Hello all. I just got a Garmin c330. I was wondering where you guys have had the most luck in placement.
I was thinking about the windshield below the rearview mirror, but then I'd have to stretch to reach it. (I have a Dodge Durango) I was thinking on the dash in the upper left on the windshield as well.
I want to put it in the best spot so I don't have to reposition it.
Thanks in advance.
GPS placement
I have my Garmin on the dashboard under the rearview mirror. I have a GMC truck and I did have to reach to the GPS when I had it mounted with the suction cup to the windshield, but now I have a beanbag and positioned the GPS closer to the dashboard edge and don't have to reach for it anymore. There are all sort of placement option out there and you can also buy a variety of mounts e.g. www.proclipusa.com. that lets you place your GPS anywhere in the vehicle. These mounts are vehicle specific.

GPS Mount
I drive a Lincoln Town Car. I have the mount on the windshield under the rearview mirror. It’s mostly to avoid any direct sunlight which does washout the screen. It may not be the premiere place. But it works out well most of the time. Repositioning of the mount is a ritual as I do not leave the mount on the windshield if I’m away for a few hours.

nuvi placement
I have my Garmin Nuvi mounted on the bean bag I purchased from Garmin. It rests right over the radio in the middle of my dash. This prevents the long charging card from getting entangled with my feet since the AC outlet is right there. I find it accessable and easily viewed. I hope the law enforcement people do not think it is obscuring my vision. I feel it is not, because it sets about 18 inches from the windsheil and I must move my head to look at the screan. I hope to hear some discussion from youall.
positioning of Garmin
refer my comments under teh VA police discussion forum. I have the GPS positioned on the dash below the sightline out the front windshield. It is right next to the steering wheel so I can both glance at it and also use a finger to easily reach it. I'm a little paranoid about haveing no vision obstructions. (It actually took me a couple of weeks of trial and error to find the right place.) I suspect each vehicvle is different.

I have a deep dash as well, so mine is mounted in the lower left corner next to the A pillar. It works great there for me.
I don't mount.
I have never mounted mine. I don't like the extra rings on my windshield to tempt theives.

I never use the windshield mount. I got the friction mount and set it on the dash. No tell-tale rings for thieves to see and its easier to move between vehicles.
I plan to live forever. So far, so good.
Mounting GPS Units
In Calif. it is against the law to mount anything on the windshield, I have mine mounted on the dash close to my right hand (I can work with my index finger while my hands are both on the wheel). The units are very sensitive to the satellites so you don't need to worry too much about placement for that reason.
Dashboard
I bought a sticky mat, attached the mounting disk to it, and put it on the dashboard.
When I get out of the car I use a tip I got from this forum - put a tissue box or map over it so it's not obvious that there is a GPS in the car.
Makes a good use for old maps!
With the sticky mat, you don't have to worry about sticking the disk to the dashboard and having to ruin your dash. by having peel it off at some point.

I open the compartment under the cd/radio and place it there with a bean bag. When leaving the car, I put it on the passengers side floor with a paper over it left by the mechanic when the car was serviced.
Same here....almost

I am severely left handed, so I have mine in the same place, except for it is at eye level.

It may just be me, but I don't have any rings often. When I do, one swipe of a napkin takes care of it.

I have a Nuvi 660 that I put on a Garmin beanbag mount in the left corner of the dash. I hook a magnetic mount external antenna to it. It works great in my Chrysler Aspen.

There is a company - Mountguys - that have a great selection of mounting options. www.mountguys.com.
I have bought several vent mounts from them.
