Question about missing city

I have a c340 and live in Queens, New York, the other day i went to use my GPS and I started to put in the address and when i when to put in the city Briarwood it would let me put up to the "I" and then it would pull up the city and it only listed Briarcliff Manor, NY.
If i had not known that this area is also known as Jamaica I would have never been able to get the address.
Now my question is who would I tell this to Garmin or Navteq?
Forgot to mention that I am using the new 2008 maps.

Missing City

You can go to the Navteq website to report any mapping errors etc.

However, is Briarwood the area's common name (like Soho or Chelsea) and not the actual name?? Is so, I wouldn't expect it to show up. If Briarwood is used as an actual mailing address (does it have a zip code?), it should be there.

Doing a quick online search, it seems that anything re: Briarwood has a Jamaica, NY USPS recognized address.

.

Often the city that you think the address or location is in, is not the one that the map database has it in. The "fix" is to search without the city and just Search All.

Missing Roads

I also need to do the same thing with a number of interchanges in Omaha, primarily on the interstate.

That brings to mind a question:

If mike_r and myself, and countless others, update the info at Navteq, do we need to wait another two years for the 2010 maps to come up for this to be updated, or does Navteq/Garmin issue updates for omissions/changes?

Navteq updates & releases maps/POI info several times a year...Garmin updates yearly. Once Garmin releases an update, you can use their map viewer on their website and preview that version and see if it has the changes that you are looking for - and make the choice to update, or not. Personally, I'm updating yearly - I save time, aggravation, and a little $$, so for me, the update is cheap by comparison.

Now this brings up another question, does this mean that even though i have 2008 maps all the info is from 2 years ago? That kinda sucks seeing as I just paid almost $80 for the update from Garmin.

Updates

The udpates are current up to the first part of 2007. Garmin strives to keep the map as up to date as possible, but due to the labor intensive process, the outrageous cost of mapping and the lack of possible quarterly sales, it is not feasible to update more often than every 18 months.

We upudate every year and a half (18 months) so that the cost can be kept as low as possible. It would cost a fortune to update quarterly, and most people would not update that often, so the demand does not justify the cost.

So, remember that your maps are as up to date as possible, and the 2008 version is up to date as of Feb (or so) of this year.

Thanks Garmintech and

Thanks Garmintech and kch50428 for the info. I will be going to Navteq in the next few days to update some omissions of roads, so hopefully they will be updated by Navteq before the next Garmin update comes out in 18 months.

I know the roads in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area, but if someone else was driving and using the routing for some of the Interstate interchanges, it would cause problems for them.

I am sure this happens in other cities, and can't imagine what kind of work has to be done/updated to keep these kind of maps up to date.

Do you need to go to the Navteq site to have these updates reach you, or how are they disseminated?

Navteq updates

You'd need to be a developer and/or provider of some kind to get things direct from Naveteq - they don't do retail.

Misunderstood

I understand that. You mentioned that Navteq does updates 1 or 2 times a year. Is that through Garmin? If so, Garmintech mentioned that they only do it every 18 months.

My question was how are the updates that Navteq does disseminated for the end user?

In the brief conversations I've had with Garmin at modestly high levels, the cost of these updates are huge. Between updating existing users and loading new units' I'm sure this is a major cost for Garmin. Just go to Navteq's site sometime to see the efforts they put in. As I was told, Navteq doesn't make all that many changes per update. And, a company that has to provide maps for many countries doesn't usually justify making these changes as possibly often as the mapping company does for these "minor" changes.

Your best input is to become a Map Reporter for Navteq on their website. www.navteq.com. You can report any deficiencies you find. Really don't know how long it takes to get there but it does help.

As to Garmin, these updates are costly. If there aren't enough changes, why pay big bucks? Navteq is pretty much committed to providing other companies their maps, not the consumer.

Naveteq is a wholesaler, Garmin is the retailer.

Don't feel bad Mike, TeleAtlas (TomTom) doesn't list Briarwood either!

I noticed on the new update somethings were added that were missing.

I would like a link to report errors/additions.

This is part of a response I received when submitting a map error to Garmin Cartography.

"Please keep in mind that in high growth areas, updates for new subdivisions and new construction may take time. We purchase one update a year from Navteq and if the timing isn't right, the changes may not be in their database yet when they send us our update. I know it can be frustrating but Garmin and our data vendors do everything possible to put out the most accurate, up to date maps possible. In addition to submitting the errors to us you may also want to consider contacting NavTeq directly by filling out their map feedback form."

Here's a link so you can report errors to "Garmin Cartography"
Error Report Form

also make a report to Navteq Map Reporter

If I remember my geography, the name of the incorporated city you wanted is New York. Briarwood is nothing more than a neighborhood. Are there any other US cities comprised of five counties?

For me, it seems to be most efficient to search "all cities" unless I'm looking for something ubiquitous like Main St.
