How to use nuvi 350/650/etc w/ closed antenna

Check out this thread on gpspassion: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=100730

i'm tunafish on the other board and posted the photo using gene350's instructions.

Here's what i did:
-Found an ID tag holder.
-Go a pair of pliers and pulled the metal clip from the back
-Used two pliers to break off the edge of the metal clip, then break the remaining part in half to get and get approximately 1 cm long section. use hammer to smooth it out. the metal portion of the ID tag holder is about 1mm thick. so u'll essentially use a 1mm x 1 cm piece of metal.
-Tapped that section to the lower right corner of the nuvi.

Good information. Thanks.

Not sure if I would

Not sure if I would personally want to do it, for one, I don't see any advantage to doing it (still can't be placed in the cradle with it down). The disadvantage is that it would void all warranties and there are times where I want to "Set Loc", so I would have to reassemble it anyways.

What do you see as the advantage of doing this?

u don't void the warranty at all. all u're doing is putting a piece of metal between the magnet on the antenna and the rest of the gps. it blocks the magnetic waves allowing u to use ur nuvi w/ the antenna closed. benefits? if u're using it to walk around....then u don't have to keep holding it up w/ antenna sticking out. if u're riding a bike or something, then u could easily put it in ur bag w/ less parts to break w/ antenna folded.

I went the whole hog with my Nüvi 310 and removed the magnet from inside the 'flap'. The advantage is, that it becomes much more usable as a handheld device.

I have to admit to forgetting all about wanting to use 'simulation mode' from time-to-time. Now I have acquired a large bar magnet that I have to attach to the rear smile

(Actually I tend to use the C510 for simulation mode, because it's more flexible.)
