I made the Pizza By The Slice since when I travel if I am not on my motorcycle I am usually on a rented one and a pizza box just doesn't fit well. I was hoping there were more people who have a place where they stop to get a slice for lunch or something, but that does not seem to be the case.

The 2 places I listed are great pizza places, not just by the slice. I do not know what is considered "non-chain" though. They are all local chains. Slices only has 3 stores here in the Phoenix Metro area and Venezia's only has 3 here and 2 in New Mexico where they originated. If you and only 1 other person can down the 24" pie at Venezia's you get your picture on the Wall of Fame.

When I visit Sheboygan, WI I almost always visit the upscale Trattoria Stefano. But, right across the street the owner has another excellent restaurant, Il Ritrovo.

The restaurant uses authentic Tuscan recipes and techniques. A wood-fired oven cooks the pizza at 800 degrees fahrenheit.

I'm glad I gave it a try recently. Truly excellent.

Pricey, but excellent Pizza. Toppings are huge!

Two interesting places in the Portland area are Pizzicato and Papa's Pizza. Pizzicato now has 21 locations, including franchises, so that probably would be considered a chain. Papa's Pizza has 6 locations in Western Oregon.

Papa's Pizza has whole pizzas for dine-in, take out, and delivery, and a lunch buffet. It also features a huge indoor playground for the kids.
