Since last map update

Anytime I use GPS and I’m coming home from I40,
The GPS has me take a road that is not grey (indicating a gravel road) that frankly I did know was there, so I didn’t take it.
Last time coming home from Asheville, there was no traffic so I slowed down to see this road.
You gotta be kidding me! It’s a dirt road in the middle of a cornfield!

I’ll get name of street and gps coordinates on the main highway US276 next time I go there.

I do have ‘avoid gravel roads’ in settings, but I’m always suggested to turn off US 276 onto this road.
Street seems to be classified as paved in GPS, but it sure isn’t!! Looks like a dirt farm road going between two fields. Corn was 8’ high at the time, and there was barely room for one car with the fields planted.

I made the change in

I made the change in Mapcreator. First I unpaved the road and second I removed the connection to Return Rd.

I'm having similar issues ...

If I set a destination while at my home, the routing will send me down three miles of dirt road instead of the paved road I live at the end of. This started with the latest update.

Maybe the next update will fix it. Or maybe not.

Quirks

I've had these quirky navigation issues with almost every GPSr I've owned. They seem to vary somewhat with the current map update.

Over the years, I've learned to vet a route using Basecamp and Google Earth before using it in a GPS. Unfortunately, this doesn't help when creating a route on the fly.

There also seems to be a lack of routing consistency, even with the same GPSr. The route from home to work will sometimes vary depending on a variety of factors. Time of day, day of the week, phase of the moon? I have yet to figure out how the algorithms work in these units.

There is one thing you can rely on though. Unless a road is impassible for some reason and it may not be the best route or the fastest, but you will always get where you want to go.

Garmin’s routing

Has always been suspect as far as I’m concerned. Whoever does their algorithms was obviously a crack baby. I’ve contacted them several times, finally just gave up.

"You can't get there from here"

Just a reminder, Garmin does

Just a reminder, Garmin does "learn" your routes and preferences. Also It looks at traffic snd the time of day, (it uses general trends of road type vs time fo day) to plan routing. Other times thee's just no rhyme or reason.

Wow! You found that exact

Wow! droopyNJ, You found that exact road
Glad I did not go down that road!
Google maps shows: After it goes through cornfield..it dumps into a cattle pasture!!!
It also appears that the connection to Return Road is also in a Corral!

That is now 2 local roads I found that had to be fixed!

In this case I believe it's because the road through cornfield now has a street sign at US 276 Junction!

Thanks so much for your help!!

Not mine.. daft it is

Mine must be a real slow learner. From my home I am always taken out of my way to get to a main road.. in spite of me never taking them

Until update removing dirt

Until update removing dirt road arrives I’ll be looking for 2689LMT to determine I don’t want to travel there also.
I’ve never seen it happen before.

It seems to me, although I haven't gone to the effort of checking, that myTrends isn't offered on the newer devices. True or not?

Even without myTrends, don't some/most/all Garmin devices learn your speeds vs speed limits and adjust ETA and things like this to be more accurate as it learns the driver's driving style? Or maybe even choice of road type? I've thought this for a while and also think that performing a hard reset will lose these and start the "training" all over again.

Yep

MyTrends has been silently withdrawn, at least as far as I can tell, seen nothing official from Garmin.

Garmin still claim a Garmin will learn your driving style and adjust speeds etc on different road types. That certainly seems to be the case as having used a new device for some time the ETAs get more and more accurate

One thing that will just screw up what your unit has learned about you, is to delete your average speed. Now you get to treat ETA as a challenge for a while until your Average Speed gets back above 50 MPH.

I'm good in city, not on Interstate

sussamb wrote:

Here in Albuquerque my around ETAs from my Garmin 3597 are remarkably good. But something about how it learns my habits, and how seldom I'm out on the road, means the Interstate ETA estimates are way worse.

The ETAs I get from the onboard nav on my Tesla Y are generally pretty good. That has the advantage that it gets live traffic info, which is not available to my 3597 in Albuquerque.

The street sign for that

The street sign for that dirt road is:
Catamount Drive
