Backup Failure RV890

I ran into an error and couldn't find anything in the topics that matched my issue. Sorry for the long post...

I currently use two RV890's and I normally back one up when I add favorites and then transfer the favorites to the other 890.

When I attempted to backup today, it starts the backup and then fails after about 25% and says "there was an error backing up your favorites."

Then I figured I could just copy the RV890>Internal Storage>Garmin>GPX folder over to the other unit, but upon trying to paste it to a windows folder it gave me an error as well after about 75%. "Error copying file or folder" "Unspecified error."

The 890 GPX file has 973 items and 68.1 MB, the folder I copied it to has 971 items and 68.1 MB. After comparing both files, the Position.GPX and the Archive Folder are not copied over so I am guessing that one of those files is corrupted. I tried copying these over individually and get the same error on both.

Does anyone know if I can delete the position.gpx and archive folder without losing data or causing the unit to malfunction? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Favorites

Sounds like you may need to delete all the favorites on the unit with the corrupted file . See https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=NLbuIFdmXd6ZH7WFUOu1G7... . Locate to delete a favorite, then scroll down to delete multiple favorites. Then copy the good file on to the unit . Change the name from current.gpx to something else. Once copied to the device reboot the unit and go back and delete the new name of the current.gpx you placed on the unit.

Backup Failure

Thanks Charles, I will try that. Any idea why I have so many .gpx files on the older 890? Can they be deleted?

Favorites

On my Nuvi 2597 the only folder I have is the current.gpx. If you install other gpx files with a different name they will stay there but load to the current.gpx once you reboot. Make a copy of current files in the gpx folder before deleting the files. If you delete the current.gpx it will reinstall after reboot. That is why you have to manually delete the favorites.

No Luck

I have tried copying everything possible from the main unit to the second unit and it will not take. I added about 20 or so favorites for my trip starting tomorrow and backed them up to Garmin Express. I then try to copy them to #2 and it says complete but the new favs are not added. I tried copying current.gpx and then tried copying the entire gpx folder over but no luck on anything.

I will have to play with it some more when I get back but it seems there has to be some way to do it. I was considering factory resetting but I would then have to re-do all of my settings and shortcuts. I wonder if I copied the entire device over if that would work.

Favorites

Did you do a complete shut down and restart when you added the gpx favorites? When you add the gpx file don't name it current.gpx . Name it something else in the gpx folder. Reboot the unit and the files will load to the current.gpx. if just a favorites problem you don't need to recopy everything..

This method may be work better for you. If you have basecamp
( https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435 ) or mapsource do the following. Connect the unit with the file that is good to the computer. On base camp under device at top. Click on receive from device. Once you see all are loaded. Disconnect unit from computer and connect the unit you want the files to. Then go back up to device on top and select send to device. All should be loaded. On mapsource same method but select transfer up top then use the receive and send tabs
