I made an out of town trip last weekend and heard the sound file for the upcoming rest stop!! I had installed the POI file weeks back on recommendation of a user here.
Whoever made that file has a great sense of humor. A couple flute notes and the sound of water gushing. LOL
Rest Stops
I've used the Rest Stop POI for many years. We just recently returned from a 4 week camping trip to New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona and it's quite handy to know when a rest area is coming up. In California there are usually signs one mile from the rest stops to let you know they are coming up but I set my alert to two miles as sometimes one doesn't see the sign due to big trucks or other reasons. However, I just use the alert, "Rest Area Ahead" rather than the one mentioned above.

The grandkids always liked the toilet flushing
They always laughed whenever we approached a rest area on a trip.

The Flush
I love a sense of humor in POI sound effects, though now I'm old enough to say that the sound of running water could spawn a painful peemergency!
"141 could draw faster than he, but Irving was looking for 143..."
where?
Where is the files you use?

Ahahahaha
I hear you. Set the alert distance to the minimum
That's awesome
If it keeps the kids happy on a road trip then it is well worth it.
Agreed....
it's a fun program.

I googled and see that there was a 10 year department of transportation plan to update 21 out of 26 facilities by 2030.
Check out the $35 million rest stop they built.

I happened to stop at the New Baltimore rest area during it's grand opening ceremony last summer. What a difference over the old building! They had free cake and coffee for the attending public, which really PO'ed the food vendors.
At home...
You can amuse the kids at home as well. Just say, "Alexa, Flush the toilet". Of course they may well then drive you crazy.

I set mine to 10000 (ft) a little less than 2 miles, that gives me plenty of time to think about moving to the proper lane at highway speeds. Why would you want to set it at a minimum?

I use 16000 feet, a smidge over three miles for my Rest Area alert. It works for me.
Rest Area Alert
I use a British Daniel type voice for navigation. Years ago, I found a web site where I could type in a sentence and it would generate a wav file with a British male accent. My British accent alert is "Rest Area! Rest Area! Anybody gotta get OUT?" I set it for 10,000 feet which provides plenty warning time to ponder the question and take appropriate action. Occasional guests in the car are always taken aback by it.
NY Thruway
Recently was on the Thruway for the first time in a while and was impressed by some of the rest areas. Also thought that the gas prices were pretty good for travel plazas.
