Map Update 2008: An error occurred while communicating with the Garmin server.

I had same issue initially updating my Nuvi 350 to with Map Update 2008. The v4.9 Firmware did not allow me to update. After reading this forum, I discovered that I needed to upgrade to v5.0 which worked great.
Map Update got to recognize the unit, but then immediately got an err message:
"An error occurred while communicating with the Garmin server. Please try again later or if problem persists, please contact customer support."
I could not locate the source of the issue online. The problem turned out to be that my 'Proxomitron' proxy server needed to be disabled (Bypass) in order to use the web update...
Just wanted to share in the info in case anyone had the same issue.

I get that error all the time from mapsource's menu for updating.
From home, with no proxy involved.
I downloaded the mapsource update and applied it myself on my PC without a problem. Have given up trying to use the mapsource menu item for updating.

Windows XP SP2
If you have Windows XP service pack 2, the windows/network firewall may be blocking it. I would go into the control panel and turn it off temporarily and see if that solves it.
