After many months of accumulating Favorites in my Garmin C340, I uploaded my one free copy of their map upgrade (2008). I was shocked to find that the upload actually erased all my favorites.
I drive for a living and relied heavily on them. Now they are apparently gone! Has anyone lost theirs this way?
If so, were you able to recover them?
Thanks, mikewins44P
Yeah, I have heard that you
Yeah, I have heard that you loose them. I think I lost mine, but I have always used "favorites" as a temp holding place. I dont think that there is anyway to recover them, unless someone else knows of a way.

Lost favorites many times
I have a c340 also (my first GPSr). I thougth the favorites function was great and started saving all types of things. However, it seems that everytime I updated the firmware software, they got erased. So I stopped relying on favorites (or recognized that they MAY NOT be there in the future). It would be great if there was a way of saving them permantly - is there a way to do this? Can favorites be saved onto a memory card or something?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Have never had any problem on my C330 with losing Favorites or Custom POIs during two map upgrades (V8 and 2006NT) and about 5-6 system version upgrades plus any firmware upgrades.
But, as a precaution, I save my Favorites to Mapsource.

As you've already learned,
As you've already learned, they are gone. You should save them to "Map Source" as MrKenFL indicates. Then make a custom POI file from there. This then allows you to keep a back-up on your PC.

Thanks to all of you who replied to this post!
After a 15 min wait on the Garmin support line, I found out what you have been saying...the favorites are a temporary file and they are lost. Garmin said that I could install the map software on my PC for $140 and then save favorites.
Will now rely on POI lists I find on this site.
Thanks again,

You should be able to obtain Mapsource software at no charge from Garmin. If you contact customer service agents and explain that you want the software to maintain your favorites, they have generally provided it free of charge. Sometimes you need to contact them again if an agent refuses.

Actually, as MM Said, you can just back up your gpx file before you change anything else in the future.

Yeah, except you can't get to the current.gpx file on the c340. However, even if you don't have MapSource, you should be able to used EasyGPS to save your Favorites.

When ever I updated the filmware or installed the new maps, it never deleted or changed anything on My Garmin #7200, Can,t figure why it would do it to the C340.You would think it would happen to all Garmin Units and that you would get a warning before upgrading!

Mapsource
Called Garmin Customer Support and asked about saving favorites. They showed me how to save the favorites on my Nuvi350 (copy the GPX folder from the Nuvi to the computer). But said that there was no way of saving them on my c340. After I asked about Mapsource, he said, "oh yeah". Told me it was $170! Then tried to look for a 'special' customer service disc that he thought was around $15. He couln't find it and said that the person he needed to ask about it was busy, so took my phone number and email address and said that he would email me tomorrow. If they come back with a $15 disc, should I take that or is there good possiblility of getting someone to send it to me free?

Deleted File
Since the GPS shows up as a drive when connected to a computer, has anyone tried recovering a deleted file using a software program that can recover deleted files?
Mapsource Arrived!!!
I got the Mapsource software from Garmin. Now a question. Can this be installed on more than one PC? Want to intall it on my desktop and my Notebook. Just want to know before I install it on one or the other. If it can't be installed on multiple computers, then I'm going to need to think about it as to which computer to install it on. Any help would be much appreciated!

Why couldn't
it be installed on multiple computers? I haven't tried it, but a CD doesn't have a brain. How could it know which computer your putting it in as long as you own them? If it won't work, someone enlighten me.

They sent me (FREE) the "City Navigator NT" disk. It says it includes MapSource for trip and waypoint management.
And I installed on one of my desktops and a laptop, so you shouldn't have a problem either.

MapSource can be installed to more than one computer that you own.
It's unlocking the maps to the GPS units that is limited.

It like a password to get the maps functioning. You must put in their password to "unlock" them. The password has a limited number of times it works. Thats to keep people from giving/selling the map disk that sells for $100+. I was able to install it on both my desktop and laptop, but that might have been a fluke, and I did both of them within 15 minutes of each other. Hope this explanation helps.

Mike - here's what I think happened to you. With the Map Update, the device (via your computer) automatically connects to Garmin to see that your device "Firmware" is updated. If it is not, it updates the firmware first - then downloads the new map software to the device. If you were more than 2 firmware updates out of sync with Garmin, it will flush your favorites (and all of your settings) when it makes the firmware updates - BUT - it should have warned you that it was going to do that (a warning that a lot of people overlook). Had you stopped (and backed your favorites) after seeing that warning, you could have reinstalled your favorites (and POIs), and been right back where you wanted to be after the map update. Next time Garmin announces a firmware update, make sure you know which update you have on your device, and you'll avoid the problem if its only one up from where your device is now.
Cheers....... Joel

Silly Question?
I have bought the 2008 update and installed it on my c340. I guess I did not save it on my computer, as I cannot find it. If I was to reinstall it and save it to My Documents, Can I see the maps and plot routes,as if I were using my gpsr?
Thanks,

No. You need Mapsource.
No. You need Mapsource. Garmin will send it to you (just tell them you want to manage your Waypoints), and will charge you for S&H. I'm not sure what value you will find (not being familiar with the SP units), but what you'd end up with is a nice personal copy of Mapquest.........(grin)

Mapsource Question
I installed mapsource and when I look for an address, I don't see the detail that I see on my GPSr (for example, I copied my favorites into mapsource, when I click on one, it shows me where it is, but I only see major hiways, no streets), should I see more detail??? I tried to unlock a map using the 25 digit code that came with my GPSr, I didn't get any error messages, so I guess it worked okay, but I didn't see any changes in detail either. I also found a setting in one of the drop down menus for level of detail and even if I change he setting to Highest detail, it still looks the same. Am I doing something wrong?

Looks like Garmin handles 2008 differently
I've been using Garmin GPS's for 10 years, Marine GPSMAP 230, StreetPilot III and worked quite a bit with old Rinos. I have old Topos & World Map, along with CityNavigator for the SPIII. All of these programs included MapSource & installed the maps on my PC's hard drive. Can plan lots of stuff & thru a pull down menu, select CityNav, Topo or World Map. Now, with CityNav NA NT 2008, all I can do is upgrade my nuvi 660. Can't load the new maps on the hard drive, like all the other programs. I guess it has something to do with a "free" upgrade, but I also upgraded my old SPIII CityNav in the past and got the upgraded maps on my hard drive. I'm disappointed, was hoping to be able to do some planning on the PC with the 2008 maps.
Also very disappointed on how long it took--close to 2 hours. I can't believe anyone is still using USB 1.1!
It may be my imagination, but it seems the map refreshes much slower with 2008, when zooming in/out. Has anyone else noticed a difference with 2008 maps?
Now some of my waypoints are a few hundred feet from where they should be on the map. I sure hope I don't need to move waypoints to match the new map. Has anyone else noticed waypoints being off?

Do you have the City Navigator map data installed on your computer? In MapSource click on View > Switch To Product > and see what maps are installed.
Remember MapSource is the program engine. The map data is a separate thing.
If CN is installed, you might need to zoom in to see the detail.

Typically, when doing the upgrade you have to updated the maps in MapSource separately from the unit. (It can be done in the same session but is a separate step.) It's possible that since your MapSource/City Navigator on your computer is associated with your previous units and not with your nuvi, that the MapInstall didn't recognize your MapSource, but I would think that you could manually run the MSI in order to update your MapSource.
I haven't noticed my waypoints being off with the new maps nor the map refreshing more slowly.
Garmin c330 Wacked By 2008 Upgrade
I've been a happy customer of Garmin and user of my c330 up to a few minutes ago. Now I'm stunned at what they've done to my unit and hope someone here can help.
I purchased and installed Map Update 2008 thinking that it would proceed like my previous (NT?) update. The note on my unit to upgrade, Garmin's website and package do not mention the problem that I'm now experiencing.
In short, my c330, billed as able to handle maps for all of North America can no longer handle that amount of data in the 2008 update and I was instructed by the program to pick between the lower 48 states or Canada and the border states.
This is insane. If I need to drive from Texas to Vancouver I'll have to whip out a computer and update the c330 during the trip.
Is there a solution? If I purchase a blank SD card will that allow me to pull down all the states and provinces?
Thanks in advance.
.
The c330 doesn't have enough space to hold all the maps. You can install the lower 48 to the unit and then load the rest to an SD card as supplemental maps.
If you search for a post by benson_mountain, he describes the steps in detail.

I just did that and there are only two choices:

Trip & Waypoint Manager v2
So now I'm guessing there's no map installed???

That's correct. You have a program to manage your Favorites. You don't have the CN maps installed. So the program is as it should be in your situation.
How do I install CN maps on Mapsource then?
Is there I way I can install the CN maps on mapsource? I have a c340 and nuvi350 both with v2008 on them.

You Folks are Awesome
Thanks to Benson_Mountain for posting the instructions and Motorcycle Mama for pointing me to him.
My c330 now has the 48 states on the unit and Canada on a 512MB card.
My Favorites on both side of the border were retained and I only had to turn the unit off and on to get the card recognized.
Thanks again.

I re-read Garmin's text in the jewel case:
Compatible units:... nuvi 660...
Will also update MapSource CN on: xxx
Where, I believe xxx are devices which do not have enough flash memory to load all maps. Then, you need MapSource to define which chunks of maps by the Map Tool.
I think in my 660 case to get new 2008 maps on my MapSource hard drive, I need to spend the $75.

Maybe, but if I were in your situation, I would try running it manually first before spending any money.
2008 update
I have the zumo 550 and loaded the mapsource part into the computer. Do you know if you can load the entire country map into the unit. I tried and it said there is not enough space on the unit.
If you can help please email me at fmaro3310@si.rr.com.

.
Are you asking if you can load the entire UPDATE onto the Zumo? Yes, it will absolutely fit. I've done it. The update overwrites the existing detailed map.
The v8 map is 965,728KB. The v2008 map is 1,017,168KB. You have to have enough space on your harddrive for it to load on your computer as well.
If the install program is saying that you don't have enough space on the unit (which I think is odd because I have about 100MB free on my Zumo), I'd ask if you have loaded a bunch of extra stuff (songs?) onto your Zumo.
Be sure that you aren't trying to load the maps from MapSource itself. You have to use the update program.
