GE Not recognizing Nuvi 3590

Hi All. I was trying to update update the maps on my Nuvi 3590.

I updated GE to the latest version and plugged in my 3590.

GE just does not recognize the Nuvi for some reason. I've never had a problem in all of the ast years.

I tried plugging into different USB port, using a different USB cable, uninstalling GE and reinstalling it. Unplugging and replugging in the 3590 numerous times.

My laptop can see it in Device Manager.

Any ideas? This is driving me crazy.

Thanks !

What version of operating system?

As per the other thread, GE 7.18.0 and newer is no longer supported on Win 8 or older. I would try installing an older version of GE to see what happens. No reason to update GE for older GPS devices anyways.

GE Problem

I am using Win10 Pro.

I tried to install an older version and when I started GE, I got a message saying I needed to ,"Upgrade" to the newer version. I guess I'll just ignore the message.

I went back to Version 7.17.3 and it still didn't recognize the 3590.

delete 3590 in GE

Make sure the 3590 has a near-full battery charge.

Use the latest version of GE. Disconnect the USB cable from the 3590. Restart the computer and reboot the 3590.

In GE, there may be a 3590 listed. If so, delete it in GE. Reboot the computer again.

Then, connect the USB cable from the computer to the 3590. In a minute or two, you should see a small popup in the lower right corner of the computer screen that it recognizes the 3590. In the background, a Garmin driver is being installed. Look in GE and the "new" 3590 will be there.

Proceed with the map update.

Good Idea. Thanks

GE 3590 Problem

The 3590 is not charged up at all. So I will leave it plugged into the laptop overnight. I can't seem to shut it off while attached to the USB port, but I'll let it be.

I won't try anything else until it sits overnight attached to the USB on the laptop.

The 3590 disappeared from GE when I uninstalled and reinstalled it.

What should the MTP setting be?

Thanks !

Samsung charger

I usually use my 2A Samsung phone charger to charge my Garmins. Charges up a lot faster than using a computer USB port.

Laptop may not work

The problem with using a laptop for charging is even if the laptop stays awake the USB ports may enter a sleep mode. https://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-10/what-is-usb-selective-su... will show you how to change the setting so the USB port stays powered up at least while the laptop is wake.

Another consideration is the amount of charging current the port can deliver. In general, the specifications for a USB 1.0 and 2.0 standard downstream port, delivers up to 500 mA or 0.5A. Also, with a USB 3.0, it can provide up to 900mA or 0.9A, which translates into 4.5 watts. Chose the port that can deliver the highest current.

I have a Samsung CHarger that puts out a LOT of wattage for my cell phone.

Problem is that it has a "C" port, so I need to find a "C" to the Mini/Micro plug on the GPS.

Would that work ?

fast charging is good when you're in a hurry

Fast charging causes more heat in a battery and hence shorter life. When you're in a hurry fast charging is wonderful. When you're not in a hurry...

Agreed. I'm not in a huge hurry. 24 hours is plenty.

But I think my battery is starting to fail, so I may need to replace it.

Are we losing sight of…

the OP has stated he is using Win 10 and when connected Windows Device Manager “sees” the Garmin. It seems to me this is not likely to be a battery problem where efforts of late seem to be concentrated.

OK... after sitting all night plugged into the USB port on my laptop, I tried, once again, to update the maps.

This time, it seemed like GE recognized the 3590 and updated the maps.

BUT... now it looks like the entire unit has been thru a hard reset.

All of my Favorites and recent locations are gone! :.(

The "Current.gpx" folder is pretty much empty. There is an "Archive" file in the GPX Folder with about 20 gpx files in it. What could be in these old gps files?

I do have an old backup of the GPX folder from about a year and one half ago. I guess I can copy that onto the 3590 and give me back "some" of my locations.

Any ideas/suggestions ?

GE will make a backup

A hard reset will remove favorites but GE can make a backup. Do you know if you ever did one?

Take the latest archive file, rename it to current.gpx, and overwrite the existing file. Though I would recommend looking at the file using Extra POI Editor first. The archive files should contain a backup of your favorites.

I usually make a copy of the entire GPS file system.... except this time. I don't use GE.

So it's bad on me.... my fault. I know better.

Thanks. I'll try my luck !

Nope

That won't work, if you have a backup of current.gpx file then you need need to rename it to something like temp.gpx and place it in the GPX folder.

If you simply replace current.gpx your device will ignore it and overwrite it with a new current.gpx based on the data it already has in memory. An automotive device never reads current.gpx, it is simply a one way copy of what is in internal memory.

Garmin Express is set to automatically backup favorites from time to time, so it's worth checking.

Also, GE can be set to Always backup Favorites before doing updates. Note that if you have more than one device, you'll need to set each to Always.

In GE, tap the device, tap Tools & Content, tap Utilities, and finally, check the box for Always Backup.

But for you now, go to the Utilities, and see if there's a Backup that can be Restored.

Good luck.

This happens to me fairly often with my 3597. Even though GE says the map was updated, it was not. Simply update the map again.

Important - first charge the 3590 battery until it is full.

This happens to me every time I update maps

My 3590 and 3597 will sit for months without being in a vehicle. When I go to update them, neither of them will be recognized by GE. I then take them to the car or truck and plug them in. After about 15 minutes, viola’; I take them back to the computer and everything is hunky dory. GE just won’t recognize them unless they have a decent charge on them.

If you are using a laptop, make sure selective suspend is disabled.

Most computers have a mix of USB ports so know and use the USB 3.0 (or later) port for charging.

I started GE and looked.... it says it did a backup on 10-8-23. So that may be what I need.

Problem is that my wife has gone out of town for 3 days along with the 3590. Although the Saved POI's and Recents locations were gone, she wanted to input the places she had to go for work. So I can't try anything until she returns.

No worries.... I WILL keep everyone in the look on my success, or lack thereof.

I hate it when someone asks for help and never lets the group know how they made out with their problem.

I thought I had charged the battery fully, but I think the battery is worn out and needs to be replaced.

I WAS able to try updating the maps again, and I think it succeeded.

I have to wait for my wife to get back in town to do a rigerous check of the maps adn unit.

But the Map Info showed the latest maps on the unit. Just have to try to get the Saved and Recents locations back.

Thanks !

Resets

Good to know that you got your 3590 map updated.

Whenever I do a reset I don't even bother to back anything up. I couldn't care less if I lose my saved or recents. I only add locations back when I actually need to. Recents...never look at them and I don't care if I went there before.

Oops

The battery is rated at

The battery is rated at 1250mAh. The charging circuit on the battery or in the device will limit battery current to that level. Any charger will do, but a charger capable of less current will yield a longer charging time. A charger with a higher rating will yield the fastest charge time.

GE 3590

As promised, I have returned to et you all know the latest progress.

MY wife returned from work early enough for me to sit down with the unit and plug it into my laptop.

I confirmed that the Maps updated. Surprisingly, GE informed me that there was an "Update" for the unit. It was a small update s I let it proceed.

I checked to see if the saved locations had magically returned (they didn't) or if her recents were back (nope).

When I looked at GE, it showed that GE had backed up some files the when I tried to update the maps.

So.... I had GE load the saved file. All her old saved locations returned ! Yippee !

Sadly, none of here "recents" came back, but that's not the end of the world. At least her saved files were back.

You may ask why I was having such a panic over the saved locations on my wife's Unit... it's because she travels to many locations a month, many of them repeats, and it's just so much easier for her to use the saved location rather than punching it into the search function again.

Is there any way to get her recents back? Maybe in those gpx archives?

Thanks to all.

BTW... I ordered (and received) a new battery for her unit and hope to install it into her gps in the next week or so.

GE's underappreciated feature

It's too bad that auto-backup feature of Garmin Express' Utilities is not widely known. Not only can it help those who lose their unit's Favorites, but for folks trying to transfer Favorites to a second device, it doesn't require going to your computer's file transfer procedures and renaming a .gpx file to succeed.

Good news

Glad you retrieved your saved places, no way I know though to retrieve recent places, that list will be built again as your wife uses the device.
