Simple way to Avoid Highways?

I have a Drivesmart 65 and there are times I will take a trip where I would like to take highways for most of the trip. I will set the destination with "Avoid Highways" unchecked and start my trip. Once I near my destination rather than have the Garmin take me out my way just to get to a highway I dive into the menus to check the "Avoid Highways" so the last few miles are shorter without the Garmin seeking a highway. Rather than go into the menus to uncheck the "Avoid Highways" box. Is there a shortcut to do this? Like a voice command or setting up a custom icon to check/uncheck the "Avoid Highway" box?

Use Custom Avoidance

You can create a custom Avoidance, but I'm not sure that it will save you any time. You would create this ahead of time, when you're planning your route.

On the plus side, you won't have to stop and play with your GPS. On the down side is you will have to plan ahead.

I have done this to avoid construction areas, on my route or to avoid a section of town that you might want to avoid for any number of reasons.

I also did it once to avoid most sections of the I-90 Toll Road. I could have simply put in avoid toll roads, but there is a section near the end of I-90, that is so short, you're better off just paying the miniscule toll.

Here is a link to show how to create it and you can see it is a bit tedious, but it works.

Experiment by creating a custom avoidance for something close to home. Then you can go farther afield. Unfortunately, Garmin hasn't tried to make a simpler method.

Toll question

Hi, most of cities have electronic tolls now and new devices of Garmin cannot avoid it, how can you manually update it?

Got many electronic bills for tolls recently and option avoid toll enabled in Garmin still not handle this issue.

Hope you can show us how to do it. Thanks!

Check my reply to Redmed immediately above your post. This isn't necessarily an easy answer, but it might be worth the effort, if it's on a regular route where your GPS might want to send you.

Why don't you find a route and create a custom avoidance, just as an test exercise. It doesn't even have to be a toll road. Just pick a simple street in your neighbourhood as a test.

trip planner

if you have a route you will travel frequently, it may pay to use Garmin trip planner.
I used to travel back an forth between DC and JFK as well as Boston.
I maintained a few defined routes with Garmin trip planner so I can avoid traffic or toll as desired.
I do create a set of "via points" along the road with which my Garmin direct me the route I wish. In the event I have to divert due to unexpected delays, or rest, I can always start from any points in planned route.

I Have noticed

that when you check "fastest" it will take you on roads/ interstate highways with the fastest speed limits, not the shortest distance. I always set it to shortest not fastest. Where I live fastest will take you way out of the way by sending you to the interstate highways. This is the same on my wife's Chevy Equinox and my Garmin.
