Driveluxe 51 Navigation Error

On a recent drive across Pennsylvania, I experienced a navigation error with my Driveluxe 51 that I have never seen before. I left Pittsburgh and used the "Home" option to create a route to my home location just east of Scranton.

The unit routed me via I-80 which is the most direct but I decided to take the scenic route via parallel US 6 instead. As the 51 usually does, it kept trying to route me back to the interstate. The interesting thing was, it kept rerouting me back to the starting point of the route near Pittsburgh rather than the closest I-80 interchange.

Normally, the 51, as well as most other Garmin's I've used, will keep directing me back to the original route until it finally gives up and calculates a new one based on my current location.

Well this never happened. Out of curiosity, I let the 51 go to see how long it would keep trying to get me back on the original route. I drove all the way home and the unit kept trying to reroute me back to Pittsburgh and then home again via I-80.

I've used the 51 since that trip and it now appears to work normally.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Something similar…

I don’t have my 2689 to play with some screens but I remember something similar, although it was a relatively short trip compared to your journey. When selecting a “favorite” I was presented with a screen that gave two options. This is not likely exact screen wording, but one choice was “continue current route” or “start new route.” After selecting the “continue” option I encountered some strange routing, to the point I reselected the favorite and chose the “start new route” option.

This is not confined to the DriveLuxe 51. The same thing happened with my nuvi 3597. It probably happens with all Garmin GPSs.

After a route (trip) is set up, you must start at the starting point. If you miss that waypoint, that is why the GPS will forever try to go back there. The remedy is to stop navigation and do a "where to?" to the destination. This discards the route.

Also, if the route (trip) has any intermediate waypoints, they have to be hit also or the same thing will happen.

This is not documented anywhere, but I have done this more than once.

This is not how routes used to work. My nuvi 760 would always rejoin a route if you deviated from it for some reason and there was no difficulty.

Well

Your 760 didn't do that as it used the older route Planner which is different to trip planner on modern devices. The behaviour as described is how trip Planner is meant to work. If you want to skip the start point of a trip, or indeed a viapoint, you need to take some action to do so, either by starting a new trip, or using the 'change route' function accessible through spanner bottom right.

Only shaping points can be skipped without user intervention.

Thanks for pointing this out but I'm aware of this behavior.

In the case described above, I was at the starting point when I created the route. No pre loaded waypoints were involved other than my home destination.

Yep, had this happen on my 3597 also

After having it try to send me back where I had just come from a few times, I got smart, canceled the route, and put in my destination. It worked perfectly. Now, I break a long route down into segments. Usually, what I can drive in one day. No more issues.

This is not documented anywhere, but I have done this more than once.

We were on a trip out west a few years ago and I had this happen. It kept on trying to send me back to where I had just came from. After it tried this a few times, I canceled the route and put in a new destination. That took care of the problem. I now will just put in my destination for the day. Works perfectly.

When this happens and you don't want the fastest route, go to settings and select something else, like shorter distance, then when it tries to reroute you select detour and it will reroute from where you are.

missed starting point

Bdhsfz6, this is what could have happened. The car is parked. The route (trip) is saved in the GPS. You start the car, activate the route, and drive away before getting a good fix. After the car is 100 feet away, the GPS gets a good fix.

I Suppose..

Missing the start point is always a possibility but I created the route after I had been moving for a half hour or so. The 51 had acquired a fix and was tracking as it should.

It was not a pre programmed or imported route, simply one created by the "Home" option while on the fly.
