Never knew Garmin made a heads up display

Interesting article at https://hackaday.com/2022/10/30/garmin-hud-got-discontinued-.... I applaud the efforts of the individual in keeping the device functional.

I remember it ... but ...

just like the failed Garmin nuviphone, the HUD device never gained much customer popularity/acceptance.

Good Innovation

The HUD is a good idea. It would be nice if more instrument panels were offered as HUD. HUD enables the user to see the data in a manner that does not cause them to look down and take their eyes off the road.

HUD is the future

Still loving HUD, easy to navigate and don't look down for more info

Mostly new cars today got HUD option but still under the limit.

Under my experience HUD factory within cars got some issue and need to have improve more and love to see if Garmin might do it again in the future to replace factory one or the one don't have it.

Within the HUD with my car I can see nice thing but not as expected such as:
- Washing out and cannot see it when your car climb to the hill and the sun is in front of you, no matter how I try to re-calibrate the light (contrast and brightness)

- You need to use factory GPS to show the lane and other information, then in case you want to enjoy the cruise without factory GPS, then it's showing only limited info

- Color limited which is very important, mostly white and very small option to have color and don't read it well, hope they can improve more

- Cannot zoom in or out as wanted

- cannot personalized in font no matter what

- don't integrated with phone, you need to look at info screen, then double check, while we like to have all in one place

etc...

Good day!

Love HUD

HUD is fantastic. Have it in my car and it is a great safety feature.

My daughter's Mazda CX-5

My daughter's Mazda CX-5 (higher trim) has HUD and it is amazing and it very bright. Despite many shortcomings, it is still a great feature to have in your vehicle. It shows speed of your vehicle, lane assist and blind spot warnings on HUD as well. When you use car's built-in navigation, it also shows up on windshield. It would be nice if it shows info from infotainment system as well.

Never had a Heads Up Display........but

I've never had a HUD, but I have a hard time figuring how much of a benefit it really is for keeping your eyes on the road.
My Dashboard is right in front of me and a quick downword glance can tell me my speed, which is the most critical thing. I would also notice any indicator lights that are showing a problem.
If you have your cell paired with your car, you're automatically going to look at the screen and then decide if you want to answer.
Text's are worse, since you have to touch the screen to get it to read out the text.
If you have a passenger, I see that the majority of drivers turn their heads 90 degrees to look at the passenger when they talk to them. That's a good 4-5 seconds of eyes totally off the road.
You still have to turn your head, to check for vehicles, beside you, unless you have electronics for that, and then does it work 100%
If you have kids in the back seat, you're generally going to check your rear view mirror, to see what they're up to.

Many, Many things that cause your eye to come off the road and HUD only deals with things like your speed, to help.

My new Jeep has HUD. I like

My new Jeep has HUD. I like it keeping my eyes closer to the road, but I have it set down as far as it will go on the windshield as to not block anything. Others like it front and center as it is transparent. I just don't like the distraction. To each his own I guess?

With the Garmin, was an iphone or ipad needed?

There is a new Garmin HUD unit on ebay (see https://www.ebay.com/itm/195456675068?hash=item2d82202cfc:g:...) and one of the photographs of the original packaging states "Made for iPhone or iPad". Perhaps that was the downfall? The device was announced in 2013 and needed Bluetooth, which in my experience was somewhat unreliable. With Samsung and iPhones, I found them to be susceptible to interference from other nearby devices that had Bluetooth enabled.
