How to link a specific reply

On the Garmin forum, there's been a discovery of the current reasoning for there being multiple "large" jcv files.

In reading one of the replies in the thread, information was offered as to the what and why...and I've updated my FAQ on the Large JCV file.

I know there's a way to post a link to a specific reply in a POI-Factory thread but I can't remember what it is. I'd like to include a link in my FAQ. Can anyone guide me to the method? Thanks.

Any help at

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/3623.

But I have to ask, and maybe because I don't understand your question, why not just copy the URL from your browser and then do a paste into the content? (as I did above)

Multi-page threads

There are some threads that go on for multiple pages and in a case like that, it's nice to point to a specific reply rather than to say "Go to page three then scroll down until you see a reply by user xxxxx with a subject of yyyy.

I found one way but it offers a way for a person to post a reply and I'm looking for the non-reply mode. Sorry, this is confusing but I expect the few folks that use the technique will hopefully reply soon.

For example, I could link to your reply this way"

http://www.poi-factory.com/comment/reply/52457/543296

but what I really want is to be taken to your reply just to read it. I have quickly skimmed through a search including search terms "alandb" and "charlesd45" since they are high on my list of potential users of the technique but I didn't find an answer although I may have skimmed over it.

Try this

See if this is what you are after.

Select the subject line of the specific desired reply. Then right click, then select "Copy link to highlight". Paste that where needed.

This http://www.poi-factory.com/node/52457#:~:text=8%20years-,Any... will take you to my previous content in this thread.

This http://www.poi-factory.com/node/52369?page=1#:~:text=14%20ye... will take you directly to your reply in a thread from about a month ago.

It doesn't work for me. Your first link above takes me to the original post of a thread and your second link takes me to the top of page 2 of a thread. Do you see what I'm seeing?

Trying your instructions, if I right-click a Subject of a specific reply, I'm not seeing Copy Link to Highlight. In case it matters, I've tried using Brave and Chrome browsers. Using this thread, if I right click on your "Try This" subject, I don't see what you are suggesting as an option.

I'm looking for something that takes me, for example, to the 8th reply on page 3 of a thread.

Select subject first

You have to "select" (or highlight) the subject then right click, then the drop down menu that includes "Copy link to Highlight" appears. Then use the typical paste to insert the link into the body of the text. This for example.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/52369?page=1#:~:text=14%20ye...

or http://www.poi-factory.com/node/52369?page=1#:~:text=14%20ye...

from the same thread, page 2 but different replies by you.

OK, I see where that works for Chrome, possibly with an experimental flag set. I do remember even using it before and maybe now, it's part of Chrome and doesn't require setting an experimental flag. Thanks for the reminder tip. Doing a quick test, your method works for folks when clicking your links in Chrome and Edge. It does not work for Firefox and Brave. And by doesn't work, I mean a user of Brave or Firefox isn't given the option to create such a link, and when a user of Brave or Firefox tries to click a link created and posted by someone else, the link fails to go to the intended reply and is without any colored highlighting.

There is, though, a generic way that works with all browsers and maybe someone can link me to the description of the method. The method is a bit of a runaround as it requires doing something, then copying the browser link, possibly modifying it, and copying it to a reply.

Thanks for the reminder of it working for me in Chrome (with highlighting, even!) and also in Edge. But as far as I've found, it doesn't work in all browsers.

Aha!

Aha, I found it and as expected, it was from Charlesd45 (or alandb)!

Here's a charlesd45 link to a specific reply:

Charlesd45 or anyone else, how, when viewing a reply that you want to create a link to, do you come up with a link like this?

Many thanks! This has been fun....sorta rolleyes

I emailed the link back to you. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/link-to-text-fragm... .It will not work on Brave but Chrome and Edge works.

Deleted (I'm still thinking)

Linking to specific post.

CraigW, this is how I link to a specific post: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/44758

Ha, I knew it was an alandb or charlesd45 thing. wink If I looked harder at the FAQs, I would have found it. Then maybe not as I'd go to the Index, then have to go to the Forum section to find it.

That is precisely what I remember reading and how it requires some effort to manually format a URL to do what I desire. But its advantage is that it will work with all browsers as far as I know.

Thanks to all who contributed today. It does suggest to me that if creating a FAQ, or even in making just a reply in a thread, if I want everyone to be able to click a link to go to a specific past post, I'll use this method. Also, if I stick with Brave or Firefox, it'll be the only way to make a link that works.

I'll follow your lead and create a Favorite to simplify things for me:

cool
Alandb's FAQ:

Usage Tip: To make it easier to use this method of linking to another post, I create a bookmark for the following URL and lock it into my browsers Bookmark bar.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/?page=0#comment-

When I want to use it, I open a new tab, and select this favorite. It will give a "Page not found" error, but it makes it easy to copy and paste the thread ID and post ID values shown on the original page to the address bar in the new tab.
