Where do my USB drivers go to?

I have a GPS Map 76CX. I've uploaded the most recent drivers for it as of a month or two ago. As of last night when I went to download some tracks of my most recent outing, Windows claimed it was a new gadget, and had to look for - and not find the necessary USB drivers.

This has happened before, where I loaded the drivers, and they seemingly disappeared a few months later, after working fine till then. What's going on? Anyone know?

Where do my USB drivers go to

Something might have corrupted them did you try reloading or updating your USB Drivers if so what happens now

.

Did you plug it into a different USB port?

Nope,

Same USB port. In fact, after I posted that message, I tried to download and upload some files to it, and the same thing happened again last night. Windows again thought it was a new device, and I had to reload the drivers yet again.

Do a system restore... roll

Do a system restore... roll the computer back to a date when the device was recognized.

Same thing

I get the same message (driver not found) if I don't plug my Garmin into my computer for a couple of days. This started happening after I stripped out and d/l'd the Mapsource from the NT2008 disc. After I direct it to the right location, my PC finds the USB driver file in my directory labeled Garmin, downloads it and off we go. I'm going to try copying the USB driver file to the system driver directory and see if that solves the problem.

Interesting.

Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

Different port?

Have you found that using a different port makes a difference? I too am having a usb drivers problem.

The same thing happens to me and my Garmin #7200. It started after I had the unit for about six months. The difference being that sometimes it works and other times it says "WINDOWS HAS FOUND NEW HARDWARE AND IS SEARCHING FOR THE DRIVERS". In my case it always finds the drivers and installs them and everything is fine. My computer has eight USB ports and I have tried everyone of them and it still does the same thing, Not all the time but most of the time. The only time I had a real problem with it was when I upgraded to the 2008 Maps. The upgrade kept saying "unable to find Device". To get around it I used the POI loader first to find the device and then updated the 2008 Map update. It ran fine without a hitch! Go Figure

usb strange behavior

Hey Rich,
One thing that's odd is my i3 would not be recognized if I plugged it into a different usb port on my laptop. Half the time it would try to reload the drivers after finding a "new" device.. On my C580 it doesn't need drivers and treats it as a removable drive. This works fine but causes my Photoshop Elements to load and then crashes the app. The reason is that the Adobe photo downloader sees the images on the C580 and it's set to automatically import images from my SD cards. Not much I can do about it other than tell photo downloader to not get the images.... Oh well..

It may be the port I use...

...but I've gotten inconsistent results with that.

I also looked at my firewall after Garmin told me that might be the problem. Firewall hassles seem to cause about 99% of my computer problems for any program I use. I 'permitted' the firewall to recognize the program and that may have helped too.

Garmin also told me about some sort of potential registry issue, and how to fix it, but I haven't wanted to go monkeying around with that. Too many land mines for my taste.

For now it's working again, whether from using a different port and/or the firewall allowing it.

Is it the drivers or the computer

Each time I connect my GPSr to the computer I have to reload the usb drivers. Either the drivers are intermittent or my computer does not know where to find them.
After browsing around and finding the drivers the Windows wizard reinstalls and things are ok from there, until I disconnect and try again.
This is getting old.
Any suggestions other than threads on this forum?

Are you plugging the unit into the same USB port? I found on my computer (running Windows XP), that the first time I plugged it into a port, I had to reinstall the drivers. After that it was okay if I plugged into that port again.
