Making POI'S

Doesn't anybody know how to put addresses and phone numbers in a poi file instead of just long lat and exit 24 or exit 232 or the state that they are for

Maybe This Sample Will Help

While I too am new to all this, here is an actual sample of a POI I have uploaded to my Garmin 350 and the resulting display on the 350. Using the < br > in the Excel csv tells the Garmin to interpret the < br > as a carriage return.

EXCEL CSV FILE:
(column 1 - longitude) -80.988236
(column 2 - latitude) 34.972709
(column 3 - name) Denny's - Rock Hill
(column 4 - description)< br >2611 N. Cherry Rd< br >Rock Hill SC 29730< br >Ph: (803) 817-1816

GARMIN 350 DISPLAY:
Denny’s - Rock Hil

2611 N. Cherry Rd
Rock Hill SC 29730
Ph: (803) 817-1816

On the map itself, the location is displayed as "Denny's - Rock Hill."

Please note that the "< br >" tag does not contain any spaces. I had use spaces so they wouldn't be seen as HTML tages in this message

Couple notes

1. You can post <br> by entering:
& followed by lt; followed by br followed by & followed by gt;
(For more info, see my post toward the end of the first page of this tread: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/3066)

2. Instead of entering <br> manually with Excel, you can have
POI Verifier convert linebreaks automatically.

A poi file....... for example like the cracker barrel file here is example which do you prefer in a poi file

example one
-114.603,32.69556,"Cracker Barrel","I-8,Exit2"

example two

-114.603,32.69556,"Cracker Barrel","1780 Sunridge Dr S,Yuma,AZ,85365,PH-928-343-1988"
I my self Prefer Example two

Totally agree

I totally agree. If you look at any of my POI files, they all have a minimum of address & phone. Some have fax and store hours. Also mine are GPX files, so the phone number is dialable.

Alt-Enter

If you are creating your csv file in Excel, rather than using tags, I find it easier to create a csv file with breaks by using the Alt-Enter when editing the 4th column. So, in your example for the Cracker Barrel location delete the comma before 'Yuma' and the comma after the zip code and replace them with an Alt-Enter. The tags may give you added capability when creating gpx files, but if you are creating csv files and are just looking for readability, Alt-Enter will force a break into the field and your Excel spreadsheet will be more readable as well.

This works if you're not using a nuvi 350 or nuvi 360. These units require special linebreak code as they have a Custom POI Linebreak problem. See: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1277.

too bad

The poster says he has a SP 2720, does this 'non-documented feature' affect him as well? It's a shame Garmin doesn't fix it.

Exporting from Google Earth

Does anyone know how to export placemarks from Google Earth into a format that can be put into csv or gpx format?

GMap to GPX

Here's a tool for Google Map to GPX

Never used this so I make no guarantee that it'll work nor be held liable if something goes wrong.

But, none of it's documented

I've not actually seen any documentation that specifies how any of these units will respond to particular .csv or .gpx input. We all have our reasonable expectations of course, but that's not the same thing!

I would have expected that Garmin take a modular approach - pulling together the bits of code they need, to give each unit its particular feature set. The reality seems to be that each range has been developed by a different team, each working to their own brief.

How the Nüvi 3xx ended up with that radically different single page display, is anybody's guess, given that the Streetpilot C5xx/Zümo/Nüvi 2xx and Nüvi 6xx can each display 2 pages of information for each POI (though you rarely see Page 2 from csv input).

Why do the tricks that make a Zümo display Page 2, differ to those required by a Nüvi 6xx? ... ...and why are 'tricks' required in the first place?

Of course, we can work around these quirks - to produce professional results that rival Garmin's Travel Guides, but the unit-specific 'trickery' makes them difficult to share with others. I have a suspicion that this is why Garmin's Mapsource does not currently allow access to the Garmin .gpx extensions.

It will be interesting to see what standardisation, Garmin's Content Toolkit (aka GPI Creator) achieves (if any). Sadly, the Non-Disclosure Agreement prohibits discussing the test results

If you save the file as a KML, you can use POI Edit to convert to many different formats including CSV and GPX.

POI Edit worked perfectly

POI Edit did the job. It took me a moment to find it on the web, but it works as you describe and now I have a very easy way to create POIs.

I travel to wind power generation projects all over the country and have over 50 of them loaded in Google. Perhaps I'll update it (another 40 or so) and create a Wind Farm POI file and submit it for others to use.

Thanks Motorcycle Mama.

Did you find...

Correcting POI's

I found an error in a POI file that I downloaded. The work that someone did to make the file is very much appreciated but I want to make the correction. The coordinates that I found on the Garmin 2820 bears little resemblance to the POI coordinates. I tried to compare other known POI's coordinates with MapSource coordinates and ... well... there are marked differences. What gives?

About half of them are on my list... Good list.
