understand about CBs. There are four things that make a good CB...

1) Reception/Transmission (the most important part! IMO)
2) Clarity of sound (on your end)
3) Clarity of voice (what they hear on their end)
4) Wattage

Reception - It doesn't matter what CB you have!!! It is the antenna!!! I personally like the "Wilson" brand, I have a Wilson 1000. It has a pretty long whip (which really matters in reception/transmission). Now, if you want a smaller antenna, get a wilson 500 or "Lil Wilson". They aren't as good, but they are pretty darn good for the size.

Sound - Walkie Talkies and cheaper CBs are going to have sorry speakers and it is going to be hard to hear. An external speaker may be a solution.

Voice - A walkie talkie and cheaper CBs aren't going to have very good Mics. Getting a 3rd party power mic will help out A LOT!!!

Wattage - All CBs are allow a max of 5 watts INPUT (not output), most now days have that. You can illegally operate an amp, but again, that is illegal. FYI - Amps are intended to HAM radios, but are easily converted for CB use.

Summary:
Brands - Cobra, Uniden, Galaxy, Midland are all good radios. Galaxy is on the top (IMO), but alot more expensive.

Don't get a walkie talkie if you plan to use it. if you want to use it only for emergencies, then go for it. Otherwise, get a regular CB with a good antenna. I use mine for speed trap alerts and accidents. It takes all of 8 minutes to install it in a rental. Even faster to take it out.

I don't have an amp. I haven't boosted my radio to put more power out then what it came with. I can get up to 20 miles (on good days). On average, I probably get about 10 miles. I paid...

CB - 150
ant - 80
powermic - 30

You can spend more then $150 even on a walkie talkie. If you want to know more, let me know via email.

Yeah, a cell phone and a

Yeah, a cell phone and a GPSr can't give you dependable real time traffic like a CB can, usually they will say what lane is blocked and the locals will know what is the best alternate route and then you can use the GPSr to navigate from that info.

Also, GPSr can't tell you where speed traps are.
