Car wash locations - nationwide

The Nuvi-supplied database is pretty sparse in the car wash area - especially when it comes to the do-it-yourself coin-op ones; therefore I figured I'd start this thread.

How many times have you crossed a mountain pass and wanted to blast that salt/sand off your car, or been on a road trip and wanted to dust off the road gunk?

I uploaded a starter file in the POI area under "other" with the Seattle-area Brown Bear car washes as a start.

If anyone knows of any locations out there in GPS land - be it fully automated or coin-op spray wash - please feel free to add it to the thread and I'll code it to the file when I get time. Or - if you are ambitious please include the lat/lon coords. There's no way I can suddenly geocode a sudden influx of 1000 locations!

I have created somewhat of a standardized csv format that would benefit everyone as follows

=====================
Longitude, Latitude, (A)(S)(T) Name of Business (if available - else use "Car Wash") - City, Street address and / or contact information

the (A) or (S) or (T) shows if it is one of these or a combination thereof:

(A) = Automated ("tunnel type") car wash
(S) = Self-serve (those high powered coin op sprayers)
(T) = Truck wash - able to handle a full sized semi with trailer
=====================

This way, when you select subcategory "Car Wash" or the like in your faves, you see a list like this:

(S) Brown Bear - Auburn
(A) Brown Bear - Auburn
(A) Brown Bear - Bellevue
(S) Brown Bear - Bellevue
(A)(S) Brown Bear - Redmond
(A) Brown Bear - Redmond
(A) Brown Bear - Renton
(A) Brown Bear - Renton
(A) Brown Bear - Renton
(A)(S) Brown Bear - Renton

Pretty easy to figure out which is the coin-op self-serve wand types or which is the antenna-eating, mirror busting, ski-rack bending automatic ones smile - or a combination of the two. Seriously tho - different cleaning applications call for different methodologies.

Here is a live example from the file:

-122.222331,
47.341968,
(S) Brown Bear - Auburn,
"Self-Serve Car Wash
3920 Auburn Way N
Auburn, WA 98002-1317
(888) 700-8077"

Adding a state is pretty moot as the POI selections sort by distance-to-target.

Thanks!

rustedhalo, this is a

rustedhalo,

this is a community effort, it takes time to get these files made, please be patient.

Nick

Lets keep these divided by state so that people can download them for the state that they need and then when the new system is up we can make a rollup file for it.

We will make it a POI Package.

Miss POI

Car Washes

I'll start compiling the ones I know of in the Twin Cities area in MN. How do I get the info to you?

New Jersey--Car Wash

I have put together some car wash locations in New Jersey. I can upload it if needed.

I have a "complete" database of car washes for WA

I would love to get this coded for a Nuvi POI. How can I best get you the list (it is in .XLS)? What Nuvi model(s) can accept this data once you get it coded?

.

Welcome to the site.

Be sure to click on the getting started and faqs sections linked at the top of each page.

Check out this page to see the proper format for the POI files.

The best thing to do is to download a file and take a look at what one looks like.
You can open the CSV files in either Notepad or Microsoft Excel.

Vancouver, Wa.

I've created a file of car wash locations in SW Washinton, specifically around Vancouver, Wa. area. The addresses and phone numbers are per Google Earth, and have not been cross referenced.

I've coded the names with (A),(S), and (T) per the original post. I've also included non-mobile auto detailing locations, which, in line with the originators code, I've given the prefix (D).

It's about 23 locations I beileve. How do I get them included in the Washington file? Do I just upload it, or should I email it to the original poster?

Hmmmmmmm

I wash the 2 cars by hand twice a week.

Of course, we live about 500 ft. from the ocean and the salt gets on the cars pretty good !

That's great

for folks who have somewhere to wash their cars, but for us apartment dwellers, it's nice to know where the car washes are.

Car Washes

Most of the gas stations around my area have installed car washes so any listing, even if broken down by city would be virtually impossible to maintain. Even if you limited it to the coin operated washes, the list would still be impossible to keep current.

On my travels across the country, I've never failed to find a car wash where and when needed and I've traveled in 48 of the 50 states.

The automated spinning brush

The automated spinning brush type car washes are fairly easy to find, I'll give you that. And if I drove a mostly-bubble-shaped-generic-looks-like-the-next-one-sedan, I probably wouldn't need a car wash poi file. cool

However, I don't. The Automated carwash typically won't let me go through their systems. Either because my jeep is so splatterd with mud grin they don't want me in their bays, or it's the attachments (cargo rack, shovel, axe, jack) I have on my jeep that they are afraid will snag their brushes. Even the times I was able to get into one, I still had to remove my CB antenna so it wouldn't get broken, and because of the boxy shape it didn't really clean it very well anyway. It's hardly worth the trouble.

However trying to find a coin op wash in strange places has been, in my experience, a difficult task. I have a local wash I use faithfully, so I don't need this file either, just trying to create content other might find useful.

Nixter had a great idea, but it seems that over the past 2 years it never got wings. For those of us who travel far from home, this would be very useful, especially knowing where to find a particular type of wash. But as was mentioned in this thread, trying to maintain such a file with current data on a national basis would be an enormous undertaking that may be used by relatively few.

Anything more?

I would love to have a list of car washes. Has there been any more movement on this project?

Car washes.

Like another poster said those brush spin wash places are pretty easy to find. Almost every gas station has one.
We travel with a truck with wide tow mirrors and I'm always looking for a coin car wash. I would use that file.

The interest level is very low on this type of file. Those that would look for it and use it are very limited.

I Guess

I guess no one likes clean cars (without all the extra work of doing it themselves). I travel a lot and would love to know where touchless carwashes were located. Those are not as easy to find, in my opinion, especially if you are in an unknown area.

You are volunteering to create the database and maintain it.

You should start with a spreadsheet with the following elements as a minimum:

Type, Address, City, State/Prov, Post Code.

Once you have those you can use Extra Poi Editor to do the geocoding of the addresses and create the CSV and GPX files.
